The Senatoir gave a very stupid reason for his objection to the new child labor laws. Then again, he's a Senator AND a new-style Republican so what could one expect. But, I worked on 'truck farms' back in the 1960's when I was younger than 16. I got paid, same as the adults, by the box, quart, pint, whatever measurement for what we picked. It was a way to earn money for myself. The farmers were always grateful for the help and we had no problems. But, times have changed. Right, Senator?
I like you guys but please do not knock on agriculture it's hard enough. There is always that chance. I was raised on a farm and I worked to eat (Poverty, farms lost profit.) As far as child labor laws go here is my opinion. There are 24 hours in a day. Let kids work between 3-4 hours if you want to pay them. If not teach them to clean there own classroom atleast. Should only poor kids do this? No! All kids should do this to learn responsbility. No they should not drop out of school for a job.
@House1Mouse0 School is eight hours a child only needs to sleep between 6-7 hours. Then the time between traveling between school and home. The kid can work 2-4 hours but no more no matter what. That still leaves plenty of time to study and play. I did and I worked 4 hours a day. I passed in school and had plenty of fun. I played baseball, rode my bicycle, and played the regular nintendo. When agricultur took a hit my family suffered pretty bad. But I still cleaned my house and classroom.
@AlexanderMccarthey87 I'll give it. Learned differently when I was a kid only sleep 7 hours. Military 5-6 hours. Anyways kids volunteer for lawnscape and garden, libraries, and community service Why not pay them instead of getting free labor? Also after class why can they not clean the room. I did along with others. I mean hot water and soap is not dangerous unless the kid drinks it. Yes? No? (To me it's like saying it's wrong to pay them but it's ok when it's free.)
@House1Mouse0 I think that in the schools its ok to do, but when the process is privatized it opens up a completely different can of worms. 13 hour shifts, no pay for little work, paying the children less and taking away jobs from adults. That type of life is .ok. for adults but children don't deserve that kind of duress.
@AlexanderMccarthey87 Ah yes but this is were child labor laws can act as a union. To keep them from factories, and low pay. Instead of say it's ok to work for free. I hardly see an adults volunteer for what kids do. So if they are paid for it and since the adults hardly do those jobs it will not take away. Library assistant can be for kids since they already volunteer. (Yes I accept the school part I've been to schools where kids do nothing. So I guess we can agree there?)
@House1Mouse0 I think we can agree on that :). But the schools are so underfunded and understaffed I wonder how they'd come up with the funds for that.
@AlexanderMccarthey87 Well as far as cleaning their classrooms that should be done out of respect for their fellow classmates and teacher. Lawn & Gardening, community service, and library asstiant (The community library too.) could be paid by the community or business (child labor law to enforce fair treatment). If this is done a town would look better. And the kids would learn responsillity they could also learn about monetary value.
@House1Mouse0 As far as schools being underfunded this may shock you. Our school bored has been giving themselves a bonuse valued at $850-3000 every 3 months. When the kids in my grade found out we asked about and were told we would not understand. Funny thing my grade out of all others had the Highest attendance, Higest grades, And Highest teacher evaluation (which affects funds). So you might want to ask about it.
@AlexanderMccarthey87 They also do it in south korea, I've seen some in Germany, england, france, and when I was visiting my cousin on the rev they did it there to. So that is where I got it from.
@AlexanderMccarthey87 Also ask about the electrcity the schools leave them on even after school hours. And the school buses some drivers use them for personal use. In fact schools are not underfunded but overpaid compared to what they have. If parents actually cared about their kids they would ask these questions. But I have my doubts sorry if that may offend you.
So its not ok to force kids to work, but its ok to FORCE kids NOT to work? i understand school and such, but if they dont want to and they just want to work and can do that, whats the problem with letting them? its called Freedom of choice, STOP TELLING THE KIDS WHAT THEY CAN DO WITH THEIR FUTURE! just because you might have had a rich childhood doesnt mean every kid had it, some might need to work if they want to be able to buy that phone or that game, or to be able to go out with their friend
