People need to stop hating. Josh's remark probably went towards the dark mood of the song. Plus, consider listening to the actual recording, you'll probably change your opinion about this cover.
hey, lol. of course, josh's vocal range doesn't entirely suit the chorus, but dudes! should that matter? i mean, elliott's music remains as one of the single rawest and resonant works of art ever to exist. for someone like josh homme, with his stoner metal roots, to even acknowledge smith's work let alone cover it, it's why music itself should be celebrated.
if you've got something intelligent to criticise this with, please go ahead. if not, just listen to the original!
How is Josh Homme disrespecting Elliot Smith? He's covering his song so he's clearly a fan! He makes that gesture because they're about to play a cover of song that's fairly downbeat and doesn't want to make people depressed.
Wow. Worst cover ever. You should at least learn the song first before attempting it in front of an audience. Pathetic. Just because a song is in your vocal range doesn't mean you should sing it. Sorry folks, his voice doesn't 'suit' Elliott's. Not practicing and half assing it, as a musician, isn't 'cool.' Elliott Smith was prolific because he took his craft serious. Queens of the who?

@chrisa7x00 watch the first minute of this video dude he's just making the crowd think he's great "yeah uh we're gona play an elliot smith song but dont like slit ur wrist or anything" if i covered a song by any artist i was influenced by ide atleast RESPECT them. then, once the song starts he doesnt even know what the fuck he's playing he's looking around like a dickhead and muting his guitar strumming. I like QOTSA's early shit but he's acting like a complete idiot here...
@Youngroe1 You are an idiot. If you covered a song by an artist no one would want to hear it. Also neither Josh or Troy are muting their guitar at the start. We are all both Elliot Smith, as well as QOTSA fans, and we all agree that you are a know-nothing douche.
Anybody who professes to be an Elliott Smith fan should know he didn't cut his wrists, so I think the gesture is more in reference to the fans of Elliott Smith, or to the movie "The Royal Tenenbaums", where Luke Wilson tries to kill himself to Elliott Smith.
Also, keep in mind that when you're on stage and trying to make people laugh, occasionally, you say something that bombs.
If the thick necked, open shirted, cross wearing lead singer died tomorrow, I would make a joke about his death & then continue to cover one of his songs.
Liked the cover, didn't like the tasteless joke about suicide in the beginning. I think that's what everyone's getting all up in arms about. You can't sing a mans words and mock him without a few stones being cast in your direction. Again, I like most covers I hear of Elliott Smith. Just makes his music that much more popular.
@petetheneat420 For the record, it was inconclusive. To say that he for sure killed himself would be a lie.
Also, man such hostility. It's only music. Who cares of he was insulting Elliott Smith with wrist cutting gestures anyway? bad people are a dime a dozen, and if anyone spent their time trying to address everything they thought was wrong or offensive, well man they'd have no time for anything else.
@petetheneat420 I don't see what's strange about stabbing some one twice, a girl reportedly stabbed her husband, over 500 times. Some times one stab is all you need. I don't think a man would have it in him to stab himself twice, after the first one would likely be crippling pain.
I don't think you have to respect some one to make a cover of their song exactly though. Also, maybe he was doing it for that reason, maybe he legitimately had malice in his gesture, none of that really matters now.
@Youngroe1 I bet your mother doesn't love you even half as much as she loves me when i tickle her G-spot with my cock...from the inside. Why don't you go listen to stained or something.
@campbelljordanable why dont u come over to the U.S so i can curbstomp your faggot english face into the ground. ill kick the fuckin shit out of u bro im a year under you come over here so i can fuck u up. i dont listen to stained theyre fuckin gay. i like qotsa all im sayin here is that josh is acting like a faggot here.
@Youngroe1 England? Get your fucking facts straight, you corn-fed, inbred, dribbling little spit fuck. Did I type stained? I meant creed, I'm sorry to have ever tarnished anyone with that brush. I like QOTSA too, but I truly believe that you've lost your right to an opinion. It's arse holes like you that are the reason nobody likes Americans outside the U.S. Tell your mum i said hi...Prick.
alright dude well it says on ur profile that ur from the united kingdom.... i dont give a fuck who u are or where ur from if u go off insulting someones blood and family members online because of a taste in music or what i think is disorganized musicianship i think that youve earned YOUR right to shut the fuck up. by the way im from philly faggot im no fuckin hick
why do people think that whenever someone does a cover, they're trying to out-do the original artist? they're playing this in tribute to Elliott and b/c they enjoy playing good music, they didn't release a video for it and claim it as their own..like some people *coughcoughRihanna*, but i won't drop any names. ANYWAY i do like elliott's version better. (even tho im a bigger queens fan...)
