@rontenn Nobody cares who you think is the superior singer or what you think of Tom Jones's nose. Jones still draws crowds in the thousands and produces CD's that sell in the hundreds of thousands.
On the other hand, PJ Proby's hair transplant doesn't seem to be doing anything to spark CD or ticket sales and it hasn't improved his failing voice any either.

@CategoryStomper. Failing voice!?? If anything failing it's your brain. Proby is one of the very few "older" singers whose voice is still top class! Jones,Cliff Richard,Manilow,Williams,Humperdinck.....the list is endless of singers who should have retired years ago 'cos they can't cut it anymore!! You're in fantasy-land about a Proby hair transplant but Jones' giant hooter being straightened & made smaller is fact! Singing-wise Proby is a class or two higher!

@rontenn Top class? Your standards sure are low. Proby hasn't cut anything marketable in nearly 15 years. You're wasting your breath. Anybody who's heard tracks from his recent CD's on youtube knows how bad he sounds. Maybe he can squeak by at shows with lots of loud backup but his recordings are crap.
His hair transplants are no fantasy either. That Somewhere Some Hair video on youtube tells the story. You must think he's figured out how to grow more hair now than he had 50 years ago. LOL

@CategoryStomper. 30 years??? Once again you've got the facts wrong!! The period that is being investigated is from the end of 2002 to the beginning of 2008. Do your sums correctly.....that makes SIX years!! The charges against him are ridiculous & even tho' the DWP have witnesses to testify against P.J. rest assured that his lawyer also has plenty of people to call on to argue the case in P.J.'s favour! I guess the people testifying against him are just like you.....Proby haters!!

@rontenn According to his interviews on youtube Proby started drawing those benefits 30 years ago. You think because the charges span 2002-2008 he gets off scot-free for the years before that? You should ask his lawyer to explain to you what a charge of false claims for pension credit means.

@rontenn Proby's headed for jail if his lawyers don't understand those charges any better than you do.
You obviously don't know what claiming a pension credit means or you wouldn't be talking on the web about his gigs in the 80's and 90's. It's simple, he can't legally claim OVER-65 pension credits for PRE-age-65 non-working periods when he was actually working!
Good luck convincing anybody that a four-flusher like PJ Proby is the victim of a government set-up.

@rontenn Whatever your opinion is of James Brown he's known worldwide as the Godfather of Soul and a great dancer. Those antics you referred to were his trademark and audiences expected them. He always gave his fans what they wanted. One of his last shows just 6 months before his death in 2006 drew 80,000 people.
My earlier comment was about P.J.Proby's singing but I looked at some Shindig videos of his moves on stage. He couldn't dance worth a damn.

@rontenn Choreographed dance in a film scene is a different issue. Elvis knew how to move during a stage performance. If he didn't there wouldn't be any Elvis impersonators copying his stage routines.
You slammed James Brown's stage act and then you said all that matters is voice. P.J. Proby didn't have a hit with this record (or album if that's what it was) so record buyers obviously didn't think his voice was good enough to matter.

The sales of his attempt at soul reflect how little soul fans think of him. He's just a crooner who dabbled in soul and blues and that's exactly what he sounds like. He's gagging on his own tongue.

I like what he did with Staggerlee and Good Rockin' Tonight. Yeah here the mix is fucked up and the tempo ragged. You're talking about competing with Garnet Mimms AND Bert Berns. That would be laughable--ain't no such possibility. So, yeah, this is a dud. I mean, they tried. Background chorus is righteous, though. Wonder where that came from.

@rontenn Thanks for checking that out. Thing is, Berns is not famous, but his contributions to soul music are immense. I am a fan of Proby, don't get me wrong. The Garnet Mimms take on Cry Baby is just towering, though. Clearly PJ thought highly of it. So did Janis. She gave it her all, went ballistic on it.

Just one more missed opportunity to take a great song and and turn it into a real PJ Proby sound. Instead he did his usual exaggerated imitation of another artist. Little wonder these copycat recordings never went anywhere in the U.S. PJ had the voice but he thinks like an Elvis impersonator. Whether you're a Janis Joplin fan or not (I am) no one would say her version was simply a Garnet Mimms imitation.

This starts off like somebody needs to kick him into gear and his voice fades into the backup vocals on the refrain. It's poorly arranged. He's straining his voice so much around 1:11 and 2:02 it sounds like he's bringing up phlegm.
