I studied in a think tank with Friedman as the head in 91'. Chomsky is a complete moron. He is using the perfect market (which he does not understand how it works) of farming, which is asinine to describe economic prosperity.
I don't think Chomsky made any case against free market and Friedman's economics. If anything he gives example after example of the contrary economic policy being practiced.
Bad people do bad things. While an idea can empower a man, it is ultimately he who bears the responsibility of his actions. In the end its an individual who does the bad and not the idea. Friedman cannot be blamed for the misdoings by American politicians in Latin America.
Indeed the two men talk on two different levels, and perhaps, should not even be compared; as MF talks fundamentally about doing business, socialism vs capitalism, and NC talks more broadly about US foreign policy.
The problem with what Chomsky is saying qua Friedman is that it is just plain false that governments have been following Friedman's ideas to the letter. Chomsky spends most of his time showing this. Therefore the injustice that Chomsky describes is not the effect of Friedmanesque policies. Therefore what Chomsky says is not a complete argument against Friedman who is against the government interventions Chomsky describes. ........
the solution, Mr. Chomsky, would be to remove government agricultural subsidies, and to enforce anti-dumping laws. This only proves that America is not truly capitalistic.
i would also point out to you that chomsky is completely aware of all the facts that you've pointed out, as am i. however, what he means is that elites use the label of "free market" or "capitalism" for these actions they undertake - which is obvious to everyone. if you want to see chomsky's talks on this theme look up "free market fantasies" lecture by chomsky on youtube
Removing subsidies can be one of the solutions. As it has been pinpointed by an official in Burkino Faso (see the documentary "Let's Make Money"), we, in the West, enforce liberalism elsewhere, while we're practicing protectionism.
But!
Not all food grosses should be exported/imported. Meat for instance, or vegetables or milk... Depending on the quality that ones wants for ones food.
The TRIPS (trade-related intellectual property rights) do allow pharmaceutical companies to engage in monopolist behavior, collecting monopoly rents; but only for designer drugs. One of the conditions was that they must allow smaller, international companies, to create generic versions of their drugs. In this sense, Chomsky is completely wrong.
Indian Farms collapsed due to America's anti-economic liberal policies, namely massive agricultural dumping. The American government subsidizes the farmers, and makes up the difference in prices when American farmers export their products; allowing them to sell below marginal costs. China's economic system has major growth, but also an immense unemployment rate, due to the massive amount of central planning which still exists. The CCP also is guilty of horrific human right violations.
Just finished watching a bunch of Milton Friedman videos. The most striking difference between these two men is that Chomsky comes off as human and Friedman comes off like a stanic robot.
