  • My friend's a police officer and, when I was visiting him, a person held herself hostage. Threatening to kill herself.

But at the last minute she turned her gun on the police officer, who was trying to talk to her, and made him have to shoot her.

I think that's worse than just shooting yourself; like you think they all have no feelings about killing people?

The officer who did it had feelings about it. He took a 3-month break from duty b/c of it.

  • its not her life. its also the lives of her children

  • SkyLovesHim1 did you not see at the end? How happy she was with her children? And you still ask why they didnt let her kill herself? Are you that naive?

  • De3ar Matthuss18. In the ABS hmmm as far as i know all your intestines are in there and if they bust you dead speacially if ll you nice poop sqirts all over your organs! But as a non medical professional she couldnt have known that!

But still i think you are right she didnt want to die but thats why we call them suiciders because they are just running away when life gets hard!

I would take pills if i ever would consider to kill myself! does this comment mean i am suicidle!

  • Very touching ending! Is that not good enough to bring this great show back?!?

  • Ehhh it's not normal no.

  • I kind of agree. But she seems happy at the end.

  • melissa u have 2 kids. u dont want them to watch u do it or find u do u ?

  • it's amazing to see that she survived it

  • Have you ever been put through the hell of someone committing suicide? My family was. She has her kids to think about, the people who have to deal with her funeral, her finances, etc. Suicide is pure selfishness.

  • The "right structure" they're talking about is the descending aorta. If you hit the descending aorta, it will kill you within 5 to 10 minutes. It's one of the major arteries in the circulatory system.

OTOH it's protected by all kinds of organs for that very reason.

  • there's a latter segment in season 5 where suicide is mentioned again but it's teen suicide.

  • holy shit...

  • my sister was 8 and i was 15 this was like 9 years ago and she walked in when i was trying to commit suicide, she cried and said dont do it! and since then i never even thought of it. she saved my life, and we have been close ever since. she is 19 now and i am 26, i love her so much!

  • wow thatz good! wat were u tryin to do?! hang ur self?

  • did she live ?

  • @dontworrybxhappy. Yes at 5:52 shes there with her kids

  • Lol. Watch the whole video before asking this kind of question. ;)

  • and.......here....we....go.....AHHHHHHH lol she did not want to die thats why she shot herself in the abs

  • Yah I thought so too, she probably wanted to have a chance in "being saved".

  • We have a tape of my husband's last minutes, captured by accident when the machine turned on just as his friend picked up the phone.

He was begging for a chance to get out of the fire he was trapped behind, but he never made it.

Sometimes life's ironies have profound effects on me.

  • Where did she get a gun if she was insane?

also she got her kids back damn

  • It was her ex-husband's gun. I don't know why he didn't take it with him when he left. Most people don't leave behind weaponry.

  • depressed not insane!!!

  • The only thing I know is my daughter's dad begged for his life-and wasn't allowed to have it. He died in Tower 1 of the World Trade Center.

Since then I haven't been able to understand why someone who's being offered life would refuse to keep it.

  • That woman did need help but I am glad that she is now happy with her children. That was her reason to live!!!!!!

  • The chance of a suicide being successful has a lot to do with how long it's been planned. A person who just suddenly decides they don't want to live any more has a much greater chance of failing to kill themselves then a person who's been planning it for a long time. People who've planned it generally have done research to find the fastest, most effective and most pain free way to go as they can find. In this case I would say she did not plan that one for any real amount of time.

  • What's the point of locking a door now? That cop made it look so easy and just kicked it down xD

  • hahaha agreeeeed !

  • "we didn't know what kind of gun was involved, whether it was a handgun, or a rifle, some of the different types of guns are gonna have different effects, so all sorts of these things are racing through our minds"

"i pulled her forward a little bit and there was no exit wound, my concern at that time that the internal injuries could have been caused by the bullet"

    morons w/ guns

  • the dog! OMG. Im not watching that episode.

  • What The Hell Was She Thinking.

  • Remember: "Suicide is a permanent situation to a short term problem" It's NEVER worth it

  • LIFE is a permanent problem. Until you die. ^_^

  • what kind of DOLT would wanna kill herself?!

  • "Door's locked"

    *kicked*

  • poor woman. i feel bad for the children though.

  • This is so sad.

  • i feel sorry for people like her. I was suicidal before, so i know how she felt.

