I'm from Lockport Illinois and we have a pretty impressive lock there. It is on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship canal. There is also a set of old locks on the old Illinois and Michigan canal. The interesting thing about the new locks is that they have two vertical drop gates at the upstream side which drop into the floor of the lock chamber. This is because when they built them in the 1930's there wasn't enough concrete thickness for miter gates at that end.