Fuck it, I might reupload this video and cut out the opening. Might cut down on the retarded comments (not completely eradicate them, it is youtube after all).
@red157 don't bother dude, don't appeal to people's sensitivities. It's not television, it's the fucking internet. Plus, the intro makes me laugh, EVEN THE WRIST CUTTING GESTURE. He died 7 long years ago. He was not related to you. Get over it you sensitive little girls! I've said my piece, now let them say their's.
@red157 Why re-upload it without the opening? Joshua was fucking around, it was not an insult to Elliott Smith. The people who make "negative comments" simply have their heads so far up their own asses that they can't understand that he has a fucked up sense of humor. If you or them have ever watched any of Josh's interviews it would be completely obvious. Please, keep the video like it is and ignore the jackasses who want to make themselves seem righteous by "defending" Elliott.
@VincentPrice111 NO NO NO Josh Homme is NOT a douchebag. I don't think he should have associated Elliott with wrist cutting (he's more hardcore than that shit), but Josh is way cool. Oh and i really think Elliott's girlfriend killed him. He was sober, he had defensive wounds on his arms, and he was stabbed twice. Yeah, i know it's possible to stab yourself twice before you die and that he had attempted suicide a couple times before, but the defense wounds sound pretty convincing.
@sprinklesonaplane Well, I can't exactly say that you can know anyone that you don't actually know in person for sure, but I haven't seen a lot of him, only that he kind of looks like one and the wrist cutting, so maybe he isn't.
and yeah, I like to think that too, Elliott Smith only ever TALKED about killing himself besides that one time when he was drunk and jumped off of a cliff
and he had recently gotten his life back on track (Stopped drugs, refined sugar and eating red meat)
@VincentPrice111 But really, queens of the stone age is my fave band. you should look into buying some of their albums. or pirate. whatever tickles your fancy. obtain them. you will thank me. and red157.
They're assholes. I don't care if they are showing appreciation by covering Elliott's song. That joke was fucked up and not funny at all. And very disrespectful.
@smokelakes The most messed up thing about the joke to me is the fact Elliott did kill himself by a knife. I wouldn't care if he called his music emo or anything but to make fun of someone's death is completely classless.
@gotf So you think Josh Homme, who respects the music of this man enough to cover a song of his numerous times, chose to specifically reference the man's suicide for a tasteless joke? Or is it more likely that he was being glib about the relatively depressing nature of the song by making the de facto action for suicide? So, Smith killed himself with a knife, would the joke have been better if he'd faked a noose instead? A
@red157 I don't see this song Christian Brothers as sad or depressing at all. It'll be kinda different if h sung Neddle in The Hay of something. He could have just said that he thinks Elliott's music is emo instead of pretending to cut himself. I think the pretending to cut himself is tasteless because it hits Elliott a little too close to home. Josh Homme is probably a great guy but for those few seconds he was a complete asshole. It's just how I feel about it.
@red157 You don't know that he respects him. There are a lot more reasons to do a cover than just that.
Suicide evidence was inconclusive.
I think it's more likely that the fellow who looks like a douchebag and sings mockingly the song of a dead man he just wrist-cut in reference to that was indeed making fun of his death.
Hell, who knows.
Maybe he was just really fucking stupid and didn't realize the implications of what he was doing, and what you said is correct.
@VincentPrice111 "I think it's more likely that the fellow who looks like a douchebag and sings mockingly the song of a dead man he just wrist-cut in reference to that was indeed making fun of his death." Well you're wrong. Sorry and all that. Homme wouldn't cover a song of an artist he doesn't respect. And I don't think the suicide evidence was inconclusive. Dude stabbed himself in the heart.
@gotf Hes not making fun of his death you fucking idiot. The song has a depressing mood to it, thats why he made the gesture. Why would he cover one of his songs and make fun of him? What would be the point of that? Some people are so fucking stupid.
