@arronnov But the majority of Japanese, Chinese and Koreans came to the US over 100 years ago. Most were the poor, rural, disenfranchised of those races. They adopted Western first names as they became American citizens, but kept their Asian surnames. They never tried to "become white." "American white democracy" may not be perfect, but let's be honest-- it's as good as there is, for the greatest number of people. @arronnov Of course, blacks are tragically overrepresented in US prisons. Something like 60% of all prisoners are black, yet they are only 12.6% of the total population. When I was younger and more liberal-idealistic, I believed it was all the fault of the "white devil," and blacks were unfairly imprisoned. But go walk around Oakland, Detroit, etc. today, and you might reverse your idea of who the "devils" are.

Except blacks feel like they can commit crimes, but still not be guilty as charged, because of past oppression. Again, blacks lack accountability, and this hurts the whole system. @arronnov And there was a little thing during WWII called Executive Order 9066, when Roosevelt sent all U.S. mainland Japanese to internment camps for duration of war. Most of them lost their businesses, their life savings, their constitutional rights. They had to start all over. Yet their sons volunteered--from behind barbed wire--to become the most decorated fighting units in US military history. Today, Japanese Americans are basically a successful group. It's all due to cultural values.

When the West arrived in the 13th-14th centuries, the usual things took place--trade, barter, Christian missionaries. @arronnov You're right about that. And Japan (like Germany) is ashamed today of their imperial cruelty to their neighbors-- you know they are, you can feel it. They say when the Portuguese first arrived in Japan in the 1400s and showed off their muskets to the samurai, Japan's response was to borrow the muskets. The beautiful thing about Steele: not only is he 100% correct, he gives blacks an out. He dismisses the notion of inherent inferiority. He says it's a matter of right thinking, effort and perseverance. So while we may never "prove" whether one race is "smarter" than another, it actually shouldn't matter. It's irrelevant. "Doing the right thing" is what matters, and results will follow.
It seems the me that the Jesse Jackson-style "I'm a victim" mentality is strikingly similar to Jewish groups crying about anti-semitism. My parents nor grandparents were racist, none of my ancestors ever owned slaves - yet I'm still constantly accused by misguided blacks that all white people were slave owners and have tried to keep them down. @arronnov But the majority of Japanese, Chinese and Koreans came to the US over 100 years ago. Most were the poor, rural, disenfranchised of those races. They adopted Western first names as they became American citizens, but kept their Asian surnames. They never tried to "become white." Instead, they had strong group loyalty, because there was sanctioned and overt racism against them. And their skin (like mine) is on the fair side. But even if it was jet-black, they would still succeed.

@arronnov Black African countries are now independent and removed from their colonial governments, but have basically all gotten destabilized, poorer, and lower on the HDI (Human Development Index) since white flight from their countries. Crumbling infrastructure, tribal warfare, violence, disease, reliance on foreign aid. You are correct, histories of prior oppression have left psychological damage on blacks worldwide. Perhaps blacks could hold a global summit to address these issues.

@arronnov Employ whatever form of government it takes to elevate the people of Africa on the Human Development Index, GNP/GDP, life expectancy, and all other indicators. "American white democracy" may not be perfect, but let's be honest-- it's as good as there is, for the greatest number of people. It works best for whites and Asians, but even those less capable and prone to complain still do better here than in their original countries. Africa should adopt that which works best for them.

@arronnov Of course, blacks are tragically overrepresented in US prisons. Something like 60% of all prisoners are black, yet they are only 12.6% of the total population. When I was younger and more liberal-idealistic, I believed it was all the fault of the "white devil," and blacks were unfairly imprisoned. But go walk around Oakland, Detroit, etc. today, and you might reverse your idea of who the "devils" are.

The difference is, in the past, whites kept firm control of things. But now they want to be good guys more, and that's fine. They still control everything, but they're too PC. Except blacks feel like they can commit crimes, but still not be guilty as charged, because of past oppression. Again, blacks lack accountability, and this hurts the whole system. Blacks are fighting to normalize their own behavioral standards in our country, but they are just not up to par. But they just won't see it that way.

Most of them lost their businesses, their life savings, their constitutional rights. They had to start all over. Yet their sons volunteered--from behind barbed wire--to become the most decorated fighting units in US military history. Today, Japanese Americans are basically a successful group. It's all due to cultural values.

When the West arrived in the 13th-14th centuries, the usual things took place--trade, barter, Christian missionaries. But after awhile, Japanese saw the missionaries fomenting subversive ideas in the people. So the Japanese government gave an ultimatum-- all Europeans out by this date, or die. The whites initially resisted, but heads did roll, so they left. Japan then shut their doors for 300 years.

