kkk i was a joke .. is the height of technology perhaps more interesting than the D 3, or even hyper virtual space .. because we have become accustomed over time to imagine but in 3-D view in 2 D. But with these tools can be agile and mix the reasoning in a new plane interface ideas and quick actions.
@zoneykid It was written from the ground up / started from nothing. He's referring to the old Mac operating system, written in the 80's. Not the current version which is OS X and is indeed built on top of a Unix flavour. Check out Andy Herzfeld website Folklore for some great stories on the development process of the original Mac operating system.
"ui is the os," i dont like this statement, an os has a ui overlaid. an os is used to develop its ui?. these ui experiments are perfectly valid though, the idea of spatializing information is always interesting, there's reasons we use serialized languages though eg. having moved beyond cave-paintings to character based languages etc
@MisterDogshit Yeah, and after years of working like that you get a spinal disc herniation and a repetitive strain injury while the users of the new technology even do some workout by the way and stay healthy.
II'm observing that John is not a very good speaker. It seems as though he is constantly out of breath and not speaking in a comfortable pace. While the information is great, his presentation makes it seems rushed, perhaps forced. Hm? Maybe someone else with more professional speaking experience should have presented this. I say this knowing nothing of the man, only this video; which to me seems like trying hard not to choke or lose air. Flame if want, this is what he sounds like to me.
@ThaKingOfSting Never been to an Amsih community have you? They are not as ignorant as people believe. they are fully aware of the world around them. And, yes - they have the internet.
The hand is not precise enough. The future will consist of contacts in that will follow the eye movement and then add that the hand mouse, keyboard, and best of all voice commands. When you can tell your computer to "take that machine apart and find the circuit-board, now display it in 3d and e-mail the specs to Joe blow." When your computer says "done" after you finish your sentence then we may have something.
this is really interesting , but is it more efficient to work like that or to work with a mouse and keyboard , or even a touch screen ? workflow efficiency is something that it should always be considered
well, it basically is a touch screen. just without the screen. if you consider that these systems will become more and more precise, then they should do fine as a user interface. I agree with lanmancz, that wild gestures don't make any sense, but if it's something like apple's touchpads, magic mouses, etc. just with more precision and in 3dimensional space - then this is gonna be the future.
My daughter was just asking me if these types of interfaces were "real." Well, I've seen the future, so now I can confidently say, yes Ana, they are real. In fact, this how we'll all be eventually interact with the ubiquitous computing that will surround us. A fascinating look at the future of user interface that every parent should watch.
Well, no... the user interface and its programming paradigms both came from PARC. Apple basically attempted to copy both with the Lisa, and then cut a lot of corners to squeeze it into the cheaper Mac.
Half of TED talks seem to be about optimization, of energy, space, or time. So why do these interfaces always lead towards using more energy to use by moving your arms about constantly. Needing large screens, which are much more costly and require low resolution to become buyable. The reason the mouses replacement for laptops was a touch-pad is because it required much less movement. That is also why on the large-scale large touch-screens never sold well, and that also includes current tablets.
yup, but I see no commercialisation at all by now. The system shown can really improve ways we arrange our data by intuitive interfaces, every people, teachers, students, employees would dearly need it, but can you get it into market faster? Even Johnny Chung Lee did not make something near this. he would just make something finger-detection which is way not even a finger-orientation recognition thing.
@zoneykid Uh.. he was talking about the original Macintosh home computers, and the old (pre-OS X) versions of Apple's OS. Apple didn't switch to a Unix-based OS until the advent of OS X. All the previous versions, are, as he says, based solely on Apple code. Considering the Macintosh home computer came out in 1984 and OS X was released in 2001, his claim is correct...
@lanmancz imagine ur case linked up to a projector and a wall in ur house as your interface... i could certainly imagine myself sitting on the couch tossing documents around the wall....theres nothing more useful than having multiple images infront of you to see the whole picture. imagine creating mind maps on your wall, with such space comes more visible detail
@lanmancz That's correct, this way (the way which we see in movies) may require "warming up" your body before you use the computer! It is going to be a sport! They always show 3D cube of images, earth, complex graphics.. etc which look nice but they do not use real world scenarios, does this help in reaching the picture/file/information you are looking for more quickly? NO, it just bring more mess
It's only a matter of management if we want it tomorrow for everybody. The technology is here, but would they be as smart as as to sell it? not sure! They have to rely on the best managers to be as good as they were in inventing it.
I think the big issue will be for software design to embrace the technology. If the hardware for a '3D interface' adds, say, $300 to a computer's cost but only a few applications or games can take advantage of it, those systems won't sell and consequently, new programs will not be designed for that technology.
There is a big gap between being a novelty with a few obscure uses and becoming a universal standard for personal computers. But I hope it does become mainstream in the near future.
Good for these researchers, I find these new interfaces very impressive and I'll be excited when they come to market at a reasonable price...many, many ways to benefit from these technologies when you sit down and think about it!
although its amazing how far technology is going, i will never buy this. why? because sometimes the best way to change is to not change at all. i like doing things in two dimensions rather than three. evolution isnt always a good thing, also, i dont want to see the age of mouse and keyboard come to pass.
Um.... I don't think his idea is that great. It's much more difficult, but I'd rather have an A.I. computer. One I could talk to, and could interpret what I'm trying to do, and fill in some of the steps. That would be much more useful than a great big screen with stuff floating around on it. Could use one of today's monitors, and you would still be a lot better off.
I would not use this until they get it 100% accurate, it isn't worth risking work just to have you accidentally click delete and loose all of the work you do
Well the first thing needed is a monitor that can grab all the singles from the hand and input them into the machine But then when your windows Hang Up then what? Slow Motion Sign Lang?
@sesoma0 well considering a huge number of people are already using a system very similar to this in the form of the Nintendo wii 5 years may well be possible.
