I think its a bit ironic that people are saying how unfair and cowardly it was for the English to ambush the vikings, since viking tactics usually involved surprise attacks on villages and monasteries and attacking unarmed peasants and priests and leaving before the local militia or the nobility's armies could engage them. The English made a wise tactical decision and won the battle because of it, there is nothing wrong or cowardly about it.

@olealg88 Im also pretty sure he had a shield, and the axe the actor is using is nothing like the "gyrd" (long axe) the vikings used. Those axes were much longer and had a smaller "head", so it could be wheedled faster. The Icelandic and Danish actors in this drama/documentary does not represent vikings very well. The sagas say that the norseman was close to 2 meters tall, and he held the bridge for 1-2 hours, killing about 40 men.

Middle Earth or- in Old Norse- "Miðgarðr" is the name for our world, the place inhabited by humans. In Danish, which is related to Old Norse, we call it "Midgård" which is not so far from the original word in Old Norse.

What I meant was that the concept of Middle Earth didn't originate in the Anglo-Saxon legends, but in the German and Scandinavian mythologies as a whole. The Saxons and Angles were only some of the tribes that existed in the area at the time. And the mythololgies existed even before the Anglo-Saxon tribes. They date back before Caesar etc
