They did this by throwing the last 20+ games of the season by healthy scratching their best players and bringing kids up from the minors who had no business getting a roster spot in the NHL. I understand why they did it, but it doesn't make it right.
They also did it for the simple fact that they didn't want to be forgotten, since the Pens were shitsville compared to the Steelers and Pirates of that year. When you have to look at not one, but two totally different sports to be your savior, you have officially reached embarrassmentville. I will never deny Pittsburgh supports the Steelers, but unless the Pirates or Pens are doing well, that fan base stays away.

I went to the Pens Flyers game in Philly on Dec 27th and it wasn't even close to full. Maybe a thousand empty seats or so. The Penguins! got all the way to the cup finals and won the eastern conference championship last year. I'm in my 2nd year as a penguins fan, but don't let that let you down. I have NEVER, EVER been a fan of any other hockey team before the penguins. I live a very long 430 miles from the mellon in western Michigan. I plan on seeing my first hockey game at the mellon arena before the pens leave the mellon for their new arena after Apr. 2010.

Last but certainly not least, the 1984 draft. I did mention "shameless" before right? Well here is another Pens shameless moment. The Pens made it very clear to everyone that they wanted and needed to draft Lemieux to stay alive. They did this by throwing the last 20+ games of the season by healthy scratching their best players and bringing kids up from the minors who had no business getting a roster spot in the NHL. I understand why they did it, but it doesn't make it right.

I went to the Pens Flyers game in Philly on Dec 27th and it wasn't even close to full. Maybe a thousand empty seats or so. I went to a game in Dec and it was announced a sell-out but there were easily 2000 or 3000 empty seats. Do you even watch your team play? Obviously not. The pens fans were there until things got real bad. We had 90% attendance the first year we finished last. By the 3rd it got bad. Nobody would have fans there then.

Those ESPN attendance records are based on NUMBER of tickets sold. With all sold-out games last season, Pittsburgh still ranked only 19th. But in PERCENTAGES the Pens outsold the Flyers. Comparing a 17,000 seat arena to a 19,000 arena is comparing apples to oranges.
If you go to 2004, it shows Pittsburgh as last in NUMBERS, but if you do the percentages they are not last in attendance % figuring-in our smaller capacity.

Dude....we've been playing hockey in Pittsburgh since the 1890s. Pittsburgh had an NHL team in 1925. The AHL Hornets won multiple Calder Cups (and one in 1966 then year they became the Penguins).
Lack of ticket sales was NEVER the reason for any discussions about moving the team.

More things: Flyers suck, my dad is 50, he was 16 the last time the flyers won the stanley cup. Pittsburgh is a much more friendly and welcoming city while Philly is very dangerous and has a high crime rate.
I will ALWAYS love the pens. did I mention that Jordan Staal and I are only 10 months apart in age. The flyers got this season off to a suck-ass start. The penguins have ALWAYS been higher in this years standings than Philadelphia, too. We're the best!

jrdkck is right. Pittsburgh is much more friendly city. I love their sports, well not the Pirates, since they're not that great like the Roberto Clemente days. Pittsburgh is the home and heart of Steeler Nation as well. In Philthy, it doesn't only have a higher crime rate, and being dangerous, but it is also the filthiest city out there.

The Penguins! got all the way to the cup finals and won the eastern conference championship last year. I'm in my 2nd year as a penguins fan, but don't let that let you down. I have NEVER, EVER been a fan of any other hockey team before the penguins. I live a very long 430 miles from the mellon in western Michigan. I plan on seeing my first hockey game at the mellon arena before the pens leave the mellon for their new arena after Apr. 2010.

When the Penguins were atrocious the fans vacated. When they got Crosby, they all came back.
Philly came in dead last a couple of years ago and they still ranked 4th in attendance. The question has nothing to do with championships, the guy asked who was a better sports town, not who has won more championships.
Pittsburgh is like Buffalo, a has-been city that died after the steel mills closed.

Judging by last year the steelers had a better record than the Eagle and we made the playoffs. The penguins won the conferance, had sellouts all year, and we had one of the best power plays. the phillies are better though

ok since pit only holds 17,000 and philly holds 19,000 i will subtract 2,000. philyy in 06/07 had an average of 19,282 and last year it was 19,556. and pit 06/07 was 16,424 and last year it was 17,076. if u look the year that we were bad if u subtract it is 17,282 and last year the year the pens went to the finals theres is 17060. so we had more fan the year we were bad then u did when u went to the finals. so there is the proof. and we do have more passion. so we top you girls. hah