Are you suggesting kids should be able to quit school to have that minimum wage job (if they're lucky enough to be in a state w/ a minimum wage) in order to buy a phone, game or go out w/ friends?
You really want to compete w/ Asia's slave wages don't you?
And you don't care how stupid our nation is becoming due to a lack of education - which is becoming too expensive for the average American family - just let them all drop out because it's *freedom of choice*.
@Candyliz2003 if they dont have parents to pay for food why should they not be allowed to work a real job and not tax free illegal work? and if the parents cant demand they dont then there is other problems with them.
Bringing in Asia.. what that got to do with the US? are you saying its as bad in the US?
Freedom no matter what, and abit of common sense and a freaking brain will help make the right decision
do u know many young kids want to work because theyre parents arnt making it and they want to help out . its a whole new group of kids out there now theyre not the spoiled 80s generation. I worked with many people who grew up on farms and they are the best workers you will ever find. there is nothing wrong with working on a farm teaches kids a lot.
kids shouldnt have to work, obesity is due to all the fucking mcdonald's on every street corner.... and then i dunnoo..... burn the country down and start over, they did it wrong
The law is not against having farms, so your metaphor doesn't really make sense. People who do own pools run a risk of being libel for injuries that occur in or around them or any of their property for that matter, perhaps we should scrap those laws?
@TheDrafted "People who do own pools run a risk of being libel for injuries that occur in or around them or any of their property for that matter, perhaps we should scrap those laws?"
-Nope. Farm owners have to buy insurance to protect themselves against the same risks. This is exactly how risk SHOULD be dealt with, rather than by prohibiting valuable activities.
@Theroha The problem with well intended laws is there are almost always unintended consequences! Life is very complicated. Here's a good example. My dad and I have to put up plywood ring bins. We need a couple extra people just to stand there and hold up the plywood sheet while we bolt it. Easy. The neighbours kids help out. Say there 14 or something. And for helping you give them something, that's only proper. That means it would violate your law! That would be a criminal offence to pay them.
Our education system is shitty enough without haing 13 year olds exhausted in school from a 40 hour work week! Seriously people, how do you expect our kids to compete for the jobs of the future that will require an educated workforce if we are distracting them from their main job at that age which is gaining an education! This seems like more of the same class warfare that the GOP has been waging for the past century. Their hope is to keep the middle class poor and stupid and labor cheap!
Of course it about cheap labor for farmers. Hell "kids" raised on the family farm don't go to work for other farmers, they go find jobs that pair a fair wage, and where they don't have to listen to pissin & moanin farmer all the time. My experience in the oilfield has shown me there is nobody more dangerous to work around than a farmer who learned bad habits on the family farm. Being part of a much cater & coddled to sector in America, there's no teaching them anything
@sarawer Oh, I think that is absolutely a great idea, but with parental, not governmental, consent. And the jobs that Newt wants kids to work are ones that they would get no pay for--they'd be "doing their part" to support themelves. I worked at 14 for money to buy clothes, shoes, etc. He wants kids to work for no money, since poor kids are apparently reaping all sorts of gov't benefits and need to pay back what they have "taken." So, heck, work away at 14, but EARN, I say! :)
How much more likely to die are kids who ride in automobiles than those who don't?. I would imagine very few Amish kids have died in car accidents compared to mainstream kids. So why don't we ban children from riding in cars? It's safer.
@hallavast Its like trying to outlaw alcohol. It might be beneficial but the public would not stand for it and the country would probably not work any more.

