  • We are really proud of Her thanks

  • Thanks to Runa Laila to start with Bengali song..........

  • i m really proud of her. She is a divine gift for us from GoD

  • Wow on her accent!

  • She is a lagend and song many paki songs

  • feel very proud to be a south asian when i see this kind of singers.feel so proud to have this kind of talent in our countries( IND BAN PAK)......but it really hurts when we fight with each others without any reason. ....once upon a time we were all together but the western rulers divided us into hindu muslim and put us on fighting and still they r getting the benifit from this.God plz give us an effective brain to think good and a peaceful mind to love others.

  • WoW...Great Video. And Sandu i cannot agree more than what you said.....

Its sad that some people cannot recognise the real talent that runs within Runa Layla... Consider the fact that she does sing in more than 2 language with most of the audience being non-bengali, she still sang what her heart called.... we should appreciate the quality not the difference. Thanks to you and randominitializer for pointing it out.

  • good

  • what a beautiful voice ...her playback singing in pakistani milesstone films like Umrao jaan ada , Anjuman ,Anmol IS STILL FRESH IN OUR MINDS ..

  • this song is very popular all over the world among the bangladeshi, even india and pakistan.runa is awaz ka devi. i am pakistani but i like music of runa.pakistan is proud of her. i am kamali from peswar.

  • Cool

  • What is the name of this song?

  • shader lao banailo mure boiragi.........thats the name of the song.

  • When i was a kid, I heard that one of the Indian ministers asked Bangladesh that if we give Runa Laila to them, they will give us Ganges water in return.... lol... ofcourse he was n't serious but was only trying to prove how much he is a fan of Runa laila...

  • Runa laila released an album with DCS (danny charlie sheen) in London. She is a good singer and a talented artiste from bangla:) this brought fond memories of those 80's music

  • Very nice...she is still very popular in Pakistan

  • there are millions of bengalis living in karachi .. which is a good sign...

whatever has happened in 1971 with the people of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) was a big sazish by india and western powers, which was further handled badly by (West) Pakistan's Military-cum-Punjabi Establishment and feudal lords of that time.

East Pakistan ... Bangladesh + West Pakistan Zindabad...

I wish we have good relations... atleast our defence, currency and foreign affairs should be same

  • Good on you. Politics and propaganda everywhere even when listening to music. You guys are doing great. No need to look within and only believe in conspiracy theories.

  • What is East pakistan?????Only BANGLADESH

    it should be BANGLADESH+PAKISTAN. Zindabad

  • great Runa Laila we are proud of you. thank you

  • Runa is not only for bengali ppl but for all those who admire good and melodious songs...she can even sing in more dan 15 different languages...amazing talent...Runa apa amra tomake onek onek valobasi...one of d reasons dat i feel proud being a bangladeshi is Runa Laila.Amar desh, mati, fool, akash jemon sotti thik temni sotti Runa Laila. She is a true representative of Bangladesh...

  • she is also famous for the song " oh lal meri pat" i do not know how she sing a sindhi song so well which became the most famous song in the indian ,pakistani and Bangladeshi history .

    great

  • she learnt it from pakistan she worked with malka tarunm Noor jhan who also sang it

  • Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic

oi oi oi oi chak de patte

    lisen that all time

  • can anyone tell me the name of sonu niigaam's best urdu song

  • yawn...

  • BEAUTIFUL ARRANGEMENT

  • the way Sonu Nigam moves his hands with the song tells me he can actually understand the Bengali lyrics! great singers from subcontinent know so many languages! e.g. Runa Laila can even sing in Sindhi!

  • sonu nigam can understand bengali..he even gt his bengali album..

  • Fantastic!!!!!!!!!

    Beautul dance and music, thanks!!!!!!

  • what she saying anybody

  • When people who don't appear to belong to Pakistan/Bangladesh/India can appreciate music (see guy in white at 1:37), why the hell do we subcontinentals keep fighting. If we, the people, focused on celebrating our similarities and differences rather than hating each other for it we'd be a fantastic continent!

I'm from Pakistan and speak Urdu. So if you speak Bengali please can you write down what she is singing, it would be great.

    She's fantastic!

  • She sings about "shader laoo" a common pumpkin consumed in Bangladesh that made her a wandering gypsy... One of those famous songs but you have to be Bangladeshi to associate with it.

  • why just bangladeshi, indian bengalis too!

  • @rriturajg : of course! you are right. thanks for pointing that out. :-)

  • DONT SEE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDIA AND BANGLADESH COZ INDIA IS OUR NIGHBOUR WE R IN ONE FAMILY .

