These are the only Bees that I have no issue with. They check you out briefly and then move on their way. There is a hole below the doorbell of my building where an old doorbell was mounted. Some carpenter bees decided to bore it out some more and make a nest last year. We had to get within a foot of the nest every day to get in the door and they never bothered us. So we just let them be.
I've lived in the same place for 15 years & up until the last 2 weeks I believed carpenter bees were harmless. Then a bunch of them moved into an old couch I haven't taken to the dump yet. If you get within 5 ft of their home, they come after you. I've been attacked 2X in the past week, stung 2X -1st attack, 3X-2nd attack. The sting is awful, leaving a nice big hole in you not to mention the swelling that lasts for 3 days.

I didn't know carpenter bees were black. They look threatening though, good to know they're virtually harmless=)