@anonbeliever1 Read to the lyrics to the song you fucktard. There's nothing depressing about the song. How about you find what the songs about before you run your mouth dumbass. Elliott Smith has depressing songs and this isn't one of them. You're right some people are fucking stupid and you're one of them Asshole (T_T)
@gotf - Fair enough the lyrics might not be that depressing but a lot of his songs has a melancholy tone to them I think thats what Josh was alluding to. The same way someone might say about Radiohead or The Smiths (slit your wrists kind of music). I don't think he meant to be offensive or even thinking about Elliott's death when he said that.
@anonbeliever1 Sorry for me being an asshole. Elliott does make depressing music. Elliott doesn't even like people interpreting his music at all. I just personally believe that making a gesture to cut your wrist is going a bit too far and may offend people who had to deal with situations like that like Elliott has. It's just my opinion.
@gotf "Read to the lyrics to the song you fucktard" That's not the only aspect of a song that someone can deem depressing. And Homme was obviously alluding to the perception of Smith in general as opposed to the specific song they were about to perform. One of my friends once referred to Smith as 'slit-your-wrist' music, and they weren't even aware of the circumstances of his death.
i'm really not sure what people are complaining about.. josh holme's voice sounds completely different from elliott smith's, but does that really make this a poor cover?
As uneven this performance is, i just love Qotsa's (album) version...and sure, his gesture may be a bit inappropriate, but cmon...life, death...its all a big fucking joke..the only that really matters in that case is Smith's music...and they honored it...
I don't think any one other than Madeleine Peyroux should cover Elliott Smith songs. Ever. They're just not made for anybody other than a) Elliott Smith or b)someone whose voice is as godly as Elliott Smith's. I don't think the gesture at the beginning was offensive, just totally unnecessary and irrelevant to the performance. They didn't need to give a giant middle finger to everybody who misses Elliott. If they want to honor his memory, they should just play the fucking song.
Josh wasn't insulting Smith! Come on, it's Homme, the guy just likes to rattle the cage and make people uncomfortable. He wouldn't perform an Elliott Smith song if he didn't respect the guy. Some people are just too damn sensitive. The guy killed himself 7 years ago, so don't give me that "ooh too early" bullshit.
@qtipteddancin No, you found it overwhelming when you were reaching desperately for something to make you feel like you don't suck at life. I think this version is much better performed than Elliot Smith's, who sounds upset like he's going to go home and stab himself in the chest.
i dont understand why everyone thinks this is a bad cover, josh homme isnt elliott smith so obviously a cover is going to be his interpretation of the song.therefore it wont sound the same as the original, and i've been fans of qotsa and elliott smith and for people to say josh homme is a bad singer have just listened to elliott a little too much, the dood was a really shitty singer but his emotion was what made him awesome.josh homme is a damn good singer and that was an awesome cover.
That's a completely FALSE accusation if I've ever heard one. No one had any clue this video would even end up on youtube as it was being filmed and you clearly gave yourself away with that statement. lol. Furthermore, that gesture was clearly just jokingly refering to the fact that; All Elliot Smith songs REALLY ARE depressing as hell.
I like QOTSA, but this is a disgrace, shitfags, its like a jock learned guitar and started harpin on how he could get back at nerds who are smarter than him by OH! Covering their GOOD songs. Why try to validate that when the person who surpassed you is dead?!? hopefully Brodie's kid isn't retarded...
stop with the arguments they are joking like evry band.u r missing the point qotsa are playing his song to honor him but no rock guy is going to say that
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
That is some of the worst falsetto that I have heard. I cannot stand when generic bands race to become the face of a fad and make fun of musical legends whose music will outlive them.
@IndustrialCinema Congratulations. Another wonderful fellow judging a band on one bad performance as if all Elliott did in his whole musical history was perform flawless shows so idiots could insult those who honour him with covers. And Queens of the Stone Age are really rather good, you'd like them if your ears weren't muffled by your ass cheeks. Ah well, the music of whatver industry puppet will outlive both... Unfortunately.
@red157 I think the issue is that while Elliott DID have some bad shows, he was magical even at his worst. The way they treat this song is like an insult, to be frank. Elliott Smith saved lives with his music, and this is like a slap in his dead-face.
@red157 Fuck man, this is a great cover. I don't get what the flack they are getting for it is but when you see Eliot Smith live, he has this kind of off approach to his own songs too. I think this works and The Queens rocked this pretty damn well.
