Read all about it in the bigger, better, sexier 2012 edition of the book, SECRETS OF THE OLYMPIC CEREMONIES by Myles Garcia, now out and available on amazon. It spills all the secrets on how these shows (from Berlin 1936 to Vancouver 2010) are put together. With over 150 photos and images, many of them never before published. Check out the website—secretolympiceremony
it was funny how this olypic opening ceromony was on my birthday because i was born on 15/9/1987 and this was on 15/9/2000 i had the whole australia giving me a great birthday pressie lol
This is a stunning show! The show flows smoothly from one part to the next, something I felt Beijing and other ceremonies missed. And you can definitely see portions of this in what Atkins created in 2010 in Vancouver. I personally felt he achieved greater success in Vancouver, but none of his other spectacles can compare with the sheer size of the 2000 Opening Ceremonies.
@coasterdork26 I don't know but Beijing lacked the soul and authenticity that Sydney Olympics had. Bejing was visually impressive but it was all too mechanical for my liking. I didn't like how their government 'forced' them to act and behave a certain way instead of them enjoying it with the Olympic spirit. It really kind of turned me off & it stopped me from really enjoying the games tbh.
I remember the IOC president saying this was the best Olympics ever. Didn't hear him say that in Beijing.
This ceremony is particularly special to me since it was held on my 6th Birthday. I wish I was old enough to watch it but thankfully I found it (well most of it) 11 years later! Thank you so much! This means a lot to me!
Thank you so much for uploading this, thank you so much! It has such a sentimental value behind this.. it marked a big and important part of my life. Seeing this when I was 18... I was sure then I needed to visit Australia someday :)
i think this is a great display of Australian Pride and I love it but nothing annoys me more than miming for the sake a perfection! Julie Anthony can sing that good live... Why not let her?
I was amazed by his work, too and I don't even live in the land down under, but this ceremony taught me more about Australia than I ever learned in world geography class. By the way, do you Aussies place your right hand over your heart during "Advance Australia Fair?"
@HTownCountryFan No, the only two nations that do/did that are the US and the Romans. Sometimes, though rare people do put their hand on heart, but it looks odd and unnecessary
@Pedroetbdf The opening ceremony will be in rio de janeiro probably designed by scott griven. He has been the opening ceremony in Salt Lake City designed. Scott and his team have rio also advise during the application process for Olympic Games I'm looking forward to the first show, the academy award winner Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry design in London
@ilfiumi The Olympic Charter specifies that opening ceremonies are to be in the official languages of the Olympics, French and English, and the national language of the host city. In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the ceremonies were in French, English, Spanish, and Catalán. The next time we'll probably hear Spanish in the opening ceremonies will be if Madrid gets to host the Olympics.
Sydney Olympic scored with this spectacular ceremony and David Atkins reached achieving greater pedigree in your resume. Each segment of the opening ceremony was superbly to music with beautiful staging and costumes rather spectacular and not to mention the lighting of the cauldron that originality and beauty!. My rating: 9.5 / 10.
Hopefully all the parts of the ceremony would have gone in 1080 or 720p. A show worth seeing.
Olympics of 2000 in Sydney and 2008 in Beijing had the most magnificent opening ceremonies ever in the history of this games the 2004 in Athens was somehow disappointing.
@international153 no I'm not. I'm just a fan of this fantastic artistic director and producer, for the Opening and Closing Ceremony Sydney 2000, Doha 2006 and Vancouver 2010 was responsible. I'm looking forward to september. David then shows another impressive show at the opening ceremony of rugby world cup in new zealand.
from barcelona, atlanta, sydney, athens and bejing... i can say that every olympic opening ceremonies bring tears to my eyes because, even just for a few hours i can see that different nations of the world unite with smile on their faces...
LOLOLOLOLOL 8:45 guy doesnt know his own national anthem.. cant blame him though im aussie too lol couldnt sing the second verse if my life depended on it LOL
I am going to post this on facebook. People should revisit this. It was truly amazing. I love being from Sydney :) Also, do you know where I can find a copy of the whole ceremony?
with his company DAE is David now represented on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. The next grand opening ceremony in New Zealand at Rugby World Cup in September.
