  • Perfect!

  • One thing that's hard for me is to figure the strumming pattern can anyone please help ?

  • Good point. He gets so much out of 4 chords. Lots of talent there!

  • Using those basic chords allow the singer to concentrate on the actual worship and the lyrics. It's easy to memorize, easy to play. Also, the people can learn the songs very easily too (some could even guess the chord and it'd still sound good)

So, I think it's pretty neat how so many amazing, great songs are made with such basic chords.

  • Nice. So many CCM songs use G C D Em and most of the time it's G5, Cadd9, Em7, Dsus4 over and over, just different order. It sounds nice, but it would be good to hear some more variety in the chord progressions. Just my opinion.

Great song though, of course. Chris rules, great writer and singer.

  • Not like the beautiful old hymn but I enjoyed it, but what on earth do these young men have against wearing clothes that don't look like rags and what is wrong with using a comb? Why do you want to go all day a lookin like you just crawled out of bed?

  • go to 1:37

  • I love this song sooooooooooooooo much!!

Glory to The Lord the Most High!!

  • this song's amazing! I can sing this song anytime, anywhere! It's just awesome

  • I love this song! Inspired by God, whether in 1860 through Robert Lawery or new 2006 (or whatever year) version through Chris T. and Matt R., it ALL belongs to the Lord, inspired by the Lord. It touches hearts and glorifies Him and thats all that matters. And technically, Chris does say that he and Matt took this hymn by Robert Lawery 1860 and adapted the lyrics putting their own musical version to it. Credit was given where credit was due. stop judging critics and just sing.

  • he knows how to sing unto and worship his KING ...........JESUS.........this is the song that comes from the heart.

  • "I do it be Bb," he says. He does EVERYTHING in Bb!! :^)

  • Thanks Chris. Glory be to God!

I like the mix here: (volume)

    2/3 vocal

    1/3 guitar

    (full strumming) Great Work!

  • really vitty201080?

    a complete rip off??

Name 5 songs that aren't ripped off from something else, or someone elses work.

It isn't appreciated to come on here, and trash an amazing artist like Chris.

    Go trash some athiest crap.

  • i love this song as it came timely when i had to deal w my dad's demise and also issues in my life when my faith was challenged.

  • Chris dont rock, God rocks. its all abt God not the music or de player

  • @jchia49 Chris rocks cause God lives in him ;) and Chris rocks cause he rocks for the Rock :)

  • sia eva likeit

  • chris rocks!!!

  • wow...I tried this song on acoustic...a little akward though cause of the fact that the song on the CD is full of electric, bass and loads of drums

  • this is ok, but it isn't anything like the orignal lyric

  • Im sorry but its just not the origonal, i have found some amazing covers of this song and this one is a complete other song, ripped off from a classic

  • He credits not only the orignal artist but also the guy who redone it.

  • absolutely agree with you vitty201080. it's a truly awful rehash for ignorant folk blinded by faith. he should of called it by another name.

  • apologies. reviewing what I wrote, i should of said "blinded by their faith". i've no problems with a faith based on honesty, reason and common-sense. also, "ignorant" was a bit strong, maybe.

  • @vitty201080

So are you saying that God used Chris to rip off a song that he wrote through someone else? Dude this is one of the really famous songs

  • He gave credit to the original, and there is nothing wrong with being inspired by and adapting old songs. If it weren't for him, most of us would never have been aware of this song, in any form. I doubt any of us sing the Psalms as the Israelites did originally, does that mean any new song based on the Psalms is lesser? As long as the words are solid, and the song written and sung for His glory, God will be pleased.

  • amen to that.

  • I was thrilled to find this available.

My band leader has asked me to learn this song so that we can play it in church in acouple of weeks as prelude for our worship service. It is so cool to find this and to be able to practice along with it. I'm not accustomed to using the capo, so this will be a good time to start. Thanks C. Tomlin and interviewer for making this available. GREAT!

  • chord?

  • These r so helpful!

  • chris tomlin sings powerful songs

  • The title of the original hymn was NOT "How can I keep from singing"...it IS, however, named "My Life Flows On". geez. It is one of my most favorite hymns of all time. That, and 'Be Still My Soul'. Musical healing in those hymns...I don't know what this is... :(

  • Music develops in collaboration w/ the past. To paraphrase Jesus: a (musician)"...brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old." The greatest (& worst) have borrowed/drawn inspiration from others. This falls into the "inspired by" category. Some of the lyric is close to the hymn but has its own imagery/sentiment. The tune is original with no relation the Civil-war era tune. Love it or hate it for its own merits...not because it bows to and shares a title w/the hymn that inspired it!