one thing is impressive because it does not requite alot of "what ifs":: Simply look at benefits of collaborative abilities ---such as shown with group working on CAD parts & at about 10:00 in the video... ..
---Saves TONS of REAL money & time
& traveling in resources-pollution,, because daily travel to meetings would be reduced significantly---imagine parts-designer in Chicago with manufacturer
Cute, but this is all useless in practice. It's too cluncky and confusing. No one is going to sort things in 3D, we sort in 2D because it's easier for our mind to grasp 2D and sort in it.
@Odenkay mmm how prophetic, IBM believed there was never going to be a need for any more than 2 or 3 PC's worldwide when they were first developed decades ago. I would be cautious making short sighted sweeping statements that stimy the technological progress of mankinds lust for the future.
@Odenkay .....u sound like ur basing that comment on factual studies but a key & tricky issue is that tests tend to focus on "if this is used in such a way, this is how we'll use it" type of attitude.
but such logic is like R&D that is limited to how many tests u can perform based on predictions of how the technology is *probably* going to be used----
SURE we want to debunk useless stuff---but u can always shoot down innovation based on limited useage--the key is try & try again.
@Odenkay Put a keyboard and a mouse in front of someone who has never used either. They will be at a total loss on how to use them. ATM sorting in 2d is easier because its all we have. People would obviously need to learn the new systems. And 50 years from now the kids will be laughing at there grandparents that cant move there hands around to work the computer.
@Odenkay Too clunky and confusing??? Not sure how old or young you are, but do you remember the first mobile phones? They were almost the size of a phone book, and weighed almost the same. Look at the cell phones nowadays. How small and light they are now. This is just the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised that in just a few short years, the technology improves so much that it would be just a small microprocessor "sticker" that you would put on your hands.
@SamSpade2010 lol obviously when made for home use this thing wouldnt take up a whole room. And your hands already do an interpretive dance to access your email, think about it.
Let's be more asinine shall we?... innovation is the key... if you don't like the technology, fine... don't adopt it... just sit your lazy ass back in your computer chair and zone out in front of your screen... the technology is not for you anyway... have fun getting left behind while the rest of us continue to progress in any way possible... you people are ridiculous
Why would I continue using slight movements of the hand with a mouse when I could flail my arms around like an idiot to control my computer like some character from a movie?
@Crefload Not just laziness, I'm disabled, I can use a mouse but moving my arms like that would be difficult and painful. I hope situations like mine are taken into account.
The first obvious use of this system would be to control the objects around your home. Lights, toasters, gas stoves, doors, refrigerators etc....There is no need for an "interface." The world is our interface.
@renesis317 Right, cause there's no issue at all with accidentally turning on your stove and unlocking your doors. What kind of interface does your fridge have? I pretty much just open and close it.
Exactly "teh worng" direction to go waving around like that, as if a cloud of bees where after you. Best thing is thought to computer to visual response, lets say a surgeon wants to pull up information on a hud during surgery, think it and its there. Fighter pilots may wish to take a quick review of the tactical situation, no way she can afford to wave around with both hands in an enclosed space while performing a tight manouver. Cybernetic electrode to nerve bridges is the way of the future.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yay, another retarded attempt to make user interfaces into gay-ass 3D bullshit. Seriously, think about how tired and cramped your arms would get after using this stupid thing for 15 minutes. Stuff floating up in the air doesn't work.
People here seem to have a REALLY hard time understanding the difference between a PROTOTYPE and a GOAL. Soon they'll all be using interfaces without hardware and maybe won't even remember their stupid comments.
I think they are too focused on a single vision, rather than actually looking at the practical nature of this and it's serious flaws. Somewhere down the line, this sort of technology will be there in some shape or form, but not like this. Such a system seems less intuitive than the keyboard and mouse. Clearly it will only achieve any utility once AI becomes a reality as well. This is just a tech demo. A cool one, but still... There's no way it's going to be practical in 5 years time... if ever.
Interesting point about the first killer out... Gamers are bound to take this technology on board from the first development of gaming integration. Endless possibility with this technology though! Exciting :) What would happen if all their research and information open source? It might have even been in stores by now if they had already had released it? ;)
@Undeterminable From a games design perspective Natal is trying to do just this but we've yet to see the results from that. It just won't include the gloves.
oh the irony. this man is talking about spatial awareness, but has set up his motion capture cameras so that he is obligated to turn completely away from his audience.
@TZMSocialEvolution Unless you're in america then the naysayers get the majority vote.
On topic, I am in a web design & Interactive media degree and as part of my education and chosen profession I have to keep on top of all these new technologies and ideas.
While I see the creative ideas and the interesting concepts behind this, all I see is a complicated Wii and it's a long way from reaching the levels of use he's hoping for
From a design perspective its clunky and needs a lot of work
@TZMSocialEvolution hah it was a joke on politics with the naysayers. :) Seems the minority gets the majority vote is basically what I was saying.
As to the clunkyness of it, I do agree it has a lot of potential to evolve. I do not, however, agree that his 5 year time period is when we will see this become a standard in every home.
@poster55 Ah, sorry. I deal with so many ridiculous comments and accusations as a member of the Venus Project that unless someone puts a :) or an lol after the statement, I think it's a serious jab. lol.
I never liked guessing time frames for when a tech will be "commonplace". For all we know, it could be 2 years, or 12. There are just too many variables involved when it comes to that, so in this, we agree.
It's easy to be a naysayer, the world is and always has been full of them. Luckily, they are largely ignored, and science advances despite their ridicule and condescension.
Just remember: The world is flat, the Earth is the center of the solar system, man will never fly, and there's no WAY we'll ever visit the Moon or travel in space.
Every advance of tech is a step closer to true human freedom, if we use the tech for that purpose. -- The Venus Project
The first killer app? Probably a music player, e.g. flip through your record collection, sort by artist, style, etc.

