The lyrics to this acted as a reflection of the success of the previous album, True Colours, and their record label's pressure in following it up with something similar - Split Enz of course were a band who constantly changed their overall sound for each album, and preferred to do things without outside interference. They were incredibly productive in their later years, releasing a new album each year from 1979 to 1984...
that would be Neil Finn, new to the band and brother of the singer Tim Finn. i am still amazed by Neil's talent, after he went on to start Crowded House. both Finn brothers are extremely talented, and i love their music!
ramadarose41: The Finn Brothers certainly exhibit their talent in this live performance. Exceptional would be putting it mildly. In fact, the entire band is great. We saw very little of Split Enz during their heyday, and I think we were cheated from enjoying such talent.
This band deserved more accolades than what they received. They're more talented than some of the "artists" being shoved down our throats today, no doubt about it.
maybe i just wasn't cool enough to know about Split Enz, but the only song I remember hearing here in the States was "I Get Frightened". Then they became Crowded House. And it has only been in the last 5 years or so that I've gotten to know most of the music both bands created... and I'm 41, an 80s teen. were they not as popular in the States? did they not get enough airplay? i agree with you terrafirma91 that Split Enz, and even Crowded House, didn't get the attention they deserved!
I caught on thanks to fairly heavy MTV rotation, especially of "One Step Ahead" and "History Never Repeats" (both from same album as "Hard Act To Follow"--an instant classic at track 1). The Enz were both frustratingly underappreciated and gratifyingly everything else. The first band I ever cared about that wasn't the Beatles. Still one of the best. I'm just now hearing The Rootin Tootin Luton Tapes and feeling like they never went away!
FANTASTIC performance, blistering guitar from Neil and look at Noel,( I think?) beating up the drums and of course Tim and his echo, echo. BRILLIANT!, Thanks for sharing.

Great to see this: same costumes and back-drop as in their Rotterdam gig in De Doelen, June 13th, 1981). Only ever concert of the Enz I could attend.

I think this performance would be a hard act to follow for any band that played directly after them.

dannok74: Listen to the rhythm the guitarist punches out from 0:22 to about 0:49. These guys were light years ahead of their time.

Check out the stage movements of the guitarist between 2:16, and 2:28. Brilliant!!!

Awesome. I don't know how he could keep it going.

simfaithguitar1: The lead singer is heads above most, too. Few groups I see today have a fraction of talent as this band shows here.

@Hockgrain I recall "History Never Repeats" and "One Step Ahead" both appeared in MTV's playlist on their first day in 1981...

@ramadarose41 The song you are referring to is "I got you", which reached the UK Top 10 in 1980...

Dont get better than this...I think Tim was not going well at this time. Think he had a breakdown around this era of the Enz.
