The CORRECT definition of a hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle NOT the longest side. It is true it will be the longest side, however it is not the definition. Further, in his example we do not know which side is longest because he only gives 2 sides. Yes, the picture looks like C is the longest side but you cannot go by the scale of the pic. Therefore, the right angle SHOULD have a little box in it showing it is right and then you can say side C is the hypotenuse.
@ozziebentleybaer You must be really bored to nitpick a tongue-in-cheek video like this as if it were the Constitution... Come over the the Dark Side, and together we can rule the Galaxy.
actually you are wrong. the definition of the hypotenuse is not "the longest side of a right triangle" but "the side opposite the right angle in a right triangle"
@ShadowOpz61 The hypotenuse is always the longest side, actually. But yes. 'technically' the definition is the side opposite the right angle in a right triangle
@ShadowOpz61 In mathematics we can give more than one definition for the same object, as long as they are EQUIVALENT. I mean, if we say the definition is "the longest side of a right triangle", then we can formally prove that it is indeed "the side opposite to the right angle of the right triangle"; if we say the definition is the opposite angle one, then we can prove that it will be the longest side. Therefore, they define the same object, and so we can use either of them without being wrong.
@ShadowOpz61 Actually, hypotenuse will necessarily be the longest, so it is not wrong to say that hypotenuse is the longest side. That statement does not imply calling all longest sides hypotenuses?
omg i had no idea how to do this and i spent hours looking on websites for it and i stumbled apon this. thank you so much. i am thumbbing up and subscribing. thx again
and someone actually explained this in a coherent, understandable way. i finally got it. math must be the toughest of all the subjects to teach. it's a rough sell i bet

a2+b2=c2 find the area of the of the given measurments, and square then (s2) ex. 5 squared (5x5)= given side 25cm2 so find the area of the other given measurement, and add up the total, then find the square root of it and theres ur answer lol in case ur wonderin im in 7th grade :) hope i helped you people having trouble
Haha this helped me sooo much. The only issue is that I still stink at finding square roots. Can Lord Vader please help me perhaps? I would even join the Dark side, whether or not they have cookies...
Look at the last digit of it to help you. If it is a perfect square then do this. If the last digit is 9, then the last digit of the square root is either 3 or 7. If last digit of the number is 6, then the square root last digit is either 4 or 6. If the last digit of the number is 5, then last digit square root is 5. If last digit of number is 4, then last digit of square root is 2 or 8. If the last digit of number is 1, then the last digit of square root is 1 or 9. Hope this helps you a little
