Great silence majority: I'm not against "Civil Union" I believe LGBT couples should have the same rights as married couples. But I don't believe the union of such couples should be redefined as "marriage". That is religious term. I am not religious, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to stand up for a belief I don't agree with. Any group that tries to elbow their way into something that was never their place to belong in the first place is out of line. Sorry...
.You disgust me for wanting to deny an innocent humans right. The bible only carries one verse that is against gays. Levitucus 20:13. "When man layeth with mankind like he would womankind, both are an ABOMINATION and both shall be put to death."
ABOMINATION for the time the bible was written meant against tradition. If you know, this country is not so fond of tradition anymore.
Good video, and you're right. It's all about religion. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland ME accounts for 81% of in-state fund-raising to fight Equal Marriage.
I agree 100% with every word you said in your video. Im a gay woman from the Netherlands (where we have gay marriage since 2001) and wondering how long this torture is gonna continue in the US. Its hard to watch this happening in a so-called democratic country and have religion decide what others cant or cannot do. I hope this whole issue goes to the SC, or that your federal government will deal with it, properly. Best of luck.
I'm from Iowa (YAY!) and utterly heart broken over Maine, which is supposed to have so few religious citizens per capita! But, I think that much of the reason is the word "marriage" to even non-religious heteros, due to the dewy-eyed Brides and Grooms who want to reserve it as something special just for them; they can't seem to stomach the thought of two men or two women "mocking" their ceremony. *sigh* Why do they think they NEED to tyrannically vote against a minority, though?
I just found out about prop 1 this morning, and the only thing I could do was facepalm and say "not again"
I'm from Pennsylvania, and I'm gay.
I followed the prop 8 campaigns very closely and even though I live on the opposite coast of the US, I was absolutely devastated. I feared that this kind of thing would soon follow, and now here it is. The gay community have worked so hard to gain these rights, and now they are being stripped away from them.
I'm from California. I fought Prop 8. Let me tell you something. It doesn't matter how much money goes into an election, it makes no difference how many hopeful dreams you have. You will not sway a persons vote unless you educate them, and spend the time and energy. Don't assume you will win. Let your voice be heard. Whether your Homosexual, or Heterosexual, stand up and let everyone know you are voting NO ON 1. What happened in CA, can't happen again. The west coast is cheering for you.
well at least most people in maine are smart gay marriage it is fair love should be the most important thing. i find catholics so amusing I mean the priests rape kids they now allow divorce how never used to be able too and all the cheating on spouses and how many really go to church every Sunday. my protestant mom is buried next to my catholic dad in a really nice catholic cemetery how many rules broken? love is the only real long lasting rule! LOVE IS THE WAY Love should be the only rule
I share your disappointment; the US should start to live up to its freedom-laden rhetoric and stop dogmatically imposing Christian-right monocultural norms at the expense of the underrepresented. Great video, 5*/fav.

To answer your question:
The non religious argument is semantic: Marriage means the union between a man and a woman.

Why?

That is the way the language evolved, and I understand there were many different organizations but all of them involved people of different genders.

I wish Maine the very best of luck. NO ON 1!

America should be very embarrassed that it's not living up to its reputation! I think we should go the old fashion way and protest!!

Very well spoken and articulate. I'm with you on this. In France, church and state are separate, and I don't see why it should be a problem.