From someone who use to work on a farm as a child I would like to say your wrong. Not about having child labor laws. About being against this law. The only difference between work and play is the attitude. I loved helping my family around the house. More children need to. Especially if they live in a rural community. I love TYT but not on this issue. Just make sure they do not allow facilities or corporations to hire kids.
Let's redefine the term hard work: Any profession(s) that can shorten your lifespan. I seriously doubt being a Senator falls under that definition. Is it tedious, time consuming, personally compromising, I'm quite certain of that. However, I'm sick and tired of elites defining what hard work is, especially when they fail to mention that many of them had an inclusive network of people ahead of time to benefit from.
To the various people imagining kids 'gardening' or 'detassling' and thinking "what's the big deal?". These new child labor laws: they are not talking about that. It specifically targets the kind of farm jobs that should only be handled by an adult; the kind of work that can and has killed children; ie, the kind of jobs that child labor laws were created to protect children from in the first place, and for the same reasons.
When I was 14 I detasseled corn for about 2 and a half weeks in late summer and made enough money to buy myself a go-kart and had a blast. BTW there was so much scantily clad pussy I could not wait to get to work every day. Cenk,Ana you are totally wrong on this and you are making yourselves look like pompous spoiled city punks. There are jobs children should not do on a farm but some jobs can be done safely and the kids learn about money, work ethic and where food comes from.
@spacedude61 1. Pussy has no place in this argument. 2. Kids should be going to school not focusing on a job that could be given to an adult. 3. America fought for these very same labor laws that you're for some reason against. Children working and not being able to enjoy their childhood, not to mention working for less wages, is never a good thing. Many children learn about money and work ethic without having to work on a farm. Your argument is invalid.
I worked on different farms in a somewhat rural part of Denmark from ages 15 to 19 where i moved away from home.
The jobs i did where mostly light because Danish law is strict around how hard and how much i can work. The issue is the republicans wants to remove most of the child labor laws as they are there now.
Having restrictions on how hard a young person can work is a good idea or you can risk having a regression to the 1900's in terms of child labor.
Let the kids work! I cant believe theirs a general agreement here that this particular "child" labor law isn't ridiculous. I live in a suburban town but their are farms at the outset of some neighboring cities and i have friends who use to work over the summer, VOLUNTARILY, on their friends farm or agriculture business in high school. They got a lot of money for it. This is going way to far. The only work kids will be able to get in the future will all be sedentary if this keeps up.
@cristinarush if we really want to prepare kids for the future, we can just make them send out applications every week for no reason while they stay unemployed. how is it productive to take a job that could go to an adult and give it to a kid? i have fucking bills to pay so don't tell me your precious little suzie needs to practice working so that some day, when she can't find a job, she remembers what it was like to have an income she could spend on lipgloss and videogames.
@froggymicwop Theres no way the money being made on the side by a teen who works on a farm is significant enough 4 an adult 2 hold that job and pay bills. Admittedly farm works hard and long work but being kids you cant work the same hours as an adult anyways. It was 20 hours a week when I was growing up. That translated 2 a few hours in the evening or early morning mucking cow crap or driving a tractor that baled hay which was $100 by weeks end under the table.
@rikkmode oh, sorry, i didn't realize. yeah, i guess some brat learning the value of a dollar is more important than people who actually need jobs getting them to support themselves. silly me.
Fuck you law makers. This is so wrong on so many levels. Its like they are aiming to become a 3rd world country. Get your shit together again America.
The obesity epidemic is a lie. There are no more fat kids by percentage than there has been for decades. The only thing that has changed is their testing for obesity. They didn't even do body fat analysis. It was height vs weight before. Now they pretend like their is more obese people to sell more weight loss products. It all a scam to sell products and make everybody look the same.
what's wrong with letting kids work in agriculture? i wished i had worked more during my summer breaks. agriculture is a great sector to learn life skills, too. why are you guys so against it?
You're wrong about this, but Newt Gingrich is wrong too. Am I not allowed to cut my neighbors yard because I'm only 15? Nobody is forcing me I just want to make some money for myself man. I understand that it's different if you are working full time on a farm, but if it's their choice they should be able to. Making kids be janitors at schools is stupid, but if they want to and they can get some community service hours for college or something great.
But they aren't kidding. Working on a farm is dangerous: Heavy machinery, poisons and pesticides, working in the hot sun all day. And this is before you get to the animals and the injuries they cause.
@WolfsStorm When I was a kid I enjoyed having money, you dick! Until I was 15 years old and able to get an actual job, working on a farm during the summer was the only way I could make any money as a kid!
@WolfsStorm My allowence was pretty worthless and I still had to do chores to earn it. My hostility is justified. I am sick of people who think they know what is best for others. I know what is in my own best interest and what is not! You should just mind your own business...
@phreak1983 Then you understand my point, Having a job is up to you and only you. What these people want to do is force you into a job no questions asked. Surely you can understand how that is bad, right? You had your job, and I didn't, everyone is happy.
