I haven't heard this in years. Shockingly prophetic. hurdy gurdy is sad. roly poly singin songs of love. here comes roly poly. roly poly is mad. Draw your own conclusions.
i watched zodiac a few days ago, this song is used to devastating effect, its playing at the start of the film when the first attack takes place, theres a bizarre catharsis at the end of the film, becuase the survivor of that first attack identifies the zodiac killer.." i havent seen this face since july 4th 1969, and im very sure that thats the man that shot me", and this song starts playing, gave me goosebumps. havent been able to get this song out of my head for days now
Jeff Beck on guitar folks . . . Beck just never had that pompous ass ego - didn't care who didn't know he played this track. 1968 . . . 8th grade riding my stingray bike throwing the daily news learning to light a cigarette with a one-handed book of matches. Those were the days; this was the music . . .
according to donovan ledlass,it was john bonham on drums, john paul jones on base, and jimmy page playing what he called the first celtic rock and roll
People may snicker at Donovan these days (why not snicker at the Grateful Dead too while you're at it?), but he was a Truly Great Man and a seminal figure in Rock. He well deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Why, he taught John Lennon how to finger-pick on guitar! :)
hurdy gurdy IS an instrument, and if you put it in the search engine I bet you can see some cats jammin on one...lemme check.....yup.I'm gonna recomend..Hurdy Gurdy: Double Header..cause of the cute hippie chick.t.f.t.upload
@hugatag I read an interview in which Donovan credited Page with playing " the first power chord solo" on this song and that he was so blown away by Page's solo that he dropped the last verse of the song in order to include it on the track. There was no mention of Jeff Beck. I also read that Alan Parker may have contributed, but only those sitar-sounding chords heard before the choruses. Page playing the chords and solos and Parker only adding some creative touches make perfect sense to me.
@LedLass I am sure if you read it in an interview that your correct in that Jimmy Page played lead and not Jeff. I may have confused this with "Atlantis" but in any case I appreciate you clearing this up. Jimmy Page gets the credit and thumbs up. :)
@LedLass Nope. John Paul Jones was the musical director and he hired the sessions musicians to play on it He confirmed that it was Alan Parker on electric and Clem Cattini on drums. Jimmy Page and John Bonham are NOT featured anywhere in this song. Clem Cattini verified this, as well. Even Jimmy Page himself has denied playing on the track and said that it was Parker in an interview from '77. That's pretty rock solid evidence, there.
@LedLass There is a tampura, which sounds similar to a sitar, on this song. So unless Alan played the tampura, he didn't play "those sitar-sounding chords". The weirdest thing about it is that Donovan says Jimmy Page played the solo, but Jimmy says he wasn't even there. I've also read that Jeff Beck did play a solo, but it wasn't used.
@slpplexi1969 I reread that Donovan article I referred to, and from his description of Pagey's contribution, I now think Donovan confused this song with Sunshine Superman. Also, the same source who said Alan Parker played guitar on this track quoted Page as saying he played on the ALBUM (which means he may not have played at all on this particular SONG). Funny how simply asking, "Who's playing guitar on here?" can generate so much controversy lol And tks for telling me about the tampura :-D
@hugatag Sorry to pop your bubble, the lead guitarist on this track is Alan Parker. Please google Hurdy Gurdy Man to see the true results. You will get all the information you need.
@hugatag Sorry, but it is Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass and Bonzo Bonham on drums! So basically it's Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant.
@hugatag jeff beck did not play guitar on this.alan parker did,a studio musican.even though every one says jimmy pageplayed on this track he has said himself he did not but said he was very impressed with alan parkers playing.
I just started listening to Donovan. Downloaded a bunch of his songs to try him out. So yesterday after smoking 2 bowls and 3 blunts I put my iPod on Donovan. This songs comes on, and I fall in love with it the first time.
Lol you can just tell listening to this that people did tons of droogz in the 60's. Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy. Lol what does that even mean?? Who cares, it sounds bad ass.
@normtheclone Dude, I grew up with this shit! This is one of the best songs in the world, and, of course, doobage does it justice. Go listen to "Itchy-Coo Park" by the Small Faces. They used to play that on the radio! I spelled that name of the song wrong, but I'm high. Also, go listen to the 5-minute version of Crimson & Clover by Tommy James. Not the cut version, The over 5- minute-version. It's out there in here. Wow, & I ain't even buzzed!
Lots of discussion about who played on this track, though I still remember when it came out, a guy on the radio introduced it as Donovan with help from Paul McCartney playing the backing instruments. It sure sounds like McCartney on drums (classic guitarist playing drums sound)...I think some of those session guys couldn't remember who played on what tracks, as they did so many.
@westpsmity apparently alan parker is the one. i always liked many guitarists. hendrix, clapton, page, townsend, harrison, kreiger, green, segovia, bream, romero, parkening, richards, and then i met gilmour, and beck,, and then buddy guy asked me to hold his gretsch during a break , and so i liked them the most of all. move forward another decade, and i met will sergeant and bernard sumner. dean wareham of luna and jason spaceman of spiritualized, and right now i love danny kirwan
It's obvious the hudy gurdy is the Buddha. Reference to unenlightened and the fact that it is then that he comes (Buddhas arise in unenlightened times). Also the reference to rolly plolly as the future Buddha is depicted sometimes. The future Buddha is the Buddha of love and compassion. It was written when the music groups were contacting eastern mysticism.
It's a song about going really deep into yourself spiritually. The Hurdy Gurdy man is God. see? That's why it sounds like he is meditating with a mantra and Hurdy Gurdy, God, The most high or whatever it is, he is clearly obsessed with it & trying to praise it or get to it or just be with it...I think that's what it means. When the chorus starts & he starts saying Hurdy Gurdy Man over and over again it sounds like it just got very deep. The Zodiac made people see God but the movie twists it.
@kl990 Wow, I have to admit that I am flattered , thank you friend :o) Donovan wrote Hurdy Gurdy Man while at the Maharishi meditation retreat with the Beatles, It is said that George Harrison wrote the lyrics for last verse. The Hurdy Gurdy man likely is the Maharishi instead of God but that is the same idea because the Maharishi is the connection to God(at least to Donovan) Thanks again 8^)
yes I do know its bass and do know its baseball not bassball.of course nerd. john paul jones played base and maybe produced..It is certain Jimmy page was not the lead guitarist.
Alan parker who later produced and arranged other recordings was the lead guitarist. clem cattini was the drummer I think parker had a group called blue mink? Anyways this was supported by a person at the sessions. The jimmy paige rumors will always live on?Anyways it sounds far out doesnt it?

