Def Leppard is Joe Elliotts band now, and before the band was Savs and Willis' Joe had Willis kicked out, and when Steve Clark died, and so did DL. Joe was and always been a doush, He has to remember what got him to the echelon of metal, it wasn't his voice, but the whole band. When Clark died, they should have gotten Willis back rather than go out and get Vivian Campbell. Now they have no lead guitar, no songwriting capabilities, and dead as far as new material.

You really have to respect Michaels for taking the high road. He could have bash Def Leppard, but he didn't. I have to agree with Joe partly though, there were not that many great bands in the 90's though. Sure there were some, but not many.
I love Def Leppard, but Joe Elliott himself has always been kind of arrogant. He once said that a lot of 80's band were "copying their sound", and while I agree that some 80's bands had a similar vibe, it wasn't exactly copying. If you look at the history of the band, Joe has a record for sticking his foot in his mouth. The other guys in Def Lep aren't as outspoken.

Listening to SWEET play Fox On The Run sends chills because of its highly melodic harmonies mixed with badass rock. No wonder most people worship the original bands. The best thing to do is forgive Elliott for his comment. It seems common for legendary bands to be angry at a lot of things today. The music industry pretty much shit on the greats when the 90s came, forever marking that decade a dark time. Also, I must say that for anyone to say Taylor Swift is "better" than Def Leppard clearly didn't grow up in the 80s. Most singers today can't touch his golden voice from the 80s. The songs are amazing not just for their time but are better than the shiyt out today.

The increased focus on cracking America alienated their British fans, true, and it took years for them to get past this and become as popular in Britain as they were in the States.

On the other hand, the fact is that amongst the 5 best rock bands in terms of having two 10 million+ albums in the States, the 4 come from the UK(Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and of course Def Leppard) and only Van Halen being american... But this doesn't rule out that both countries have produced some colossal rock bands over the years...

@bappichulo That was CMT Crossroads, Taylor was a huge def leppard fan all her life and said in an interview that if she was ever to do a crossroads show she'd like Def Leppard. She wasn't sure if they would actually say yes, but she reached out and they got a hold of her and they did it. The DVD is awesome they are really down to earth and respect each others stuff. This was just before Fearless released so this was also good marketing wise and to gain new fans.
One more thing - DL WAS the best. True, some of what Joe is saying is true but he's kind of an A-hole sometimes and that's why he didn't care that fans wanted to hear their harder old stuff in concert and not the soft rock band they turned into.

I love all three bands. :) I do agree with Joe, although I love L.A. Glam bands, they made too much of a fuss over their image. honestly , this isn't a knock on the crue but there were a lot of bands at the time that couldn't touch Lep musically speaking. Crue was one of theose bands, Lep had a shitload of talent , i think that was what joe was saying , look at crues , poison and some of the others first couple of albums. They all got mature later and got better , but the first few albums really were not as good as the latter ones for them. Lep had talent from the first album on..
I love these two bands and I hated this fued! Thank God they could put this aside and were able to tour with each other and Cheap Trick this summer! I saw them on Saturday and they were amazing!! I love how Phil says "I did" after Joe says "I would have shaged him"

Just saw Def Leppard, Poison and Cheap Trick in concert in Atlanta on 8/15/09 and they all still have it, and unlike the American Idol concert that I went to in July (where everyone sat the whole dang show except for during Adam Lambert) these fans still know how to ROCK!

I like both bands, but have to back Poison in this debate. Poison doesn't have any qualms about what are. They're a cheesy 80s glam rock band and they know it. Their music didn't change the world, but it was good rockin' fun.
Def Lep is a bit more deluded. They never stuck to a style (they went from heavy metal to hard rock to rock to pop rock to pop) and haven't done anything decent in at least a decade. That, and Joe seems incapable of not bitching whenever he's interviewed.
to settle the whole lip syncing thing...joe had a really bad upper respiratory infection...i saw them live right before they did the show and he could barely talk and was obviously hurting...for the show his voice was completely gone, forcing them to have to fake the performance. And Joe did have a point, it was looks before music for most of the 80's band...originally including poison who could barely play their instruments on their debut album...it was the MTV effect.