@Wolf I don't know. I was tossed into the workforce at 13 and was perfectly capable of washing dishes, bussing dishes, bagging groceries. At 16 I was a union member. ONLY if these assholes would extend social security to kids starting at, say 12, then I approve of part time employment. 24 hours a week maximum. 12 years is plenty of time to enjoy being a kid, plus, what a great way to burn off all that Mountain Dew and chips. When you are very young and earning money it is good for the soul.
@mecher3k So you don't work, hate work or didn't join the workforce until after college? I worked asa kid while attending 8-12 at a competitive prep school and that makes me a retard? Does "build character" make any sense to you, Asshole. better than "good for the soul"? I had a great time working through high school. I also played drums in a band and partied. So what? You can do it all if you want, dick head.
You can take any fascist movement of the early part of last century, substitute the words "religious (specifically Catholic in most of their cases) right wing" and give a correct description of those movements.
Fascist governments were only harsh and restrictive in the laws they passed against PEOPLE, not business.
Which is an apt description of the right and left wing of America. Conservatives want big govt to regulate people, progressives only want govt to regulate corporations.
If people in this country were smart, then they would realize that the radicals are the ones who wish to overturn and reserve the over 150 year progressive movement to curtail and restrict the type of child labor that is dangerous and or interferes with the educational needs of children under the age of 16. Forget the platitudes about building "work ethic and building "character" in children, people would be wise to understand this is actually a ploy to institute a permanent underclass.
Farm accidents are viscous. farmers often work alone. and country farms are usually not close to hospitals.the bill is designed to stop children from dying. and the republican argument is... but your kids will get fat?
Why do they want to put kids to work when adult can't find jobs? The hell man? Jobs are hard enough to find as it is leave the kids alone. Being a kid sucks as it is. You have no power and you're to small to even fight about it.
@ShatterNWO kids are going to get forced into working, and most of them won't even get to see their money. That's not power. I admit some will get a great freeing chance with something like this, but most will just have harder lives when life is hard enough as it is.
This is one of the most obvious taken-out-of-context moments that I have ever seen in my life. You HAVE to do better than this guys if you want to keep your credibility.
So....in order to lose weight or just generally stay active my kids need to be slave laborers? What about rich kids? What's stopping them from working out? Their parents having too much bloody money?
This is just one more reason and proof that big government and bureaucracy doesn't work to the people's best interest, and one more reason why you should give the middle finger to the establishment by voting for Ron Paul.
It's not that kids shouldn't make money doing whatever it's that this ass clown Grassley wants to make more money off this.Does anyone really thing this fucko cares 2 shits about your kids working? It's just him being a greedy cocksucker as usual.
Hey, how about making so-called healthy/organic foods and meals cheaper than McDonalds? Repubs stop making excuses. I don't want my child to take my job!
I dunno, I don't see much of a problem working on a farm. But not with the heavy equipment and whatnot, not sure why they would let a little kid handle that anyway. Small tasks should be fine for a little bit of cash.
So I'll have to slightly disagree with TYT on this one. It depends what they have these kids doing. Harvesting things by hand for a few hours a day in good weather conditions VOLUNTARILY *meaning their parents aren't forcing them to do it* I think is in the OK.
Does anyone in here even know what jobs kids do on farms? Or is everyone just talking out of their ass? I'm willing to bet every person who is against kids working on farms, has never actually worked on a farm.
@KatoKid85 i know right, i grew up on my grandparents farm, and i worked 5-6 hours a day, and i didnt get a choice, it was something i was supposted to do. It wasnt like a drove heavy equipment.
Kid getting his hand ground off by a corn augur is something the corporate farms want the right to do as well. After all, corporations are people too.
What scares me is the further to the right the republicans go. The more likely the moron element in US society will come out and vote for them. Have you ever tried to reason with a moron? They just take the position further to the right than yours. The more ridiculous the better. Good luck USA you need it.
Republicans are looking for that loop-hole. Since these kids won't be old enough for most worker's rights laws and at the very least minimum-wage, they can essentially pay them shit, and treat them like shit. They want to take advantage of kids thinking $1 an hour is alot.
to be fair ... he wasn't literally advocating poor kids being sent off to tend other peoples' farms for peanuts
nonetheless, the base message he is purveying, fully intended or not, is a particularly horrible one, and he is clearly only spouting such nonsense cause its the 'in thing' to do right now
Grassley's "obesity" argument, name-checking FLOTUS, is ridiculous. But so is your comparison of farm labor to a sweat shop. Kids are "4x more likely to die" (etc.)... the same is true just LIVING on a farm. (If you live on a farm, you work on a farm.) In a small rural town, farm work is the bedrock of the economy, and it's common for adolescent kids to make a bit of money helping a neighbor bring in the harvest, detasseling corn, etc.. Prime example of a well-intentioned but STUPID regulation.
That senator is moronic, as is the idea of abolishing child labor laws. But at the same time, those kids working on farms aren't out there just because. They're working because they have to help provide food for their families because there is no other way. So, if we make it so they can't work on the farm, are we also going to give them additional aid?