They say when the Portuguese first arrived in Japan in the 1400s and showed off their muskets to the samurai, Japan's response was to borrow the muskets. A few weeks later, they returned the muskets to the Portuguese-- along with exact, perfectly-working copies they quickly taught themselves to manufacture. The Japanese "diaspora" occurred between 1885-1925, when hundreds of thousands emigrated to Hawaii, US mainland, Brazil and Peru. All of those groups balanced Meiji-era values with assimilation into their new countries over the next century. It seems the me that the Jesse Jackson-style "I'm a victim" mentality is strikingly similar to Jewish groups crying about anti-semitism. My parents nor grandparents were racist, none of my ancestors ever owned slaves - yet I'm still constantly accused by misguided blacks that all white people were slave owners and have tried to keep them down. When you constantly blame people for things that happened generations before they were even born, or possibly even before their ancestors even came here, it only creates more hostility and racism against that race. The whole claim is targeted at continuing racism - wake up people.

My father told me as a child that if your brown or black you gotta work twice as hard and beat that white kid in your class to become successful. I never understood what that meant until i became a young adult and faced true racism and prejudice in society. But you know what that means. When a black kid or a brown kid is FORCED to work twice as hard to get the same recognition. It makes us better prepared to face anything life throws at us, Just keep working hard and you can take on anything.

That dosent change the fact though that i do feel like sometimes i get treated differently because of my race alone. do i feel like a victim? No. But racist attitudes do exist and i think my father meant you have to work harder to overcome them.

I want agree with you. But can we explain the employment biased? For instance a black male graduated from college have the same chance to find a job as a white male with felony background. I believe that black must get valuable education in order to fix their problems, open their business, and hire their own people. In order to lessen their economical dependency in other etnic groups.

Both Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have both been found to have benefited a great deal monetarily from making claims of racism. While the rest of us may have not, there are those out there who exploit and profit from screaming racism. I believe that was his point....

It seems that Mr. Steele has an obvious vendetta against Jackson and Sharpton and the like. Can he prove that the two have profited in this manner? Can you? Were Dr. Martin Luther King or W.E.B. Du Bois opportunists who sought monetary rewards for their candid claims of racism? Better yet, where is the payoff for the rest of us who, in 2009, realize that Race remains a major issue?

Yes. It has been well documented that Sharpton & Jackson have indeed profited(monetarily and in promoting their "brand".) by calling companies racist. Check out the book called SHAKEDOWN, then google about Jackson and how he profited big bucks from Texaco.

MLK and Du Bois(one of my favorite sociologist) lived in a different time. We didnt have rights, there were Jim Crow laws, we benefited from their work. How do we benefit from Texaco paying the Jesse Jackson off or from Sharptons finger pointing?

You know, I cannot speak on the motivations of Jesse Jackson nor Al Sharpton, their conscience and God will be their judge. However, I understand that when there is smoke there is often fire; and at least Sharpton and Jackson have been courageous enough to sound the alarm (pardon the analogy). As far as the Texaco situation is concerned, I saw no concrete evidence that Jackson (personally) received a dime in the settlement (in the interest of fairness, I did not research it so extensively).

Duke power Company case) that puts employers liable for discriminatory practices whether intentional or de facto; thus Texico Was legally responsible and in my estimation the settlement was fair.

Akbar gives a great deal of credit to E.Muhammad (EM) and he only wrote two books (1st about healthy living) so therefore you would know his book as well. 2nd , if you knew the works of EM you would have to consider him, as you say A black conservative,(E.M.would view Steele as a fool)

Your incorrect as to these guys being my fav authors, however they did write good intro books. Steele is wrong because he is disingenuous, review the breath of his work. Im very knowledgeable on this subject, extremely so. To be honest with you, Ive been following the works of Dr Steele for over 18yrs. He is not impressive, and I truly believe he is deliberately dishonest for personal gain. I encourage you to read H. Madhubuti, N.kbar, E. Muhammad G. Wills , then go back over all of Steeles book and writings. Get a feel from both sides of the fence

What you may want to know is that I was raised on Akbar and at times I am still a fan. Still, after doing studies in sociology, and after reading the works of Steele and other so called "black conservatives," I found that they made a lot more sense and that they presented more reasonable facts, that did not seem to be tainted by anger or bitterness.
Rather than pointing me towards your fav. authors, why not explain why Steele is wrong?
