i've seen the movie more than 20 times... and i've cried more than 20 times at the same 2 scenes... the moment Katsumoto orders Capt. Algren to let him regain his honour by dying on a batttlefield as his anscestors did and when Capt. alrgen said he would glady take his life if needed by the emperor of japan
@elyosjan1 Agreed COMPLETELY. The look Matsumoto gives as he watches the cherry blossoms, "Their all perfect". And when Cpt Algren gets on his knees, and you can see the pain lance through his body, and he holds the sword in front of the Emperor. Theres a raw emotion behind it. Something that strikes a pillar in the human soul, almost like a yearning to be that clear of mind.
I think some people realize how brainwashed the samurai were. Yes they were great warriors and understood the art of war, but they were pawns and puppets of there lords. The samurais life was not his own but that of his master. If he was disgraceful he had to commit suicide. The ronin were the ones who honed there skills to better themselves as swords man and of course get money, without pledging there life to a master. Think of miyamoto mushashi.
@kiball09 Well, it's kinda harsh to talk about brainwash, it was the thinking of their time. Every feudalistic society is based on ideas and on structures wich would seem barbaric to us, but that is simply ignorance (not meant as an offence to you) Of course the samurai were a tool for their shogun/clan leader, but please tell me how the medieval knights/prussian army during the age of napoleon/ insert random army in the long and bloody history of our world was different ?
@T6m6u6 i dont know about THE best movie ever made..it does have its flaws when you look at things from a historical point of view BUT i agree it is one of the best
i respect the japanese for their close fighting, will to survive, never surrender but in ww2 they were bastards! they raped, buried the chiense alive, looted, murdered, beheaded every one! but i think there is still good in them.
This is hands down, my favorite theme from the album and it's also one of the tracks which I play each night before heading to sleep. Zimmer; what can be said about the man that others haven't?
He emotionally captures a scene and brings it to life through the representation of sound. Without a word being whispered by an actor or actress, he sets the tone for the viewer and that's why he ranks as one of the best composers.
I'm really looking forward to what he has in store for the new Batman
@BayKaramela This cannot be done, and I wonder if you would really want it. Death and misery was much more abundant back then. All we can do is learn from the past and improve ourselves as persons in the present.
@BayKaramela you can't. but if you want to get closer to those times in this movie, seek out the japanese budo arts. Kenjutsu, Jujutsu, Iaido. Zen. The tea Ceremony. Hakamas and tatamis. These things are all still very much alive, they just appear differently cuz it's 2011. ;)

I listen to this song every day and when I do, I cry. It's beautiful and so touching. It makes me cry tears of guilt when I realize I am so lucky. Why am I complaining when I have so much? I realize the people who don't have much cherish what they have. Why don't we? Beautiful song my Hans Zimmer, an awesome composer from OUR generation.
People who come onto a youtube video listening to the soundtrack of a movie that he calls people "nerds" for watching, without realizing he is here too so that must make him a nerd, really pisses me off. BULLETSMCJESUS!!!!!

