READ THIS to get the letterbox without cutting out video just export it to quicktime. Then go to options on quick time export thing in imovie and change the size of the video to 1920 by 800. That will give you the letter box without cutting off part of the video.

@BryceG1990 try exporting the video with the transitions on it, then import that into your library and add the effect onto that clip

just add green/blue color in the middle and click green screen or blue screen and then you have it ! :D

Nice tutorial... may I add, that you can get letterbox effect natively (but it requires manually exporting via Quicktime).

This methods gives you 2 advantages over overlaying a picture. In iMovie you only have one over lay clip (if you use it up with letterbox pic, you can't over lay with another video clip). Another advantage in my opinion it may degrade video quality, or at times a line from the movie in the background may leak out on the top or bottom edge. (just a warning).

here is how to do n iMovie11 shooting @ 1280x720p

-export using quicktime

-click "options"

-"size"

-"Dimensions" -> "custom"

-Field box @ 1920x820 (or play around with the height that you like, personally i like 1920x900)

-click "preserve...ratio" - >"letterbox"

-OK... EXPORT ... and enjoy native letterbox with out wasting your over lay effect! ; )

@Madgegames What I do is do what he does in Photoshop, only ill make the white part green so when I click on "green screen" in iMovie 11, it will work fine.

Is there a way to prevent the letter box from overlapping the video. I had to re-shoot some parts because the letterbox was on there face. I'll just have to keep this in mind next time

@604912gj that is the downside... you just have to keep in mind to give the top and bottom of your shots some head room while shooting, ive also had the same problem with some of my older footage

I had the same playback problem with my old macbook pro. I got so annoyed, I bought the brand new 13" macbook pro i5 with ssd. I don't have that problem anymore! :D

nevermind i figured it out, just make a green letterbox instead of white haha then use green screen Lol

there's still green screen in iMovie '11 , just go iMovie>Preferences> then click Show Advanced Tools. sad thing bout this one is that the letterbox effect still doesnt seem to work everytime i change it to negative. the letterbox just covers my entire video :(

It seems your Event Library and your Project Library are switched compared to my version of iMovie. Which version of iMovie are you using? Is there a way to switch the orientation of the windows?

Could you just invert the colors of your letter box file when you create it to save a step in iMovie?

@YBJaredYoung possibly, but unfortunately i cant check... i just recently upgraded to ilife '11 and the letterbox effect doesnt work in the newest imovie. i will figure out a way around it and post soon, if you get it to work let us all know!
