The guy was not being mean. He was trying to get the cat out of the tree so he wouldn't die. How is that cruel? It is a lot easier to do nothing, like most people would have done.

Rescue? Hardly. I'm surprised the cat is alive. The "rescuer" should be ashamed; clearly there was no concern about the cat's welfare, just frustration (anger?) that the cat got stuck and wouldn't come down.
in the context of what was happening around the cat, this was most certainly a rescue. first, even though it is difficult to see in the video, the apartment fire was very close to the cat/tree. second, the fire department was about to shoot high pressure water very close to where the cat was to combat the fire. in all likelihood, the cat would've died if they hadn't shaken it from the tree.

Cats can handle it.. I saw a fireman throw a cat off a two storey roof and it just walked away like nothing had happened.