My problem with this is that he said Macintosh had it's own OS written from scratch.
OS X was not written from scratch, it is Unix(more specifically BSD) based.

@claudiocesario For five times the cost of a standard system. Maybe not, but expensive just the same.

SO wait... what I could previously do with a mouse sitting down I can now do standing up wearing gloves. Great!

Um.... I don't think his idea is that great. It's much more difficult, but I'd rather have an A.I. computer. One I could talk to, and could interpret what I'm trying to do, and fill in some of the steps. That would be much more useful than a great big screen with stuff floating around on it. Could use one of today's monitors, and you would still be a lot better off.

one thing is impressive because it does not requite alot of "what ifs":: Simply look at benefits of collaborative abilities ---such as shown with group working on CAD parts & at about 10:00 in the video... ..
---Saves TONS of REAL money & time
& traveling in resources-pollution,, because daily travel to meetings would be reduced significantly---imagine parts-designer in Chicago with manufacturer
in Asia and engineer in Germany, etc.

can you play warcraft with them power gloves? =D
GodKillerAtheist 1 year ago
Cute, but this is all useless in practice. It's too cluncky and confusing. No one is going to sort things in 3D, we sort in 2D because it's easier for our mind to grasp 2D and sort in it.
Odenkay 1 year ago
@Odenkay mmm how prophetic, IBM believed there was never going to be a need for any more than 2 or 3 PC's worldwide when they were first developed decades ago. I would be cautious making short sighted sweeping statements that stimy the technological progress of mankinds lust for the future.
5treefrogs 1 year ago
@5treefrogs ...well put;-)
robelicit 1 year ago
@Odenkay .....u sound like ur basing that comment on factual studies but a key & tricky issue is that tests tend to focus on "if this is used in such a way, this is how we'll use it" type of attitude.
but such logic is like R&D that is limited to how many tests u can perform based on predictions of how the technology is *probably* going to be used----
SURE we want to debunk useless stuff---but u can always shoot down innovation based on limited useage--the key is try & try again.
robelicit 1 year ago
@Odenkay Put a keyboard and a mouse in front of someone who has never used either. They will be at a total loss on how to use them. ATM sorting in 2d is easier because its all we have. People would obviously need to learn the new systems. And 50 years from now the kids will be laughing at there grandparents that cant move there hands around to work the computer.
whiteguypl 1 year ago
@whiteguypl ....YES, exactly.
robelicit 1 year ago
@Odenkay Too clunky and confusing??? Not sure how old or young you are, but do you remember the first mobile phones? They were almost the size of a phone book, and weighed almost the same. Look at the cell phones nowadays. How small and light they are now. This is just the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised that in just a few short years, the technology improves so much that it would be just a small microprocessor "sticker" that you would put on your hands.

