The CORRECT definition of a hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle NOT the longest side. It is true it will be the longest side, however it is not the definition. Further, in his example we do not know which side is longest because he only gives 2 sides. Yes, the picture looks like C is the longest side but you cannot go by the scale of the pic. Therefore, the right angle SHOULD have a little box in it showing it is right and then you can say side C is the hypotenuse.

Therefore, they define the same object, and so we can use either of them without being wrong.

Look at the last digit of it to help you. If it is a perfect square then do this. If the last digit is 9, then the last digit of the square root is either 3 or 7. If last digit of the number is 6, then the square root last digit is either 4 or 6. If the last digit of the number is 5, then last digit square root is 5. If last digit of number is 4, then last digit of square root is 2 or 8. If the last digit of number is 1, then the last digit of square root is 1 or 9. Hope this helps you a little
