when I was a kid I was at one of the last of these races in phoenix az it was one of the best races i remember i wish they would bring back this kind of raceing
The first race was done to be part of Smokey and the Bandit, it went over so well GATR was started and they did well till some nascar drivers blamed all the track issues on the trucks.
It was a pity they could not get a tire changed in a hurry, it was a guarantee to lose a lap in the pits under the yellow that would come out because of the masses of rubber on the track.
No they have not either cat's first truck engine was in the mid 60's and the first truck was in the late 20's so no they were not really back in 1980 cat only had 5 truck engines out. cat's name wasn't much until the 1693 and 3406 came out.
@pete359l I agree. The majority of the trucks I see from the 60's/70's era and mostly 80's were Detroit or Cummins. There are quite a few trucks form the 80's that had CAT's.

That's cool that they are talking with the director of both smokey and bandit movies hal needham. He is introduced in the beginning.

They oughta run some of these races again at the speedway. They'd be more entertaining than watching the sprint cup boys run.
