Awesome song & group, but in response to: "is it mocking of male touch sports, a rallying cry, a come-on, or really intimate footsies?" "The Football" was simply a popular dance in the earlyl 1970s, and there are many funky "football" songs. Nothing more, nothing less. ;-)
It's a shame that she died before I'd ever heard of them.
I think I'll check out some more of their music.
It's a shame funk went out before I was born.
Most of the rap songs that replaced funk music are awful; and are sung by singers so vain, that they demand to be reffered to as "artists", despite the fact that their "music" sounds like rabid dogs being tortured.
@SinnFein4ever That's only the stuff you hear on Radio 1. You have to delve deeper into the underground to find the good stuff. Give these songs a listen: Pete Rock and CL Smmooth - TROY A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation People Under the Stairs - Disco Trippin Ugly Duckling - Smack Madkap - Proof is in the puddin Showbiz and ag - Bounce ta this (live) Justice System - Dedication to Bambaataa The Goats - Dug Dig Del tha Funkee Homosapien - Dr Bombay Sage Francis - Dance Monkey
The metallic paint/powder that the first Tin Man had in The Wizard of Oz, originally played by Buddy Ebsen, caused him to nearly die from it. He could not breathe and did not get better for quite some time afterward either. He later played Jed Clampett of The Beverly Hillbillies and also was in another TV series about doctors I think.
So sad to hear of her passing. Got a chance to know her at the WCWMF in Willits in 1982. Her tent was by ours, and we had a turkey. Anyone who has been knows they are vegetarian, we were popular. Her and her daughter ate with us every night for 4 nights. and gave us free t shirts and an album. Godspeed.
I remember being on stage at the Beacon Theater during intermission on stage with my mother right before she had broke her foot on stage. I played a song with her on the drums and she played the bass. I loved it all, i was i think 9yrs old. But when Stella broke her foot on stage, everyone throught that she was doing a performance skit. But afterward, they realized that she had broke her foot. The crowd was clapping, I guess when adrenalin is running through you, you don't feel the pain.
IF the band was managed properly, they would have been very HUGE. I jus wish that i wasnt so young at the time to voice my opinion. Actually ISIS pioneered all of the female musicians of today to have recognition. I remember when they would go on the radio to do interviews, that they would get so much animosity from the male musicians because they couldnt believe that these 9 women played the songs theirselves. But, when people saw them in concert on TV that changed all of that.
saw your note...i was in the third incarnation of ISIS...bass player...i remember 3 months at Trude Heller.;s..Carol was wild..God bless her,,so many great woman musicians came thru ISIS.,..and we got fired alot because of the politics...great exp....Barbara Coibb NY
Thats true with the silver paint story. But did you know that my mother Stella Bass kept her silver paint in her hair for almost a week which caused a trend in the bronx with the hair styles? AAAAhhh.... Yes ISIS was way way way before their time with the music and this is why ALL OF US, YOUNG AND OLDER need to request for the three albums to be featured on VH1. They want to do a reunion with the group. ISIS lost the lead guitarist recently who was one of the founders of the group ISIS.
was a groupie (although I thought I was a girlfriend) to carol macdonald. went to their manhattan gigs, esp. at trude heller's in greenwich village. was in an all-girl band in high school, went to nyc summer break. lots of well known rockers went to see them. pretty awesome musicians.
tnx for bringing us younger generations up to date with Pop Culture of yesteryear, was born in 72 and always fantasize about being young during earlier decades, late 60s and all 70s seem to be seminal years for the development of the "modern" Pop culture of the 21st century.
;-) I am with you there. Add my couple of thousand miles of distance and you get an impression of what I feel, finding this on YouTube. I loath all th web2-crap, I doubt the value of services like that, but there they are... Isis, Jimi Hendrix, Genya, and oh-my-god so many others... Vinegar Joe. This is not fair. ;-)
Not sure. Ten Wheel Drive were great at the same time. And Carol MacDonald would probably not have developed her unique style. Genya needed to go solo for a while and with a little more luck, both bands would have gone down in (Jazz-)Rock-history (as Genya claims for TWD).
Here's an interesting sidenote. At the end of the silver-paint shoot, one of the members wanted to stay in her paint and the next day she got sick from it.

He was the detective, "Barnaby Jones", in the 70's.

So was that silver paint toxic, and how easy/hard was it to get off, and were there any effects/aftereffects? Beautiful apart from any toxicity!!!