@BulletsmcJesus Excuse us, I know you are Generalizing about "Nerds" posting things about Honor, but there are some people, (Like me) that try to live with Honor and follow the path of Honor. And if you like the soundtrack but don't like the comments, don't read them, thus, nobody fights :)
“In fighting and in everyday life you should be determined though calm. Meet the situation without tenseness yet not recklessly, your spirit settled yet unbiased. An elevated spirit is weak and a low spirit is weak. Do not let the enemy see your spirit.” Miyamoto Musashi
Just saying good people come in all Nationality I get tired of people talk about a group of people they never personally dealt with or a country they never been too.
Speaking on the subject of French, people in America talk about French people mostly the one's who are ignorant and never got to really know another person from another country. I know of an elder French couple who live in America that live well you can say they are so gracious they have an American who is a middle-age drunkard living in a room off to the side (a converted room from a separated garage) who is not even related. How many Kind-hearted Americans do you come across like that.
Very beautiful and touching. Hans Zimmer is amazing, he is the best at making movies sound 10 times better than they really are. Without his music all the great movies you know (The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, Prince of Egypt) would sound very different. All his songs have meaning. It reminds me of all my sins and how lucky all of us really are when in other countries, the poor cherish what they have. It is beautiful.
Yea So Honor was pretty much thrown out the window for Samurai during Heian and Sengoku Era. Samurai could give less of a damn about anything during that time. @ObliviousBurrito You are exactly right, what was said and done in real life was different from the romanticize of popular films from the Japanese culture. Samurai were tax collector from warlords in ancient time, warriors fought as individual & not as troops-in-formation, dealing with the Emishi people of the north they were introduce to guerilla warfare tactics. During the Sengoku Period Japanese incorporated mass formation-of-troops. Honor didn't exist until a time of peace.
limited the domain of roaming Samurai. He even went to war with because he became so Proud that he was able to conquer Japan. It cost him dearly. It cost him his recourse's,his men,his pride, his honor, and his life, and it even lost him his control of Japan because Tokugawa Ieyasu was at home waiting for his chance to overthrow the Toyotomi reign. As I'm saying a lot of Samurai and Samurai rulers aren't as honorable or right as you would believe.
Hey about war and corruption, The Samurai weren't so great either. Yes there is no doubt they are honorable that much for the most part, but many Samurai had they're flaws too. For Example Oda Nobunaga ruthless, apathetic, cold. He slew anyone who would get in his way, he burned farming lands down and killed peasants who would protest, and killed his way to control over half of Japan. Then came the Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi who pursued Missionaries, confiscated farmer's weapons, and (continued)
because the people wants the power , power creates war, and war and wars bring destruction but people seems to be blinded by the power
haha yes we can say that we are running in the wrong direction and this is awfully sad but it is never too late to go back would be nice if the people could think like this (the people who is not thinking like this ;P )
Mmmm... So peaceful.. This one is my favourite.. it's ironic that America was the country that introduced Japan to the world but they stabbed them in the back in WW2..

dont ask why , but one of my favourite scenes in the movie is when he is recovering from his battle wounds and in his sleep he is screaming for a beverage of sake.i dont find it funny or anything but it shows you that he is truly ... haunted by his past
such a powerfull movie. well done tom cruise , ken watanabe , hans zimmer and everyone else who helped in this masterpiece <3
just saw the movie for the first time yesterday very intense and impressive movie very emotional also i agree i had tears in my eyes in the end also with the part you said and the last fight when all the samurais and horses are shot down by machine guns that really put tears in my eyes very honorable people those samurais
opens the heart...mind...soul and stays open so long as u let it. this is my first youtube comment... be gentle. thank you for sharing this... masterpiece
I already hear this song every day and can say that hans zimmer have done a good job. Thats one of my favorite songs from Last Samurai and thats the first song that I hear when i meditate !!!
Hans Zimmer did a wonderful job with the music in Last Samurai. He deserves to be mentioned amongst the great movie composers like Randy Edelman and John Williams.
... no... he asked Katsumoto who the woman caring for him was(Taka) and who the man in the red armor was, and he told him that he was her husband... that was before he saw the red armor...
I would love to hear more songs like this from Hans Zimmer. :D
hearing this song..finally made me realise my mistakes, and showed me how i should learn from them. this song really opened my eyes, thanks for uploading it =)
I don't think honor has anything to do with countries, it's to do with each individual person.
People probably wouldn't call bush honorable for what he did but that doesn't mean the american public aren't honorable. Same goes for the british, the japanese, even the french, just because france surrendered to germany in WW2 does not mean the entire french population wanted to.
Honor is something todays governments can't understand despite what they say.
i've seen the movie more than 20 times... and i've cried more than 20 times at the same 2 scenes... the moment Katsumoto orders Capt. Algren to let him regain his honour by dying on a batttlefield as his anscestors did and when Capt. alrgen said he would glady take his life if needed by the emperor of japan
certainly one of my top 3 movies

dont ask why , but one of my favourite scenes in the movie is when he is recovering from his battle wounds and in his sleep he is screaming for a beverage of sake.i dont find it funny or anything but it shows you that he is truly ... haunted by his past
such a powerfull movie. well done tom cruise , ken watanabe , hans zimmer and everyone else who helped in this masterpiece <3

I think your comment is the best that can be said about honour. I agree with you completely.