why...why...WHY are you going backwards america??? and what the f*** does getting active and playing sports and eating right have to do with WORKING IN FIELDS ....why are these people so ass backwards crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
My only real issue with kids working on farms as a law is that it provides a reasonable place for children to be working compared to other potential jobs. Therefore, individuals who want to remove all child labor laws will say "well, if they can work on farms, then they can work in factories." It becomes a way to invoke the "slippery slope" to remove the laws. I have no problem with kids working on farms in a reasonable way, but we should maintain child labor laws that already exist.
I'm not for the make the poor kids work thing, but working on a farm as a kid can be safe and fun. But making it an excuse for losing weight is stupid. Kids are not fat because they don't work. Studying for a future should be their main job, it also teaches you about hard work. They are fat because they eat poorly and don't exercise.
@DirtbagEconomics: I am in no way an athlete...while you're slapping your face for no reason. I was merely offering a suggestion to keep kids more active, and less sedentary (Isn't that what the anti-obesity campaign is about?). Geez, they can ride bikes, work on their parents farm if that's their thing, have a small part time job, whatever. I am just saying that this particular societal concern needn't be mandated by frickin' legislation---there's an easy, at-home solution.
The problem isnt child labor, its that farmers cannot afford to pay $20 an hour for an adult to do the same job. The only solution is to increase the amount consumers pay for the products farmers produce. Most farmers live off government aid because they cant make a profit off what they grow in todays market. So if you dont want your kids working on farms, then you will have to suck it up and pay more for the food you eat every day.
Raising price on food might become very disastrous for food is the first foundation in the hierarchy of needs. I believe it would be better to invest in better harvesting technology and make it very affordable for farmers. That way, there's no excuse to repeal child labor laws, and food prices won't rise.
@NaziGOPBallmer I agree, raising to cost of food is not the answer. I was just trying to get my point across, that it is not the farmers fault for not being able to pay the wages we want them to pay.
@NaziGOPBallmer Well, if it is a corporate kingdom military, this is incorporated... Therefore, for profit and not for some principle of hereditary privileges and greatness of the kingdom. There are too many effort to put for a feudalist state with the level of technology to be "workable", oh and a too large population as well (300 million).
Well, I wouldn't be surprise that we see such feudal trend happening right now. It almost teeters to a fictional story I once wrote up a long time ago where future societies have corporations exist in the form of arcological kingdoms. CEOs become like king, low wage workers become like peasants, and security firms, and guards become the military that fight for the corporate kingdoms. Hehe, far-fetched I know. But that's what they said about the movie "3 Days of the Condor".
I love how most comments on here come from people that have never set one foot on a farm, and yet they pass judgment on a topic they know nothing about.
@GodAthie The problem is, they do it on farms that don't belong to their caregivers. That means they're working, most likely without proper minimum wage, doing hard labour without their own consent most of the time.
@withthebirdillshare kids who want to do it on their own consent because they want to earn some cash are barred from legally being able to do so. what study do you have to back up that they aren't doing it without their own consent? any source?
The government is turning our children into spoiled brats who dont know the meaning of a hard days work, and the worth of a dollar. You cant understand the value of a dollar by reading about in a book. I say get em out their working and pay them a fair wage. Besides, most kids work on farms in the summer, when they dont have school.
@Kyanlikethepepper Believe whatever you want but, I am speaking from real experience while you are out there casting judgment on a topic you know nothing about.
@KatoKid85 i am speaking from real experience. i grew up in a farm town, and though i did water pressure cleaning on dairies, most of my peers did NOT work the farms. sorry that reality is different from your delusional experiences.
The government isn't doing shit. They're ineffective. Did you forget that our government is bought by corporations? You know, the very scumbags that Newt looks out after. I understand about your concern about spoiled brats. Perhaps you should lecture that to rich kids to do the same shitty work that Newt wants poor kids to do.
You people make me sick. Grassley is absolutely right. Allowing children to work on farms is a great way for them to lose weight. Do you have any idea how much an arm or a leg weighs?
Not as sick as you when you become ignorant of the facts. But I guess you probably won't give a fuck if kids die in the process, as long as they get a workout, right? You can pretend that Grassely gives a fuck about people like you, or me, or anyone else, but he doesn't, he'd rather suck rich donors' dicks for a living.
@NaziGOPBallmer Okay, so you are apparently unable to tell when someone is being sarcastic. I said: "Allowing children to work on farms is a great way for them to lose weight. Do you have any idea how much an arm or a leg weighs?"
Get it....the child loses weight when they lose a limb. See?
Just my opinion..but the mentality I previously mentions are the same ones supporting "the newt" they have run this country long enough! RON PAUL 2012
Cenk... do NOT always talk about "cleaning TOILETS! OMG!"
Being a janitor is more than just cleaning toilets (if they do that at all...).
I am against child labor, but you sound like a dumb republican rightwinger when you misquote your opponents like that.
Don´t sink to their level please.

