@Baureihe485 Thank you for your kind comment. I am really pleased this song & video has passed 60,000 views - I learned it in Wales a few years after WW2 - long before singing opera. Kind regards - David
All of us you have experienced love for one far away can relate to this song. I very much like david keith jones and these were nice picture to go with the song well done.!
it's an old Scottish folk song. trust me, my name is Bonnie and in Gaelic (Scottish language) Bonnie means pretty...like a Bonnie lass is a pretty girl...
@b017ni3 You have a lovely name. The etymology of 'Bonnie' is uncertain but it may be related to French 'Bon'. It's certainly Scottish and common in Northumberland. But sorry - it's not found in gaelic which derives from Irish. This music came from a reputable collection published as English songs. Being Welsh I'm not biased in this.
@Golfshooter No - it's an English song. Thanks for viewing. You can download an improved version (David Keith Jones) from iTunes or Amazon MP3. Regards - David.
@VoceVersatile I feel very embarrassed because I seem to have missed Scottish culture being subsumed by England as I was always aware of it being a Scottish folk song rather than an English one
@StijnX Thanks for your comment. This song is published in an English songbook which is part an award-winning series. The Scottish book does not include 'My Bonnie'. 'Bonnie' is a common Geordie expression. You can download this song from David Keith Jones iTunes or Amazon Mp3.
@VoceVersatile You are correct 'bonnie' is a common Geordie expression but it's also a common Scottish expression with the same meaning.which is beautiful or handsome which makes little sense as it isn't a colloquial noun but an adjective. It's commonly thought that the 'Bonnie' in the song is referring to Bonnie Prince Charlie who was exiled to France and was viewed as a hero by the Scots and as a traitor by the English.
@StijnX Thank you for your observations on which we agree. Apparently the title should contain 'is over' rather than 'lies over'. I hope you enjoyed this preliminary traditional rendering of which there is an improved version on my iTunes album 'Scotland the Brave'. Best wishes - David Keith Jones.
Disagree with raigekimaro about intonation, also a dramatic rendering will have vibrato. But I'm sure we agree this is a highly rated and successful performance.
@raigekimaru (Belated reply) Thanks for your kind remark on my voice. Attribute the vibrato to an operatic background and perhaps my age. My Bonnie is also on iTunes and Amazon under David Keith Jones. I'm pleased and surprised that a traditional version is doing so well on You Tube - simple but popular, it seems.
i dont know but im just gessing if a coffin was set on water it would float and people used to set body's in coffins out on the ocean for the wishing of the dead persons demand were they would ask to be set on the ocean to be set free, or i could be wrong or i think i watch to much movies

I was told by my mother who was a proud Scot that it was about Bonnie Prince Charlie.

the vibrato is WAY over done and it's pitchy, but the voice is beautiful (a tenor with a strong lower register. that's a first =P)

Thanks for viewing and your perceptive comment. The style was perhaps too classical but some viewers prefer a dramatic treatment.

What IS a Bonnie? and how does it lie over the ocean?
zepsticks 2 years ago
'Bonnie' means sweetheart. 'Over the Ocean ' could refer to a sailor or soldier overseas, or him thinking of his girl at home.
