Honestly... book another hotel, unless you like being accosted by bums (a homeless shelter is a stones throw away) and being offered crack or sex right outside. Otherwise, if you mind your business and stay on the main drags (stay out of alleys), you will be fine. Downtown Minneapolis has its problems just like any other downtown urban environment. Luckily, the downtown has a very strong visible police/security presence that helps keeps the thugs moving along.

The main issue of that avenue between Hennepin and Nicollet is the fact that none of the store fronts along 7th street are unobstructed. Visibility ordinances are still not observed and if they were there would be less places for thugs to hide from watchful eyes.

It's hard to tell what really got things rolling, but I've been to Minn. to see the "Mary" tour spots and loved it. I live in metro Detroit and would NOT venture anywhere on foot in Detroit after dark. I will walk anywhere in downtown chicago after dark, except the south side. I have never had any issues with people in the city during the day. Too bad it's right in front of the MTM statue. Minn. is a great place to visit!