I have seen Slipknot and Def Leppard live in concert twice each. Both bands at Download Festival UK and Sheffield Arena UK and i can say that Def Leppard were the better band. And i can't say i am a massive fan of Bullet For My Valentine on the contrary i like one maybe two songs i prefer a different taste in music probably similar if not the same bands as you such as Iron Maiden, Metallica ect, ect so i do actually know a fair deal about music my friend.

Def Leppard is Joe Elliotts band now, and before the band was Savs and Willis' Joe had Willis kicked out, and when Steve Clark died, and so did DL. Joe was and always been a doush, He has to remember what got him to the echelon of metal, it wasn't his voice, but the whole band. When Clark died, they should have gotten Willis back rather than go out and get Vivian Campbell. Now they have no lead guitar, no songwriting capabilities, and dead as far as new material.

I love Def Leppard, but Joe Elliott himself has always been kind of arrogant. He once said that a lot of 80's band were "copying their sound", and while I agree that some 80's bands had a similar vibe, it wasn't exactly copying. If you look at the history of the band, Joe has a record for sticking his foot in his mouth. The other guys in Def Lep aren't as outspoken.

I'll also add that Def Leppard is influenced by all the bands I loved back then. Queen will always be number 1. Listening to SWEET play Fox On The Run sends chills because of its highly melodic harmonies mixed with badass rock. No wonder most people worship the original bands. Today's bands really suck a big dick. A bunch of posers have infiltrated the industry because marketing and profit have become the big priority over love of music. And kids today don't know any better.

The best thing to do is forgive Elliott for his comment. It seems common for legendary bands to be angry at a lot of things today. The music industry pretty much shit on the greats when the 90s came, forever marking that decade a dark time. Also, I must say that for anyone to say Taylor Swift is "better" than Def Leppard clearly didn't grow up in the 80s. Most singers today can't touch his golden voice from the 80s. They dont train like that anymore. SLS has watered down the talent.

Regardless of whether Joe was right to voice his opinion, the reality is his comment was dead on. Another reality check for Brett Michaels...lip sync or not, Poison music sucks my fat one. It's sappy sissy silly music. Def Leppard's first SIX albums are classic hard-rock, sonic-rock, anthem-rock that influenced many subsequent artists. The songs are amazing not just for their time but are better than the shiyt out today.

"Wollongong" Australia. I never heard of that place. May explain the empty seats. Joe's comment on the surface seems arrogant, but deep down, he's right about glam bands. Stopping on their terms is another way of saying couldn't come up with anything relevant for the times. Granted, most of the best Def Lep albums came in the 80s but the first 5 or 6 albums are great. Not many bands have that many great albums. You mention grundge bands but no shoegaze from the 90s.

The increased focus on cracking America alienated their British fans, true, and it took years for them to get past this and become as popular in Britain as they were in the States.

On the other hand, the fact is that amongst the 5 best rock bands in terms of having two 10 million+ albums in the States, the 4 come from the UK(Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and of course Def Leppard) and only Van Halen being american... But this doesn't rule out that both countries have produced some colossal rock bands over the years...

@bappichulo That was CMT Crossroads, Taylor was a huge def leppard fan all her life and said in an interview that if she was ever to do a crossroads show she'd like Def Leppard. She wasn't sure if they would actually say yes, but she reached out and they got a hold of her and they did it. The DVD is awesome they are really down to earth and respect each others stuff. This was just before Fearless released so this was also good marketing wise and to gain new fans.

honestly , this isn't a knock on the crue but there were a lot of bands at the time that couldn't touch Lep musically speaking. Crue was one of theose bands, Lep had a shitload of talent , i think that was what joe was saying , look at crues , poison and some of the others first couple of albums. They all got mature later and got better , but the first few albums really were not as good as the latter ones for them. Lep had talent from the first album on..

I like both bands, but have to back Poison in this debate. Poison doesn't have any qualms about what are. They're a cheesy 80s glam rock band and they know it. Their music didn't change the world, but it was good rockin' fun.
Def Lep is a bit more deluded. They never stuck to a style (they went from heavy metal to hard rock to rock to pop rock to pop) and haven't done anything decent in at least a decade. That, and Joe seems incapable of not bitching whenever he's interviewed.

to settle the whole lip syncing thing...joe had a really bad upper respiratory infection...i saw them live right before they did the show and he could barely talk and was obviously hurting...for the show his voice was completely gone, forcing them to have to fake the performance. And Joe did have a point, it was looks before music for most of the 80's band...originally including poison who could barely play their instruments on their debut album...it was the MTV effect.