  • Laau is called bottle gourd or doodhi in Hindi...I m not sure wats the word in Urdu though.

    "Shaader laau baanailo more boiragi"

Doodhi ne mujhe jogan bana diya

"Aami gaya gelam , kaashiko gelaam shonge neya boishnobi"

Main Gaya gayi, kashi ko gayi lekin saath mein nahi mere vaishavi(female krishna followers)

Now thats wat I understood, I m certain theres some inner meaning to it, which i dont know! :)

  • Lao is a very common vegetable known in english as bottle gourd/ sweet gourd... Besides being eaten the gourd, once dried, is also used to make a simple musical instrument which is traditionally used by "Bairagis"/Ascetics... This FOLK song may be called "an ode to the sweet bottle-gourd"

  • After so many years, why so many people here still questions about her nationality!! She is one of the few greatest BANGLADESHI who represents BANGLADESHI culture, song, language to all over the world.

  • She is Bengali settled in Bangladesh, so she is Bangladeshi by birth, but more importantly, by choice. Her music though, like all music is universal, and we in Pakistan do respect her a lot. Runa Laila and Shahnaz Begum are two names from Bangladesh singers that are very popular in Pakistan. In Islamabad I saw a photograph of a teenage (13 or 14) Runa Laila singing at a function (dated1964). And what a pretty lady, she used to be a heartthrob. Joi Bangla :)

  • @bengalboy2008: you're right, by birth Runa Laila is Pakistani. If BD production companies pushed for it then she could start singing in Urdu and have massive audiences in India and Pakistan especially.

  • As you know, Bengali's would never "push" for Urdu... for obvious reasons...

  • BoyBangla: ATN Music a company of ATN Bangla will be releasing Hindi albums by Bangladeshi singers, an example would be Eva Rahman and Bappi Lahiri. Also, we watch Hindi cinemas and listen to Hindi songs I don't understand what's the point of avoiding singing Hindi songs officially, it's kind of a hypocrisy thing.

  • Please watch Kahan Mile woh Pyar...the most beautiful love song ever written and produced...by typing mahmoodkhanvideos on search...

  • Thank you benglaboy2008 for your valubale information, but you see she came back to her parents country coz she loved Bangladesh though she was at her peak in Pakistan. And ofcourse she RULES Bangladeshi music now and ever.

  • Reading the history of comments, I was surprised that so many people are confused about the nationality/ ethnicity of Runa Laila.

RUNA LAILA IS, BY BIRTH, A PAKISTANI FROM KARACHI.

HOWEVER, SHE IS A BENGALI BY ETHNICITY - LANGUAGE, CULTURE, HERITAGE AND SINCE 1974 IS A CITIZEN OF BANGLA.

She of course, as musician, belongs to all.

(Many prominent Bengali's still remain in Pakistan)

  • Runa Laila was born in Bangladesh Bengaliboy2008 . who gave you the misinformation that she was born in Pakistan?! She might have lived in west pakistan for her dad might have worked there but that was normal scenario then as Bangladesh and Pakistan were the same country. But She is Bangladeshi by birth and by ethnicity.

  • @bengalboy2008

Buddy. You are so wrong. Runa was born in Sunamganj town in Sylhet province, north eastern Bangladesh. That is where her mothers family are from. Her father was from Rajshahi province in north west Bangladesh. Really appreciate it if you could stop repeating incorrect information in a parrot like and presumptious manner. It is misleading people and disrespecting the singer herself.

  • "Lauer eto modhu ..jane go jadu..lau dhorlam shonger shongi.....ha ha ha."

Runa Laila is the pride of Bangladesh, but she was honoured in India,Pakistan too, for her contribution in music. She is a universal singer. We love you Runa.

  • shader lau, banailo morey boiragee...!!! hai hai

  • Runa Laila is a terrific singer every bit of the way... God bless.

  • This is a song I used to listen during my childhood. But I don't know which language is this.

Now, I have come across this song after, may be, at least ten years. Thanks for uploading!

  • to shamlink

This is a Baul song from Bangladesh.

    The language is obviously Bangla.

  • Always pay attention to the good and positive in all things, in that way....we shall harvest good and disperse good. Peace.

  • TonyPaki: My father, a famous doctor, was killed in 1971 by Pakistanis. You can imagine my feeling.......and I agree with Shan, I have encoutered ignorant Pakistani.

Then again, there are wonderful people like you.

Brother, if there were more people like you, probably things like 1971 would not have happened.......