  • they just want to get attention

  • Suicidal people obviously NEED attention, right? What's so bad about needing help? If she was ok, maybe she'd have found a safer, "saner" way to ask for it. And people do reach the end of their rope sometimes. You don't have any way of knowing what her troubles were.

  • ndrssz: You obviously no nothing about suicidal people. I'm an EMT, I've seen suicidal people and you are way off base.

  • not all of them. the woman there made her mind up, and intended to go away without making much of a fuss about it. she was determined.

Police officers are trained to recognize an attention seeker from someone really willing to die.

  • no it's called being suicidal. either depressed or just cant take it anymore.

  • ok your retarded! people who are suicidal obviously have problems that they are not getting treated.

  • i was waiting for her to shoot her self in the head but i guess shes not a very smart suicider ..who shoots themselves in the stomach that just fucking hurts and not a sure chance of dieing and it ll be a slowly painful death

  • You honestly believe she was in the right state-of-mind to think about all that at that moment? All she could think about is that she wanted to be dead.

  • Mostly men choose to aim at their head,

women usually point it at their chest/heart.

  • Oh well thanks for letting me know, thats what i was waiting for but now i dont have to waste my time.

  • Suicide is very sad, i was going to commit suicide but my mom called the cops. they came in and got the gun away from me. i owe my life to those police men.

  • what happened to make you want to kill yourself i think life is wonderful and thankgod that your alive to experence it with your family so don't commeit suicide you will just be hurting the people who love you the most even if i don't know you i still care about your saftey and all the others im a very careing person and besides you will wish you were still alive cause you would reilize that, that was a stupied move even if you were smart thankgod that the cops helped you in time...

  • As a teenager I went through that as well. 22 years later I am very happy I didn't, since then I have experienced so many wonderful moments in my life!

Life is at time very difficult, but such hard time do pass and good times do come again.

For me no one was there, I just decided to leave instead and this way, got myself a new life! :)

I did come back 6 years later to make contact with my family, which I enjoy now.

  • I was depressed for several years and was suicidal some times. But when I started to catch myself thinking of quick and painfree ways to kill myself then I decided to seek help. I´m not completly fine but I´m getting better. Scary thing is, the depression and the suicidal thoughts started when I was only 11.

Luckily, guns are not as easy to get in Sweden as in US.

  • I agree with Jibjun80, they say suicide is selfish, perhaps it is but do you really think a suicidal person cares that it would be? They don't care to even live.

  • *nods* What I said to codygough's comment applies there, too.

  • Yes and She will get treatment and help.

  • Telephofee wrote, "No, they aren't selfish and people shouldn't be mad. When you hurt so bad, you just do what you can for it to go away, even if it is negative."

I agree! And it's horrible when somebody feels that he or she has no other alternative. It's a rash decision, but selfish is definitely the wrong word.

  • haha! cop- " doors locked" (kicks door down) haha:P

  • im suprised i could not be the anserer of that phone expesialy when she shot herself

  • Was so scary when she shot herself :|

  • "Door's locked...*BAMMMMMMMMMMMM*!" He kicked that door in hella pro style.

  • good god!!! i did not think she would do it! when the shot went off and she screamed, my guts just wrenched! it was awful, i couldnt help but tear up! jesus man, nowadays something that graphic wouldnt be on TV like that! damn, that poor woman, her voice was just sooo heartbreaking, and the operator, lord i felt for her too...it makes me want to reach out and hold every suicidal person in the world! call me sensitive, but that is just too much to bear,i hope people find a way through it, IJN.

  • Ehsona, that just shows that you're a caring person. Wish there were more people like you around. Some people just assume suicidal people are cowardly or selfish, but it isn't the case. I wish somebody would have taken my uncle and reached out and held him before he committed suicide, but he didn't tell anyone what he planned to do.

  • Strange she kept picking up the phone and that she didn´t shoot herself in the head. Maybe somewhere deep inside she did hope that someone would safe her...Maybe she just didn´t think of another way. So sad that people do things like that.

  • omg I didn't think she was going to do it, glad she survived it though.

  • Manic Depression is not called "Bi-Polar Disorder"

they didnt know what to call it then, and so many people suffer from it now, they threw a fancy name on it.

Same hard sickness, for the people who suffer from it, and those who love them.

  • Are you sure? I thought bi-polar disorder was just a newer name for manic depression.