This song was a greta pick to give "Zodiac" a real period flavor. The ironic part is that when it came out -yes, I remember- it invoked more romantic feelings than sinister ones. However, listening to it now, one has to admit that it can be taken as a little creepy.
Song is unbelivable, I mean it is perfect for Zodiac, but it's so much more than just that! I'm only 33 and I can respect the shit out of it. I never even knew who Donovan was.
@acerb45666555 No it's not. It's about the hurdy gurdy players in Russia. The hurdy gurdy was an organ instrument which used a clog like structure to press against the strings. Donovan and other 60's 'enlighten' folk saw these people as 'beat' and 'cool', but in reality they were poor and often street people. In later times Stalin gathered many of them up and executed them due to the fact they were bringing culture to the people of communist Russia. Thanks
I just saw Donovan at the Albert Hall on Friday for the first time. The concert was good because it was in keeping with the '60s - ie not over-produced, no hype and a little rough around the edges. The audience went wild when Jimmy Page came on.
In the booklet that came with Donovan's 1992 double CD, Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976, Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Page are listed as the electric guitar players and John Bonham and Clem Cattini as drummers on the recording. However, according to John Paul Jones, who arranged and played bass on the track (and also booked the session musicians), Clem Cattini played the drums and Alan Parker played the electric guitar.[4] This line-up was confirmed by Cattini [5]-Wikipedia
@Cielamouroux Page played guitar on this track, in many ways it was the first formulation of Zed Zep as John Bono was on drums. Harrison also wrote a verse to this track, but was never put on due to the fact that the song would become too long.
Email sent BY JPJ: "TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN I have been contacted by Clem Cattini with regard to Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man I would like to confirm that the musicians on the record were as follows Donovan - Accoustic Guitar John Paul Jones - Arrangement/Musical Director and Bass Guitar Alan Parker - Lead (electric) Guitar Clem Cattini - Drums No other musicians were involved in this session The session was produced by Mickie Most and engineered by Eddie Kramer. John Paul Jones London 05/2005"
@wdchefdave56 There is no proof that Robert Plant played on this album, it's just rumor. Robert's not talking and neither is Donovan. I dare say they probably don't remember, anyway/
I remember the first time I heard this in 1968. It hit me like a sledgehammer! Never the same after. Soon followed a succession of drugs, garage bands, and long haired chicks. Underground FM became where the journey continued. Life changing. I wonder if that happens with kids today?
I haven't heard this in years. Shockingly prophetic. hurdy gurdy is sad. roly poly singin songs of love. here comes roly poly. roly poly is mad. Draw your own conclusions.

This song was a greta pick to give "Zodiac" a real period flavor. The ironic part is that when it came out -yes, I remember- it invoked more romantic feelings than sinister ones. However, listening to it now, one has to admit that it can be taken as a little creepy.

sounds like Zodiac Killer's headaches............

Song is unbelivable, I mean it is perfect for Zodiac, but it's so much more than just that! I'm only 33 and I can respect the shit out of it. I never even knew who Donovan was.
QuickestTrigger 6 months ago 2
Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham were the backing band. On this song.

Alan Parker plays the lead guitar on this and it's just stunning. Jimmy Page couldn't have done better.

this song is about The Buddha!
acerb45666555 7 months ago

@ludwigvan17 lol i hate rumors never know which ones r right i wonder who started this one.
MysticVideos 8 months ago
@ludwigvan17 Alan Parker played the lead guitar....Jimmy Page (& Jimi Hendrix) were not available.
Cielamouroux 8 months ago
@Cielamouroux Page played guitar on this track, in many ways it was the first formulation of Zed Zep as John Bono was on drums. Harrison also wrote a verse to this track, but was never put on due to the fact that the song would become too long.
adzscott 7 months ago
@adzscott Dude: Thanks for that info. I love Zep and of course I love Harrison but I never knew that.

Donovan also sang backup on Alice Cooper's song Billion Dollar Babies. Didn't know that until recently. An odd duo actually.

This is "Led Zeppelin" without Robert Plant.
(Prove me wrong.)
I liked Donovan... but, LOVED "The ZEP!" !!!
wdchefdave56 9 months ago
@wdchefdave56 There is no proof that Robert Plant played on this album, it's just rumor. Robert's not talking and neither is Donovan. I dare say they probably don't remember, anyway/
bushwickgirl347 9 months ago
@wdchefdave56 Only John Paul played on this. See quotes from John Paul and his emails above.

I remember the first time I heard this in 1968. It hit me like a sledgehammer! Never the same after. Soon followed a succession of drugs, garage bands, and long haired chicks. Underground FM became where the journey continued. Life changing. I wonder if that happens with kids today?