I think we can all agree this is a god awful cover, BUT Its not like Elliott is rolling in his grave from this "tribute." (Although that little gesture he did at the beginning was pathetic. He deserves to be cock smacked for that.)
anyone who thinks this is better than Smith's original is taking crazy pills. Smith plays it better on one guitar than they do on two. This version has no emotion. It's ok but smith's is godly.
the qotsa tribute (studio version) is definitely better than smith's original. the harmonization of homme's falsetto and the other voices and the guitar work makes it just plain better
Its a tribute to him for fucks sake give them credit, QOTSA are a great band both live and in the studio, and yeah smith's verson is better, but for christ's sake you try cover a master instead of ripping on a tribute.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i like queens of the stone age. i love elliot smith. yeah, anyway this is just a really shitty cover of a great song. They choreographed it terribly and josh homme has no range. Watching him try to hit the high notes is painful to the eyes and ears.
Homme has no range? If you know QOTSA then you should be aware that one performance isn't the greatest example of his vocal ability. Hell, maybe he was trying to do his best Smith impression... I'm joking, of course. Slightly.
@red157 a clear example of this is that i belive smith is using falsetto for the high note and homme is producing it naturally, anyway to be on topeic this version of the cover is shitty but the studio version on the era vulgaris b-side collection is purely awesome.
Not even half as good as the original, takes 2 guitars to do what elliott did on one. They cover his song and then insult him.. lol... if you think this is better then the original you have no taste.
I don't think it's better than the original, and I don't think Homme insulted Elliott Smith. I do think it's an offense to the guy and his music that all a portion of his fans can do is whine and bitch when someone else wants to honour his memory.
I didnt once say that I think its lame that people cover elliotts music, just was talking to the rest of the people who thought this is better then the original when the original is played by one person amazingly. uhh ya. didnt whine or bitch.
as for everyone complaining about the gesture: i agree it was in poor taste, but i doubt very much that there's a single person here who hasn't said or done something stupid and/or offensive while trying to be funny, so we really shouldn't be so judgmental.
and if it makes any difference, i am a HUGE elliott fan.
i think suicide must be faced in a light way if not things would get very depressed qotsa only did this cover to celebrate elliot smith career its obvious that elliots career was important for qotsa
Some people is so stupid and one way minded...very good cover and tribute to a great musician..show me a artist who has made a better cover off this song. Those fanmade ones are terrible..

Elliott Smith does make depressing music. Most of the time.
...I can't believe those fuckers did a wrist cutting gesture RIGHT before they would perform one his songs.
That shit is beyond disrespectful.
HAHA THAT GUY WAS DEPRESSED, AND IS DEAD. FUNNY.
I knew that guy was a douchebag just from looking at him.
VincentPrice111 1 year ago 2
@VincentPrice111 NO NO NO Josh Homme is NOT a douchebag. I don't think he should have associated Elliott with wrist cutting (he's more hardcore than that shit), but Josh is way cool. Oh and i really think Elliott's girlfriend killed him. He was sober, he had defensive wounds on his arms, and he was stabbed twice. Yeah, i know it's possible to stab yourself twice before you die and that he had attempted suicide a couple times before, but the defense wounds sound pretty convincing.
sprinklesonaplane 1 year ago
@sprinklesonaplane Well, I can't exactly say that you can know anyone that you don't actually know in person for sure, but I haven't seen a lot of him, only that he kind of looks like one and the wrist cutting, so maybe he isn't.
and yeah, I like to think that too, Elliott Smith only ever TALKED about killing himself besides that one time when he was drunk and jumped off of a cliff
and he had recently gotten his life back on track (Stopped drugs, refined sugar and eating red meat)

gotf 1 year ago
@gotf get over yourself. switch your name to gtfo and listen to yourself
smokelakes 1 year ago
@smokelakes The most messed up thing about the joke to me is the fact Elliott did kill himself by a knife. I wouldn't care if he called his music emo or anything but to make fun of someone's death is completely classless.
gotf 1 year ago
@gotf So you think Josh Homme, who respects the music of this man enough to cover a song of his numerous times, chose to specifically reference the man's suicide for a tasteless joke? Or is it more likely that he was being glib about the relatively depressing nature of the song by making the de facto action for suicide? So, Smith killed himself with a knife, would the joke have been better if he'd faked a noose instead? A
red157 1 year ago
@red157 I don't see this song Christian Brothers as sad or depressing at all. It'll be kinda different if h sung Neddle in The Hay of something. He could have just said that he thinks Elliott's music is emo instead of pretending to cut himself. I think the pretending to cut himself is tasteless because it hits Elliott a little too close to home. Josh Homme is probably a great guy but for those few seconds he was a complete asshole. It's just how I feel about it.
gotf 1 year ago
@red157 You don't know that he respects him. There are a lot more reasons to do a cover than just that.
