hard to say. Each has their own take to Dexter and really diverge from the first book/season. The books give more of a dark perspective at the character of dexter and the challeneges he meets (dearly devoted dexter is the darkest thing I have ever read in my life). The show though expands more on the outside characters and developments of dexter. You really get to know batista, laguerta, deborah, metsuka, the villains etc. in the show while in the book they are really flat.

Doakes stays alive in the books. Although it would be far better off if he was dead. The books are far darker than the show, but the show has a lot more vitality to it.

Although it ended up being his downfall, Doakes's suspicions in Dexter was in a way a credit to how good his cop instincts were. Dexter is so good at putting on a mask that he can work with a police force everyday and have a wife and 3 children and not allow anyone to suspect he is anything but normal. So even though Doakes's obsession led to his death, he in my eyes is a better cop then Angel, Deb, Laguta, etc because he saw through a mask no-one else did!!!!!!
