Using those basic chords allow the singer to concentrate on the actual worship and the lyrics. It's easy to memorize, easy to play. Also, the people can learn the songs very easily too (some could even guess the chord and it'd still sound good)
So, I think it's pretty neat how so many amazing, great songs are made with such basic chords.
Nice. So many CCM songs use G C D Em and most of the time it's G5, Cadd9, Em7, Dsus4 over and over, just different order. It sounds nice, but it would be good to hear some more variety in the chord progressions. Just my opinion.
Great song though, of course. Chris rules, great writer and singer.
Not like the beautiful old hymn but I enjoyed it, but what on earth do these young men have against wearing clothes that don't look like rags and what is wrong with using a comb? Why do you want to go all day a lookin like you just crawled out of bed?
I love this song! Inspired by God, whether in 1860 through Robert Lawery or new 2006 (or whatever year) version through Chris T. and Matt R., it ALL belongs to the Lord, inspired by the Lord. It touches hearts and glorifies Him and thats all that matters. And technically, Chris does say that he and Matt took this hymn by Robert Lawery 1860 and adapted the lyrics putting their own musical version to it. Credit was given where credit was due. stop judging critics and just sing.
Im sorry but its just not the origonal, i have found some amazing covers of this song and this one is a complete other song, ripped off from a classic
apologies. reviewing what I wrote, i should of said "blinded by their faith". i've no problems with a faith based on honesty, reason and common-sense. also, "ignorant" was a bit strong, maybe.
He gave credit to the original, and there is nothing wrong with being inspired by and adapting old songs. If it weren't for him, most of us would never have been aware of this song, in any form. I doubt any of us sing the Psalms as the Israelites did originally, does that mean any new song based on the Psalms is lesser? As long as the words are solid, and the song written and sung for His glory, God will be pleased.
My band leader has asked me to learn this song so that we can play it in church in acouple of weeks as prelude for our worship service. It is so cool to find this and to be able to practice along with it. I'm not accustomed to using the capo, so this will be a good time to start. Thanks C. Tomlin and interviewer for making this available. GREAT!
The title of the original hymn was NOT "How can I keep from singing"...it IS, however, named "My Life Flows On". geez. It is one of my most favorite hymns of all time. That, and 'Be Still My Soul'. Musical healing in those hymns...I don't know what this is... :(
Music develops in collaboration w/ the past. To paraphrase Jesus: a (musician)"...brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old." The greatest (& worst) have borrowed/drawn inspiration from others. This falls into the "inspired by" category. Some of the lyric is close to the hymn but has its own imagery/sentiment. The tune is original with no relation the Civil-war era tune. Love it or hate it for its own merits...not because it bows to and shares a title w/the hymn that inspired it!
I totally agree with mjr2011... Who are we to criticize anybody... Its all about God.. GOd gave it to them again so that we are reminded of who we are, what we are n where we stand. Guys were nothing compared to the greatness of our Heavenly Father. WERE NOTHING... FOR GOD IS EVERYTHING...
I think that christians have better things to do than criticize someone for using an original hymn name for a new song. Who honestly cares, its all worship and its all about God, be happy and worship. :)
I agree with the other comments about how silly it is that he's using name of a classic hymn for this song; I'd probably be inclined to like it if he didn't so heavily make it different.
As for the folks making comments about copyright, even if it *was* copyrighted, it would have expired by now. Regardless, it would be much better if he'd at least retitled it, because it cheapens the name of the classic hymn.
Well, as far as I know, they're not sure who originally wrote it, it was rumoured to be a Young Friends song and obviously one of them wrote it down and was credited with it
With all due respect (I don't meant to sound negative), I hope he gives credit to the writers of the original hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing" by minister Robert Lowry in the 1860's. It's almost a blatant rip-off, almost word-for-word, if he does not...
The song has been covered by many artist, including Enya and the country group, Shedaisy, which shows its profound effect.
Personally, I like the lyrics of the original better. It's more poetic.
RUGBY80...THE ONLY THING THAT IS THE SAME IS THE TITLE... How Can I Keep From Singing? Robert Wadsworth Lowry My life flows on in endless song; Above earth's lamentation I hear the sweet though far off hymn That hails a new creation: Through all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul— How can I keep from singing?
Good to know... My bad... I just have a problem if so-called "artist" do not give respect to the classics and inspirations to their work, when other people have no idea about them. I'm happy to hear that he does give credit to the original writers, though.
SOOOOOO AMAZING!! I LOVE THIS SONG SOOOO MUCH! I am gonna sing this song @ my youth group on Sunday! I love this song! It's like my favorite Chris Tomlin song!
This song is easier to play than I thought, especially with Tomlin's new chord technique. Notice his ring finger and picky stay on the first 2 strings for chords like G, G/B, C and even D. That's neat!!! Brilliant!!! Genius!!! =P
Matt Redman rocks.. that man is a man of humility and a "friend" of God. I'm really being uplifted and encouraged by Chris Tomlin's songs these days. kudos to both of them.
Perfect!

It may not be exactly the same words, but some of the phrases in the hymm are restructured like:
-my life flows on in endless song = there is an endless song
-i hear the sweet though far off hymm+I hear the music ringing = I hear the music ring
-it finds an echo in my soul=echoes in my soul
-Through all the tumult and the strife=though the storms may come
And many others(:
