  • Great Day for Canada

  • excellent video

  • LOL back then u were a VILLAGE...haha

  • @wade2bosh This was an insider joke. The American commentator who called the NASL telecast of the Soccer Bowl final referred to Vancouver as a "village", so to taunt his ignorance (he later apologised) the "village" tag got used by Vancouver fans in reference to the game.

  • Great matchup to for a Championship with the Whitecaps and Cosmos

  • Did I read that this was the largest public demonstration in the history of Vancouver?

  • @KNS1996DFS

It may have been. I have lived here a long time and haven't seen one bigger.

  • The Cosmos had some great teams in the 70's and could still be around today is the NASL was run better

  • @FrsBigeasy warner bros. bought the cosmos whoever for whatever they wanted and other teams couldnt keep up and the league eventually bust beacuse of it.

  • @craigclass That's what people say. It's a load of BS though....NY didn't run over the league in the last few years. The problem with the league was owners who thought they could buy a team and draw 20,000+ without making an effort to do so. Some owners bought a team, had them for one year and because they "only" drew 10,000 a game to that one season decided to fold.

  • Big day for the City of Vancouver

  • "White is the colour, soccer is the game..." That sounds like the first verse of the Saskatchewan Roughriders fight song! Were the Riders and Caps fight songs done by the same songwriter? By the way, I'm from Pittsburgh (no NASL team, but we had an indoor soccer team), and I spelled 'colour' different since this is a tribute to the '79 Soccer Bowl champs!

  • @kcthatsawinner

It was originally recorded by the Chelsea Football club in 1972 as "Blue is the Colour." Vancouver then copied it with some changes for "White is the Colour in 1978. Saskatchewan heard the Whitecaps version and re-wrote it as Green is the Colour afterwards.

  • ray hankin joined in 1980!

  • OK, I need some help. Whenever I went to Whitecaps games they played some upbeat instrumental music as we left the stadium and it wasn't Blondie heart of glass. Anyone know??

  • @jjsd0409

    Sorry, I forget.

  • @jjsd0409 I recall the piece too. I have asked my brothers if they can think of the name, they are a bit older and we attended every game the team had from first season to last. I do recall "Heart of Glass" being played as an intro to another show on the radio during that period. We would listen to the post game show (CJOR?) and then change it over to some show that played HoG in heavy rotation.

  • @jjsd0409 It was the theme from Soul Train

  • @jjsd0409 The song that was played was the Soul Train Theme look it up here on you tube once you hear it it will dust off he cobb webs of 79 ;)

  • @jjsd0409 Sorry this is the correct version TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)" by MFSB

  • White is the colour???? As a Chelsea fan I love it!!!!

  • What was the name of their manager? An ex Leeds and Eire player. Did Ray Hankin join that year?

  • @copperpotbaby Tony Waiters.

  • @geoffstephen The one I'm thinking of is Johnny Giles.

  • Apparently Sony Music owns the copyright to some of the music that was included on this video. Hence the commercial ads that pop up on during the video and the ads to the right of the video. At least they didn't make me take it down.

  • I was there...great memories esp. of Willie Johnston having a swig or two.

  • Awesome!!!

  • Sorry for the poor quality,

  • Thanks for posting.I was a wee one sittin infront of Willie Johnson doin the diving header goal against the Cosmos at Empire.Incredible!

I wish there was quality game tapes from that run.