I have seen Slipknot and Def Leppard live in concert twice each. Both bands at Download Festival UK and Sheffield Arena UK and i can say that Def Leppard were the better band. And i can't say i am a massive fan of Bullet For My Valentine on the contrary i like one maybe two songs i prefer a different taste in music probably similar if not the same bands as you such as Iron Maiden, Metallica ect, ect so i do actually know a fair deal about music my friend.

The people i went to Download with are pretty big Slipknot and even they said that Def Leppard were nearlly as good as them one or two said they were better and the fact they're alot older than Slipknot that says alot. So you saw them on Youtube, thats nothing Limp Bizkits' set is shit on Youtube however in reality it was quite good. Aw....see now that' s a shame. I LOVE Def Leppard. And I love Poison as well. I hate to see Joe express such negativity towards a fellow musician towards a "peer". But what can you do? He has a right to his opinion. It would have been wise of him to keep that particular bit to himself, but there's nothing that man can say that could EVER change how I feel about him and Lep ;o)
Bret is a genuinely nice human being. He handled the situation with grace and I think that was very classy of him.

Too bad his opinion was RIGHT. Poison does care about the music though. But a lot of 80's bands were appearance first, music second...but they usually still made kick-ass rock and roll. Poison is great, but can't touch Def Leppard...espiacally EARLY, classic-hard-rock Def Leppard.

Oh crap, Def Leppard has made a career of making ballads. On through the night, High N dry, Pyromania were great albums. Everything since has been crap! Oh yeah Poison stinks also with their pink lip stick.

I have to say something. I am extremely high Poison and fan but Saul Hudson, better known as Slash the ex Guns n roses guitarist once tried out to be Poison's guitar player. They thought he could play the fucking guitar great and were about to choose him but laughed at him because of how he dressed. They asked him if that is how he normally dressed and he responded yes. They told him that he could play increidble but he couldnt dress. And now Def Leppard and Poison are going to play a tour?

Excuse me Brett. but I saw that show on dancing with the stars and they didn't fake that. I didn't like the fact they were on a show like that, But I have to wonder where Brett gets the nerve to say anything! I mean considering he's been on a stupid reality show for the last couple of years trolling for a floozy! Women that you know Joe wouldn't go near! Poison have never enjoyed the kind of success that Def has! not even close. When's the last time Poison had a hit?

to badmouth the whole scene. Joe Elliott is the most pretentious A hole out there. I once cared about this band, ONCE. I and others who listen to this brand of music will allow Joe and his band to go whatever direction they want to musically. BUT, I and others out there WILL NOT allow Joe to bad mouth the "Metal" genre, especially when he and his band were very much a part of it. Listen to "On Through The Night" and "High 'N Dry" and tell me these albums weren't metal. PLEASE!!!

Sadly, it took Brett Michaels to come to the forefront and take on Joe Elliott. Could the "Metal" community have a worse spokesperson than that of Brett Michaels...It goes way beyond this interview. Joe Elliott has been on a personal crusade to tarnish anything that is branded "Metal". In another interview at this same event, Joe tried to claim that the only relevant NWOBHM artist was Maiden. PFFTTT!!! Joe also hates the fact that the band was ever linked to the genre, and does whatever he can..

whoo!! chill out everyone, love um both, Leppard is one of highest selling albums band on all time, and Poison is the highest selling live band in the 1990,s and leading the 2000., which is amazing for a band that does hasnt released any new albums in awhile. Pioson is a well oiled machine and great live, i dont think Joe was throwing insults his way. But i do take offense for LA Guns, Motley Crue, RATT and Quit Riot.

Bret Michaels is a worthless MTV sellout. After the Rock of Love Bullshit and the excessively needless ROCK OF LOVE 2 I don't think Poison has any credibility left whatsoever. At least for me I can't stand to listen to any of their music, which is sad because I used to love poison. Def Leppard kicks ass and always will.

Brett Michaels just announced a tour with Def Leppard this summer on CNN. I really look forward to it. It should be a lot of fun.
