I first went to the "Wheel" in early '66. Travelled from Liverpool, we had nothing like it. I did a bit of DJaying. As with other DJ's I sent to the USA for records, without even hearing them first, if they where on the soul lists I bought it. Some of them where "shite" but if I got a good one I would Hammer it in my sets, until I had punters asking where they could get. The birth of Northern Soul ???
I was a late comer to the Wheel and started going at the end of '69 continuing to the final night. I'd forgotten some of the acts I'd seen. This brought it all back. Many thanks for posting and Keep the Faith!!
The Wheel has been open again for about 9 years. They do a Sunday afternoon session 3 -8pm (2nd Sunday of the month) and a Friday session (last Friday in the month) 9 til 2am. The same music the same atmosphere its brilliant. Check out their website : ) They post pics of it on there.
It was a beutifull mix SOUL+ Phet, red and browns plus Geno Washinton.I have just got to do it again. It was the best time of my life. The society has reduced me to the poison alcohol.
A Brilliant Video Insight of the now Legendary Club i missed out on but greatley appreciated now with the dedication and input info of this top quality post, big big thankyou from a 73 Casino boy.Riker.Ktf ^
Ah memories . Loved the Wheel so much I moved up to Manchester from Cambridge .Got any gear ? I might still be able to dance if I had some blues .lol Keep on blocking.
Great stuff man. Almost got the old bones moving! Can't do the back drop any more or I'd end up in A&E. Sorry to say I moved on from Lambrettas to rice burners. Leather isn't as revealing as mohair suits! Are we dying out?
Nice spin, mate! Amazing how many legendary artists appeared at the Wheel! I used to do Ivors Abadis brothers garden years ago, lol! His wife used to be always cooking food for the club, which at the time was called Mr Smiths, same premises as the Wheel.
Keith Rylett and Phil Scott's book CENtral 1179 is worth a purchase for you Twisted Wheeler's out there.
