This song is my favorite song, and i mean the Otis Spann version.
But i don't even bother thinking who'se version is better , i'm just glad that we have so many great versions by such great musicians such as Otis spann, Freddie king, John Mayer , Eric Clapton , etc...
I would say i am more a Clapton fan than a john mayer's fan, but i'm happy that he is keeping the style of music i love ALIVE.
@nellgwen48 No way man. just searched up both of those versions. cant even listen to them after hearing Eric Clapton's version. it is by far the best version ive heard.
This was a tribute concert to all his blues hero's just like the cd that he did in 1994 from the cradle to the grave!!! U should check out the rehearsal he filmed for that cd it's very cool!!!!! He sang Albert kings song born under a bad sign in the rehearsal it was sweet !!!!!!

John Mayer is another "pretender" that is trying to capitalize on the genius of real Blues players. John Mayer is watered down shit for watered down people. You want to listen to real blues? Listen to Joe Louis Walker or Buddy Guy or Son House or Albert King or Stevie Ray Vaughan or a couple of hundred other people that weren't these yuppie pretenders. It is shameful to see these pretender goofs trying to be what they will never be.
@guitarthroat You mean aside that he's a shit hot guitar player and good singer? Comparisons are pointless unless you're sitting around someone's living room eating Girl Guide Cookies.
@Sointula2 White people trying to say they have "The Blues" are bullshit. White people should write songs about giving other people the fucking Blues. That's the only reason why the old Bluesmen in the Delta wrote it in the first place. The slaves were brought here to be worked to death by white masters. Kind of ironic that the music that was spawned from that happening is so coveted and copied by all these Caucasian, rich, well-to-do "pretenders". Its a fucking sacrilege.
@guitarthroat Horseshit. Ok, some of it is horseshit, some not so much. For the same reason as the comparisons. Life isn't that black and white - pardon the pun. You can't possibly know the life experience of others. You are deluded.
@Sointula2 I'm black and was raised in Mississippi most of my life. I think it is silly when wealthy people try to mime my people's music. What the fuck do you know? Clapton and all the others are just silly white men trying to rip off our music.
@guitarthroat Everything changes all the time. Blues might have gotten it's birth from violated black people, but that's not the extent of it. Whether you like or not, it has grown into something else that isn't exclusively black, or poor or downtrodden. Slaves probably didn't sing 12 bar. They didn't sing about Jesus - or sing in english. Until it changed into all that. Things change. There's not one blues anymore than there's one snowflake. Still, your point is taken - and not lightly.
@guitarthroat@guitarthroat Both music AND emotion transcend skin colour. We are modern black people, we cannot hang on to this 'hate the white man' thing, it's too primitive. Do you realise we are in the 21st century? Not all white people are the same; it was uneducated, hateful people that advocated racial barriers. You are no better than them for keeping this trend alive. Eric Clapton's 4 year old son fell out of a window and died, if he isn't qualified to sing the blues then no one is.
@chickenandbaconclub2 what the fuck does his child dying have to do with anything? The southern plantation owners were not uneducated people. The vast majority of them were educated in the north and were fantastically wealthy. They didn't want to pay labor. I'm so tired of you silly fucks on here talking about "being qualified" to play blues because of personal tragedy. Clapton is watered down shit for well-to-do white people who aren't really comfortable around real black blues men
@chickenandbaconclub2 Clapton has made a fortune ripping off and copying real blues players. He has never written any original blues. It must be nice to plagiarize other people's creativity and pass it off as your own. And make millions of dollars copying obscure bluesmen's work. You want to talk about a fucking injustice? Him and John Mayer, KWS and all the white pretenders. They are trying to be something they NEVER can be. At least SRV grew up in Texas among the old guys.
@guitarthroat I don't know why you are so full of hate. All they are doing is playing music they enjoy. If personal tragedy doesn't allow one to play the blues with feeling then what does? What is the blues all about? I shouldn't have said 'uneducated' I should have said grossly ignorant and moronic.
@guitarthroat As for the charges of 'copying', blues standards are to be played by whoever wants to play them. The obscure bluesmen you mention would be even more obscure if people didn't still play their music. And Eric Clapton's style is unmistakable so I really don't see how your accusations off 'ripping-off' can stand. You are giving SRV (who is my personal favourite) more respect because of where he grew up? Sounds familiar, judging people in terms of where they are from...
@guitarthroat does this mean every classical musician that plays chopin, bach, mozart, rachmaninov, beethoven etc. are actually ripping off the respective composer?
andreas segovia played many bach pieces on many recordings and recitals and is one of the highly respected classical guitarists of the 20th centuary
disclaimer: I am a Eric Clapton fan and OF COURSE...i am talking about the vocals. when he gets to the guitar solo he takes of into the music...iLike.
I have seen a few folks comparing this version to John Mayer and some back and forths. I don't think John Mayer would even dare support any opinion that he played better............I think it was obvious he didn't even try. Clapton is too humble to comment and I think Mayer has a fair amount of humility himself. I would imagine John knows who the teacher is.
I'm reading more and more comments about Clapton's skill as a singer, and not just about his pre-immortalized guitar playing. Nice to read those. Clapton is nice . . . (hmm, how can I say this in a non-sexual way?) all around (?:).
most people hear the name "clapton" and the first thing they think is "guitarist", but this song more than proves that he is just as great as a vocalist
This song goes back way before Bessie Smith got hold of it in 1923. In it's first ever outing it was done by Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith got it from her. There's been many great versions but Clapton's playing on this is one of my personal favourites from him Ever.
Yeah I know Mayer is not in the ball game or he is trying to compete with him my favorite is Claptons version but man I'm telling you what Mayer is one of the best out there today probably THE best of his era and age I love him but just in my book I got to go with Clapton first you know ? But thats just in my book.....But they are both better than I will EVER be lol
mayers solo to this song is great but claptons blows the god damn roof off. I just love the contrast created between piano accompanied vocals and then the immediately intense guitar solo.