My experience in the oilfield has shown me there is nobody more dangerous to work around than a farmer who learned bad habits on the family farm.

There are jobs children should not do on a farm but some jobs can be done safely and the kids learn about money, work ethic and where food comes from.
spacedude61 1 month ago
@spacedude61 1. Pussy has no place in this argument. 2. Kids should be going to school not focusing on a job that could be given to an adult. 3. America fought for these very same labor laws that you're for some reason against. Children working and not being able to enjoy their childhood, not to mention working for less wages, is never a good thing. Many children learn about money and work ethic without having to work on a farm. Your argument is invalid.
smartguy1125 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@spacedude61 It is not about that.

KatoKid85 1 month ago
@KatoKid85
Raising price on food might become very disastrous for food is the first foundation in the hierarchy of needs. whats wrong with 14 year olds doing farm work? I did it when i was FN 10

@GodAthie The problem is, they do it on farms that don't belong to their caregivers. That means they're working, most likely without proper minimum wage, doing hard labour without their own consent most of the time.

@withthebirdillshare kids who want to do it on their own consent because they want to earn some cash are barred from legally being able to do so. what study do you have to back up that they aren't doing it without their own consent? any source?

@GodAthie send your kids to the farms if you like. i can think of better places to send mine.

If you support this, then you also support illegal aliens, because that is who our kids will be replaced by.

The government is turning our children into spoiled brats who dont know the meaning of a hard days work, and the worth of a dollar. You cant understand the value of a dollar by reading about in a book. I say get em out their working and pay them a fair wage. Besides, most kids work on farms in the summer, when they dont have school.

@KatoKid85 haha most kids? sure! i believe that.

@Kyanlikethepepper When did I say everyone from a farm community works on a farm?

@KatoKid85

@NaziGOPBallmer I would love the opportunity to watch a bunch of spoiled rich kids pull their weight on a farm.

@KatoKid85
Then that's the message to send to Newt. But I wouldn't be surprise if he suddenly back-pedals, just watch LOL.

You people make me sick. Grassley is absolutely right. Allowing children to work on farms is a great way for them to lose weight. Do you have any idea how much an arm or a leg weighs?
MrJmm999 1 month ago
@MrJmm999

See?
MrJmm999 1 month ago
@MrJmm999 Dont worry, I got it. I've found most of my sarcasm is wasted on YouTube as well. ;)

I started detasseling corn on farms when I was 14 in southern Minnesota. If 14 year olds cant do it, then illegal imigrants will.
