From what I understand, the ego has great importance and is good as much as can be bad. The ego is there for defense, mainly. I do not fear death at a personal level, but at a level to be here to raise and protect my son. The ego in a positive way leads by example and can help ones self and others. The negative ego is fear based, angry, and feeds on domination mainly through fear. This also leads to the ego and ones consciousness polarized to the side of the shadow self.

The Tree of Life does have some pretty substantial roots in metaphysical reality that predates religion, personally I wouldn't be too suspect of it. I hear you, we are beyond form, however this is the map to the first form(s).