  • I am sorry allgood2000 I meant to put *NOW CALLED* sorry bout that, you knew exactly what i meant..:)

  • My cousin is bi-polar and when my mom and I lived with her, she was just a basket case sometimes. It was sad to watch. I think she's getting some help now, though. At least, I hope she is.

  • sexy hot smile....!! she must be bomb :D

  • "Boomer's Rescue"

  • i've had panick attacks, a few i've felt like killing myself, but my dad holds me down

  • you know what i have those too, and thats not the way out, if you ever wanted to talk to someone who goes throught this let me know. cuz i know what its like, and its not the end.

  • actually im not being too insensitive bc my views are coming from me being a woman who may never be able to have kids of her own, if i was the type to be able to have kids then yes i wud be insensitive, but im not. Sorry if i offended u, but also u shud know im not downing suicidals bc im a student nurse and i have expericences with helping those in need!

  • this is just so freaking crazy half of suicide people dont want to do it once its already started they want to back out and not die but its too late sometimes.

  • I used to love this show because they always live.

  • The system is messed up. When 911 or a suicide hotline gets a suicidal caller, their response is to hospitalize them involuntarily. I wouldn't be opposed to hospitalizations if they treated the patients with respect in the hospital. Instead, they push drugs with serious side effects (inability to urinate, weight gain sometimes 50 pounds or more, muscle twitching and spasms, tardive dyskinesia, increased risk for diabetes and even liver failure)! Often, the system does more harm than good

  • because some suicidal callers will NOT call, knowing they will be taken to these places, which aren't much better than county jails. The patients are treated like the scum of the earth by the psychiatrists, and obnoxious inexperienced staff members.

  • I didn't think she was actually going to shoot herself. Thought she probably shot the gun in the air to scare the operator or something. Some of the comments on here are just obnoxious.

  • suicide is nto the answer if you commit suicide your going to miss out on so much important stuff.there are people who care and that are willing to help you.

  • i dont mean to sound TOO insensitive, but how cud a MOTHER think abt taking her life? Im a woman who may never get a chance to physically have kids, and i HATE when others who can take advantage of the fact that they have kids and are selfish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • next time, shoot urself in the head

  • wtf dude.

  • How about this. Next time, don't shoot yourself at all!

  • I am so glad she surrived and had the chance to recover. Depression is so painful and she is very lucky to get a second chance. Suicide is the one of worst things in the world.

  • This would be one of my worst nightmares as a 911 dispatcher.

  • I know, you are so helpless...

  • She didn't call the dispatcher, the dispatcher called her. She didn't seem to have any intention of letting anyone know what she was going to do. It sounded to me like she had made the decision to kill herself. She was bi-polar, so I don't find it hard to believe that she was actually suicidal.

  • heres a friendly peace of advise and this may sound a bit messed up. If the subject wants to commit suicide, then they will do it w/o creating a scene. As you can tell, Melisa is playing phone hook,y wit the dispatcher. She hangs up fully expecting the dispatcher to call back. Its a bit of phycology

  • True & not only that but the reason the dispatcher called in the first place was that they heard a shot fired. If that isn't a loud enough alarm bell to test the neighbours loyalty to human life vs bring interrupted to their favour TV program what is? Don't make a noise if you're going to do it, u will just do it w/o fuss. Usually the ones that do it see death as escape to something better rather than being very sad. Death has to appeal as an escape fantasy not just leaving the drudgery of life

  • She said she fired the shot accidentally because she thought the gun was on safety. I don't think she was trying to draw attention to herself.

  • doors locked ! LOL not anymore ~!

  • yea she tried to take her life but u know what she moved on and realized that her kids are more important good 4 her

  • Actually Dianna was wrong in telling Melissa that there were deputies outside. The deputies should have just broken in with their skeleton keys & crept in whilst Melissa was being detained on the phone & then she would never have found the gun again from the kids.we can see that if help is there soon after victim has a good chance of survival as long as they dont shoot themselves un the mouth to the brain which makes me think M didnt want to do it properly & probably thought she'd be rescued .

  • i agree

  • in a perfect world that would work fine, but in real life cops dont have "skeleton keys" and if they tried to pick the lock it would have been noticable inside even if she was on the phone. not to mention im sure the suicidal lady probably saw the officers in her yard before the dispatcher told her they were there. so good thinking, but its just not a real plausible scenario.

