  • Nice version, it is to go from a dirge to swing and can be played with whatever instruments your orchestra has. It need to be mean like the city it's named after. The clarinet actually captures the feel the best. Very nice approximation of a great jump tune. Now go attack it boys - get the folks to jump back - it's alive.

  • Very good rendition

  • I would say that it needs a longer Bari solo, since the first and original recording by Duke, this song had a trumpet feature intro, but the rest of the song was a Bari feature.

  • If you want to hear a great version of this tune, search youtube for 'East St Louis Toodle Oo - Portena Jazz Band 1972'. I would say the Portena Jazz Band would have these guys beat.

  • great performance, maybe.

great version, no. unless you define great as exact imitation. this is one of the best renditions i've seen. band isn't afraid to play around with the melody

  • It's pretty darn good, though I would have expected the pace to be a little more upbeat due to the features of the genre. Still, very good.

  • Are you kidding? Have you heard Ellington do this song?

  • you fool!

  • it would have been cool to hear some of the original solos transcribed and the trumpet with a pixie and plunger...but pretty cool

  • wow wow wow. great stuff dudes!!!