Suicide evidence was inconclusive.
I think it's more likely that the fellow who looks like a douchebag and sings mockingly the song of a dead man he just wrist-cut in reference to that was indeed making fun of his death.
Hell, who knows.
Maybe he was just really fucking stupid and didn't realize the implications of what he was doing, and what you said is correct.
VincentPrice111 1 year ago
@VincentPrice111 "I think it's more likely that the fellow who looks like a douchebag and sings mockingly the song of a dead man he just wrist-cut in reference to that was indeed making fun of his death." Well you're wrong. Sorry and all that. Homme wouldn't cover a song of an artist he doesn't respect. And I don't think the suicide evidence was inconclusive. Dude stabbed himself in the heart.
red157 1 year ago
@gotf Hes not making fun of his death you fucking idiot. The song has a depressing mood to it, thats why he made the gesture. Why would he cover one of his songs and make fun of him? What would be the point of that? Some people are so fucking stupid.
anonbeliever1 1 year ago
@anonbeliever1 Read to the lyrics to the song you fucktard. There's nothing depressing about the song. How about you find what the songs about before you run your mouth dumbass. Elliott Smith has depressing songs and this isn't one of them. You're right some people are fucking stupid and you're one of them Asshole (T_T)
gotf 1 year ago
@gotf - Fair enough the lyrics might not be that depressing but a lot of his songs has a melancholy tone to them I think thats what Josh was alluding to. The same way someone might say about Radiohead or The Smiths (slit your wrists kind of music). I don't think he meant to be offensive or even thinking about Elliott's death when he said that.
anonbeliever1 1 year ago
@anonbeliever1 Sorry for me being an asshole. Elliott does make depressing music. Elliott doesn't even like people interpreting his music at all. I just personally believe that making a gesture to cut your wrist is going a bit too far and may offend people who had to deal with situations like that like Elliott has. It's just my opinion.
gotf 1 year ago
@gotf "Elliott does make depressing music" Other people disagree.
red157 1 year ago
@gotf "Read to the lyrics to the song you fucktard" That's not the only aspect of a song that someone can deem depressing. And Homme was obviously alluding to the perception of Smith in general as opposed to the specific song they were about to perform. One of my friends once referred to Smith as 'slit-your-wrist' music, and they weren't even aware of the circumstances of his death.

Porly62 1 year ago
I don't think any one other than Madeleine Peyroux should cover Elliott Smith songs. Ever. They're just not made for anybody other than a) Elliott Smith or b)someone whose voice is as godly as Elliott Smith's. I don't think the gesture at the beginning was offensive, just totally unnecessary and irrelevant to the performance. They didn't need to give a giant middle finger to everybody who misses Elliott. If they want to honor his memory, they should just play the fucking song.
playsguitarandsings 1 year ago
Josh wasn't insulting Smith! Come on, it's Homme, the guy just likes to rattle the cage and make people uncomfortable. He wouldn't perform an Elliott Smith song if he didn't respect the guy. IndustrialCinema 1 year ago
Unfortunately.
red157 1 year ago 32
@red157 I think the issue is that while Elliott DID have some bad shows, he was magical even at his worst. The way they treat this song is like an insult, to be frank. Elliott Smith saved lives with his music, and this is like a slap in his dead-face.
barneyfromblueshift 1 year ago
@red157 Fuck man, this is a great cover. I don't get what the flack they are getting for it is but when you see Eliot Smith live, he has this kind of off approach to his own songs too. I think this works and The Queens rocked this pretty damn well.

i like queens of the stone age. i love elliot smith. yeah, anyway this is just a really shitty cover of a great song. They choreographed it terribly and josh homme has no range. Watching him try to hit the high notes is painful to the eyes and ears.
cerebralpalsy123 2 years ago
Homme has no range? If you know QOTSA then you should be aware that one performance isn't the greatest example of his vocal ability. Hell, maybe he was trying to do his best Smith impression... I'm joking, of course. Slightly.
red157 2 years ago 8
@red157 a clear example of this is that i belive smith is using falsetto for the high note and homme is producing it naturally, anyway to be on topeic this version of the cover is shitty but the studio version on the era vulgaris b-side collection is purely awesome.