  • well actually that is not true. For law enforcement, they HAVE to let their precense be known.

  • I don't know if that was a comment or a complicate OneSkiWonder, but bullets can bounce around in your body and the EMTs and paramedics in this segment probably assumed that the bullet is still in the body because they didn't find an exit wound, in the EMS, you have to act fast and assume the worst, you do something called "ongoing assessment" it's when you assess the patient in the ambulance (enroute to Hospital) on the field you just assume, so you can get out of there. I'm with the EMS.

  • I wonder why she answered the phone. I think it's good she did, just kind of surprised me.

  • "I checked her back to see if there was an exit wound and there wasn't so the bullet was obviously still inside of her" Bullets bounce. They can richochet (excuse spelling) off of bones and come out the same side of the body the went in. It's amazing how far EMS has come.

  • Um, If the bullet richochet 100% out the same hole it must hit a bone straight on, and then it would probably just break the bone.

It could bounce on a couple of bones, with a 30 degree angle, but the chanse that happens is... 2 on a million?

  • The chances of it comeing out the same hole are slim to none, but I have seen on multiple accounts that the bullet has exited on the same side of the body as it went in.

  • That's a really scary situation and hard to deal with. the emergency dispatcher did a good job!

  • dont know how to thank em?? Dont shoot your self any more is a good start.

  • I know he was just trying to be friendly, but it sounds so weird at 4:05 when he says "hi melissa, HOW YOU DOING???" I mean, if she were awake she'd be like WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? I'M BLEEDING TO DEATH AND MY KIDS ARE PROBABLY GOING TO COMMIT SUICIDE FOR HAVING HEARD ME DO THIS.

  • her kids was at the neighbours house

  • Actually, he wasn't just trying to be friendly. What he was actually doing was accessing her level of conscieousness by seeing if she would respond to his voice in any way. That is an important part of the accessment and helps determine the course of treatment.,

  • Also, please keep this in mind:

Every minute, someone in the united states commits or attempts suicide. You can make a world of difference. Be a light to someone like Diana was to Melissa.

  • On the contrary, I don't think ABroadwaystar2534 is chemically balanced. :/

  • That was dumb to shoot herself!!! I MEAN WHAT KIND OF IDIOT WOULD DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT!!!!! THAT'S WHY YOU SHOULD GET EDUCATED BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING STUPID!!!!

  • It's called bi-polar disorder. It didn't really have anything to do with her intelligence.

  • Abroadwaystar totally has no idea what he's talking about...suffering from a bi-polar disorder truly has no bearing on a person's IQ; whatever Melissa had in her skull that caused the chemical imbalance, not due to her own intelligence, unlike that jackass that made this original comment

  • As a person who work with Suicidal people everyday, I can tell you that her being educated has 100% nothing to do with it. I've worked with ppl with 4 an 5 PhD's an ppl that has never been to school befor. As for the " Kind of idiot to do this ", could be your sister could be your dad you never know!

  • tvshowsondvd, com is where you can vote to put rescue 911 on dvd, rescue 911 has 434 votes

  • anybody else notive the tape they use to record the calls is always SCOTCH?

  • There was one segment where they used Dictaphone tape instead of Scotch.

  • I will never understand suicide. I just don't get it.

  • I won't either and I don't want to, I work with people who have better reasons to kick the bucket but depressed people need to go and aide other people and see how helping people makes them feel helpful and happy.

  • I don't think it's that simple. If someone has a chemical imbalance in their brain that interferes with their mood or thought process, their mood or outlook is not completely within their control. Telling a bi-polar person in a depressed state to look on the bright side of things would be like telling a someone with A.D.D. to pay attention, or telling someone with schizophrenia to quit being paranoid.

  • I can't believe you are even on here when you don't know anything about people who are depressed and how it can play a vital part of their life. Just because you are chemiclely balanced doesn't mean others are. Just get your shit straight before you come on here thinking you know what your talking about. ASSHOLE.

  • it isn't that simple and yes you're right to dont want to understand suicide coz it's really painful..

  • Poor woman. Imagine what frame of mind she would have been in to do that to herself.

  • ACK! I thought she was dead for shur

  • omg i thought it was gunna end with her not killing herself but then i heard that scary ass scream after a gunshot....freaky

  • freaky
