Isn't it a bit idealistic, though? I see the argument that we are vulnerable since power grids are far away, but we can hardly expect to provide for billions of people by producing everything within a few miles of where it's consumed. Where would you strike the balance between greater local economic security and the power of specialization and trade?
Of course trade will remain; many folks are pointing to electrified rail and water transport. But for most of our history humans produced the bulk of what they needed nearby. I think that increasing fuel costs will move us toward local & regional production. Given how much US manufacturing has gone overseas, much of America needs to "relocalize."
It is kinda interesting, isn't it, that Brian WELLER helped form WELL, Willets Economic LocaLization? He loves those metaphors. Some pretty good ideas about community-building, I think.
The guy seems to know what hes talking about he seemed very level headed and thats what the movement needs "When we depend on where we live for our livelihood, then we take can care of it." Very succinct and very true.