@Odenkay That's what they said about the plane, rockets, computers, and cell phones. Just saying.

Why would I continue using slight movements of the hand with a mouse when I could flail my arms around like an idiot to control my computer like some character from a movie?
crixxxxxxxxx 1 year ago
wow. listen to the hate. i'll get tired? is that what you people think. get a life. would it be so bad to pull your fat off the chair.
Crefload 1 year ago 2
@Crefload Not just laziness, I'm disabled, I can use a mouse but moving my arms like that would be difficult and painful. I hope situations like mine are taken into account.
AarghGrr 1 year ago
The first obvious use of this system would be to control the objects around your home. Lights, toasters, gas stoves, doors, refrigerators etc....There is no need for an "interface." The world is our interface.
renesis317 1 year ago 36
@renesis317 Right, cause there's no issue at all with accidentally turning on your stove and unlocking your doors. What kind of interface does your fridge have? I pretty much just open and close it.

Exactly "teh worng" direction to go waving around like that, as if a cloud of bees where after you. Best thing is thought to computer to visual response, lets say a surgeon wants to pull up information on a hud during surgery, think it and its there. Fighter pilots may wish to take a quick review of the tactical situation, no way she can afford to wave around with both hands in an enclosed space while performing a tight manouver. Cybernetic electrode to nerve bridges is the way of the future.

yay, another retarded attempt to make user interfaces into gay-ass 3D bullshit. Seriously, think about how tired and cramped your arms would get after using this stupid thing for 15 minutes. Stuff floating up in the air doesn't work.

I saw Ubuntu!! Is this open source/free software then?
ttthttpd 1 year ago
I think they are too focused on a single vision, rather than actually looking at the practical nature of this and it's serious flaws. Somewhere down the line, this sort of technology will be there in some shape or form, but not like this. Such a system seems less intuitive than the keyboard and mouse. Clearly it will only achieve any utility once AI becomes a reality as well. This is just a tech demo. A cool one, but still... There's no way it's going to be practical in 5 years time... if ever.
thebuccaneersden 1 year ago
Interesting point about the first killer out... Gamers are bound to take this technology on board from the first development of gaming integration. Endless possibility with this technology though! Exciting :) What would happen if all their research and information open source? It might have even been in stores by now if they had already had released it? ;)
Undeterminable 1 year ago
@Undeterminable From a games design perspective Natal is trying to do just this but we've yet to see the results from that. It just won't include the gloves.

@poster55 What does geographical location have to do with it?
As an initial tech, of course it's clunky. Just remember the Ford Pinto? lmao.
TZMSocialEvolution 1 year ago
@TZMSocialEvolution hah it was a joke on politics with the naysayers. :) Seems the minority gets the majority vote is basically what I was saying.
As to the clunkyness of it, I do agree it has a lot of potential to evolve. I do not, however, agree that his 5 year time period is when we will see this become a standard in every home.
poster55 1 year ago
@poster55 Ah, sorry. I deal with so many ridiculous comments and accusations as a member of the Venus Project that unless someone puts a :) or an lol after the statement, I think it's a serious jab. lol.
I never liked guessing time frames for when a tech will be "commonplace". For all we know, it could be 2 years, or 12. There are just too many variables involved when it comes to that, so in this, we agree.
TZMSocialEvolution 1 year ago
It's easy to be a naysayer, the world is and always has been full of them. Luckily, they are largely ignored, and science advances despite their ridicule and condescension.
Just remember: The world is flat, the Earth is the center of the solar system, man will never fly, and there's no WAY we'll ever visit the Moon or travel in space.
Every advance of tech is a step closer to true human freedom, if we use the tech for that purpose. -- The Venus Project