  • I totally agree with mjr2011... Who are we to criticize anybody... Its all about God.. GOd gave it to them again so that we are reminded of who we are, what we are n where we stand. Guys were nothing compared to the greatness of our Heavenly Father. WERE NOTHING... FOR GOD IS EVERYTHING...

  • I think that christians have better things to do than criticize someone for using an original hymn name for a new song. Who honestly cares, its all worship and its all about God, be happy and worship. :)

  • I agree with the other comments about how silly it is that he's using name of a classic hymn for this song; I'd probably be inclined to like it if he didn't so heavily make it different.

As for the folks making comments about copyright, even if it *was* copyrighted, it would have expired by now. Regardless, it would be much better if he'd at least retitled it, because it cheapens the name of the classic hymn.

  • Well, as far as I know, they're not sure who originally wrote it, it was rumoured to be a Young Friends song and obviously one of them wrote it down and was credited with it

  • WOOT best song eva

  • I dont think hymns of that era were copywrited. I could be wrong, but it seems like a lot of hymns have been updated over the centuries.

  • Why did he steal the title "How Can I keep from singing" from the original hymn?

  • Its based on the original hymn. He obviously got the copyright for it from someone. Personally I love the song and his voice.

  • If you listen carefully he explains why and he did not steal it.

  • to God be the glory@

  • God bless us Christians!!!!

  • PRAISE THE LORD

  • this just fills me up with spiritual powerm, i just love this song! chris rocks!!!

  • chris rocks!!!

  • Comment removed

  • How can we keep from singing God's praise???

  • What is the matter with you people. He actually mentions in the video of the original author of the song. Stop from missing the point.

It is all done for the glory of the King of Kings.

  • i totally agree with rakom, its all done for god

  • Your version doesn't work. The original was what the hymn is supposed to be.

  • With all due respect (I don't meant to sound negative), I hope he gives credit to the writers of the original hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing" by minister Robert Lowry in the 1860's. It's almost a blatant rip-off, almost word-for-word, if he does not...

The song has been covered by many artist, including Enya and the country group, Shedaisy, which shows its profound effect.

Personally, I like the lyrics of the original better. It's more poetic.

  • RUGBY80...THE ONLY THING THAT IS THE SAME IS THE TITLE... How Can I Keep From Singing? Robert Wadsworth Lowry My life flows on in endless song; Above earth's lamentation I hear the sweet though far off hymn That hails a new creation: Through all the tumult and the strife I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul— How can I keep from singing?
  • It may not be exactly the same words, but some of the phrases in the hymm are restructured like:

-my life flows on in endless song = there is an endless song

-i hear the sweet though far off hymm+I hear the music ringing = I hear the music ring

-it finds an echo in my soul=echoes in my soul

-Through all the tumult and the strife=though the storms may come

    And many others(:

  • he does, if you watched the video:P

  • Good to know... My bad... I just have a problem if so-called "artist" do not give respect to the classics and inspirations to their work, when other people have no idea about them. I'm happy to hear that he does give credit to the original writers, though.

  • SOOOOOO AMAZING!! I LOVE THIS SONG SOOOO MUCH! I am gonna sing this song @ my youth group on Sunday! I love this song! It's like my favorite Chris Tomlin song!

  • trully loved this song God is so Good and Chris is better than blessed

  • waaahh chris tomlin is annointed and nakakabless... i love this song... go go go.. for the g,lory of our LORD

  • i love that song! really!

  • What if youre an atheist...?

  • Then open your mind and heart up and realize.

  • Then this song isn't for you. And you should know that.

  • His voice is God's gift !

  • love chris tomlin!!!!!

  • endless song....

  • so cool wish someone can tell me the Rules!!!!

  • chris tomlin Rules!!!!

  • i love you

    @camp you was cool

    god bless you chris tomlin

  • This song is easier to play than I thought, especially with Tomlin's new chord technique. Notice his ring finger and picky stay on the first 2 strings for chords like G, G/B, C and even D. That's neat!!! Brilliant!!! Genius!!! =P

  • I thought it would be the same as the Enya song.

  • i like the version we sing in chorus better

  • Matt Redman rocks.. that man is a man of humility and a "friend" of God. I'm really being uplifted and encouraged by Chris Tomlin's songs these days. kudos to both of them.

  • Such a beautiful song

  • amazing... wow...

  • I got the cd the day it came out.

  • embarrassing.

  • Why do you say that?

  • i think he means he's embarrassed; for some reason or another.

  • The chord structure?