Don't you think though, we owe an formal apology from the Pakistani government?

  • But the hting is this army never learn from History, after 1971, they did a huge operation against Baloch Nation in 1973, sindh in 1978 and hanged The most poppular PM of the country. The same army killed peoples in our Pakhtunistan province, farmers in Okara..

At last I have to say Bengalis plz forgive us.

  • Brother We're saying sorry but u know wat they Bangali did with Pakistanis??

They were full of hate & use to say"Islamabad ki roads sy humy PatSun ki boo aty hai".

I'd like to ask that if Islamabad isn't running after there division??If we aren't eating wheat or whatever.

So both brothers were wrong & now are two different countries.

But still I Love to Join East & West Pak.

  • You see, the post-1971 Pakistanis have been reared up being taught that our forces went to Bengal to fight Indian army there and somehow the western world and India condpired to seperate East Pakistan from us. Now that I know better, i feel guilty whenever I talk to someone from Begladesh although none of the people I know have had any role to play in that genocide... Alhamdulillah. How and why was your father martyred?

  • I just want to congratulate you for such an honourable statement.

Im very surprised that the Pakistani establishments promote 1971 war as interference from west/india.

It makes sense now why so many pakistanis think that the west and India were played a part in Bangla Independence. But of course, india/west did cause separation, but it was Yahya, Ayub, & co.

  • I just want to congratulate you for such an honourable statement.

Im very surprised that the Pakistani establishments promote 1971 war as interference from west/india.

It makes sense now why so many pakistanis think that the west and India were played a part in Bangla Independence. But of course, india/west did NOT cause separation, but it was Yahya, Ayub, & co.

I wish all pakistanis are aware as you are, and decent as you are. You are a true brother.

  • You see, post-1971 pakistanis were reared up being taught that our forces went to east Pakistan to fight Indian forces and somehow the western world and India conspired to seperate Bengladesh from us.

  • Shan God Bless you and we have our not so smart Pakistani friends aware and let the world openly know so these mistakes are not repeated ever.

  • She is the best thing after Noor Jehan it is a shame we had to part to all our Bengali brotheres and sisters I say friends please try and forgive us if u can for what we did to you.

  • At least you have the knowledge and mentality to accept the truth about 1971. Many of Pakistanies I met dont even know the history let alone the fact. Thanks for the comment.

  • Plz spread the word and make the world aware of the people who spread hate and not love

  • i used to listen to this song in bd...

  • oh thanks :)

  • MAN SHE MOVED EVERYBODY

  • She is our yes OUR TRESURE

  • ofcourse she is Bangladeshi. She was born in Bangladesh

  • She is awesome and she is Bangladeshi.

    ...that's it

  • She's really awesome, probably one of the most accomplished singers of all time. She's from what was then, East Pakistan, but now it's called Bangladesh.

We are really all from the same place, so there's no point in discriminating all over again.

    (P.S.- this is Sylheti, no?)

  • NOT entirely TRUE! Although Runa Laila is Bengali and was born in Bangladesh she was raised in Pakistan. She did not go to Pakistan especially to learn music. Her dad was employed w/ the then West Pakistan Govt. and therefore the entire family was based in Pakistan. How do I know? Besides her biography and interviews, my father was a student in Pakistan at the time and this is a well known fact. Her musical training and early success took place in Pakistan.

  • She was born in Pakistan, not Bangladesh

  • Says who? Where r u getting your information from?

According to Runa Laila herself, in an interview that I still have, (and will post in the next few days) - she was born in Bangladesh!

  • She was born in Karachi in a bengali family you Idiot, watch the video again! She was probably refering to he parents....

  • alright then let me ask you this. if you were born in Pakistan and and all of sudden your family left your country and went to Canada wouldn,t you still call yourself a Pakistani? God its like talking to a stupid person.

  • She is Bengali u idiot...Like I am British Bengali..she is not Pakistani...but was born in pakistan...u confused or some thing\/ u need a drawing to explain in detail???

  • Please refrain from calling others "stupid"... Such opinions and/or comments should be kept to oneself. Even though we're online there has to be some sense of decorum. One can disagree or argue but there's no reason for name calling. If you're going to leave a comment I implore you to act like a civilized person.

  • Fahmid2007: I have seen it! Several times in fact. :) And it only confirms what I already knew... Runa Laila was raised in Pakistan not born there.

Frankly it makes little difference to me if she WAS born in Pakistan or for that matter China/ India/ or even Israel.

Now if Runa Laila herself is lying in her interview and you know that to be contrary to the truth provide us with facts.

No need to call others name.

  • Runa belongs to all. She sung in Urdu, Panjabi, Sindhi, Hindi and Bangla, where she resides now. She is a Bengali no doubt and should be proud of her family background, but all other artist like Noorjahan, Lata, Mehdihasan, they all sung for all the people of the subcontinent, and they belong to all people of our subcontonent.

  • I agree 100%.

    Thanks "khanmohdsa2007" for your comments.

  • I listened to her when I was a kid and lived in Pakistan. That was late 60's and as a kid I never distingushed between one or other "type" of pakistanis... some of my best friends (and my parents best friends) were bengalis - it never made any difference. All the beangali people I remember ever knowing have been extremely kind and polite.

btw I don't think artists belong to anyone - they are universal and share their talent and art with anyone who appreciates it.

    Salaams to all.

  • well said.

  • ditto

  • yes...she is from bangladesh

  • she is Bengali.

  • can someone translate plzz

    Xxx

  • that's a big task... I'm not sure I'm up for it yet :)

Basically it's a folk song that sings the ode to a very popular kind of a gourd known as "Lao"... It's a mild vegetable(/fruit) that is very soothing on the stomach, and it takes on the flavor of just about anything you cock it with.

  • actually its a folk song ..there is a group of singers in bangladesh . they call themselves baul.. they hav their own religious belives.. which is a mix of islam hinduism and buddism.. and many more synthesis .. its a liberal way of life.. this song is a baul song.. it has a deeper meaning then its outer skin.. the summery is the outer world pulled me in to the precious bt simple life of baulism.. tc..

  • can someone tell me wot dis means

  • yap she is awesome

  • i still remember her famous song for pakistan film industry, dil dharke mai tumse kaise kahu, tht was awesome

  • Hey i luv these songs keep them going

ami khoob pochondo kori ai gan ta Dohnnobad!

  • Shader Lao Banailo More Boiragi--- absolutely brilliant.

  • Runa lailas Elder sister who was PAKISTAN national has sung many Urdu songs.

Runa laila living in bangladesh has sung mostly bengali and few hindi songs like (damadam mastakalandar).

  • debdina- Are you kidding me? Runa has sung mostly Urdu song. For example, Kate Na Kate from umrao jaan ada is an all time hit. Damadam Mastkalander is a bumper hit not only in Indiaq but also in Pakistan and Bangladesh. Runa is a well accomplished artist.

  • Runa laila is one of teh most acomplished singer in sub continent. And without question among teh top ones. many famous urdu songs are sang by her. e.g Dam Dam Mast calendar..Ring a bell?

  • Hi,i think Runaji had one Hindi album "Super Runa" back in early 80s. If you have any songs from that.

If so please post. Thanks for sharing this one.

I recall watching her on DurDarshan in India

so many times, and love Dhama Dham Mast Kalandar. She is also known in India as Bulbul from Bangladesh.

  • she's done 4 Albums in India. I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

  • this is one of my favorite song..'shadher lau', thanks so much for sharing.

  • beautiful

I dont know bengali but loves the singing of Runa ji so please upload her urdu songs, if you can

as a tribute to her, I listed this song in full as some one said music has no language at all.

  • The pride of Bangladesh & the rest of South Asia, who not afraid of promoting her roots. Many thanks for uploading :)

  • Hi Naz,

How are you? I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

    TTYS

  • Thanks!! im a big fan of SaReGaMa .. do you have more from this "classic" show..would love to see.

  • Hi NamitaS

How are you? I have some... Please bear with me. I'm busy this week but will try to convert some of the other songs from this show and upload those. Thanks!!

  • oh my god!!! i was there in the studio this day and my god- it was this day that 'history' was written!!!

  • Hi Suzumoni,

Are you in this clip? If so, which one are you? Lucky you! :)

  • What was this event about?

Runa always sings those Bengali folk songs so well (And, of course, those gorgeous Urdu songs, too). What a voice!

  • Hi mimeNo9

This was taken from "SaReGaMa" during the 1999 Christmas + NewYear Celebration that took place in London. Runa was there, along w/ Mehdi Hassan, Gulam Ali, Farida Khannum, Jagjit Singh and many others, as judge(s) for British Asian Singers competing. To the best of my knowledge she sang 3 songs total: Shadher Lau, Dum-A-Dum Masht Kalandar and Dey Dey Pyar Dey. I do have dum-a-dum but the video w/ dey dey pyar dey is lost...
