  • very very good....beautiful musicality...that bridge!... those stabs..KIDS listen to this.... plse..

  • A song like this would scare the hell out of today's so called producers. It's simply incredible, well sung by patti Austin, very well arranged by The 'Q' himself, and played flawlessly by by some really marvelous muscians! To almost all of today's musicians, this IS music!!

  • I LOOOOOOVE THIS WOMAN'S VOICE...& SMILE!

  • This is Rod Temperton all day long. On the Bass.

  • @kevinmwsr It's Louis Johnson of the "Brothers Johnson" fame that is on the bass.

  • Das My girl Patti Austin rite here.Possibbly My favorite song by Her.Altho its Quincys song.1 of His best productions as well. This also cud have been Micheal Jacksons song as well.

  • yeah, Louis johson on bass guitar.

  • Dam, this could had been Heatwave song. Rod Temperton wrote songs like Lennon and McCartney, every song is God sent.

  • prom 1981

  • The genius of QJ + Rod Temperton - phenominal

  • Loving Manwell from faulty towers on guitar

  • Incredible live performance...hard to believe this isn't play back...which it isn't...just an incredible performance...

  • Cool. I didn't expect to see John Robinson (on drums.) He's one of my favorite drummers.

  • 1:09 TIGHT.

  • you are not truly a musician - until you can play songs like this - NOTE FOR NOTE.

  • Oh man, I love this song! Have not heard in years, brings back big memories!

  • YES! Now THAT is music! REAL music not synthesized everything including vocals! Just REAL MUSIC!

  • Q's awesome! Looooove Patti!

  • Anyone know what kind of bass that is at 0:14? And do those wooden-looking cymbals 1:18 create clap sounds or what?

  • @shizo668

No, this is wood. I made the same thing and it works: it makes exactly that "quincy" clap "CLLAAAAHHHH!"

Just screw some wood knobs on 2 plates of wood (to cutting bread e.g.) :))))))

  • the blonde backing singer is indeed peggy lipton (quincys wife at the time)

  • @cannonballcollins ..Although Peggy Lipton is / was his wife. This is not Peggy Lipton on stage.

  • Comment removed

  • I just have to ask: Is Peggy Lipton-Jones up here singing because she actually can sing or because she just happened to be married to the "Q"? She just doesn't look what I would call "comfortable" up here.

  • This song ,the Q out done himself, this is my farvorite.

  • This is such a feel good song. They don't make them like this anymore.

  • i feel like dancin! :)

  • Ouincy has had tremendous musical Influence in my life.

  • If I had the power to bring back the greats like Sarah Vaughn, Ella, and Austin, put them live on a stage with today's 'singers' and make all of them sing without any audio help, today's 'talent' would be laughed out of the arena.

  • There ain't music nor performances like this these days...Too bad One never lived to experience it.

  • This was on Quincy's "The Dude" album, which came out around the same time as MJ's "Off The Wall" album. This album is basically the musical aspect of a MJ album without MJ. The music and the musicians, arrnager, composer & others that made MJ a mega star!!!

  • @afrosensuous @afrosensuous Good point..as I said earlier, this is Q's "A-Team" and while Michael Jackson might have been the biggest star, Q and his "A-Team" were doing PRISTINE work for quite a few acts during this time frame ('79-'82): George Benson's GIVE ME THE NIGHT LP, the Bros. Johnson's LIGHT UP THE NIGHT, Rufus' MASTERJAM, and Patti Austin's EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE. Pops had ALL of those albums back then, and I SWEAR you can HEAR the SPARKLING SHEEN on all of them!!!

  • what date it is :D?

  • @ernest90s 1980

  • Wow what a nice guitar solo is that Carlos Rios he lookes like him also lefthanded!

  • True, another Rod Temperton gem. MAN that guy was prolific, and he some pure diamonds. Add Quincy Jones' arrangements, Patti Austin and a killer band. It's truly unfortunate, that this sort of music just doesn't EXIST these days. Even someone like Alicia Keys doesn't come even CLOSE.

  • Damn! She's good Live!!!

  • @maty7976321

You had to be good live in these days or you didn't work. Not like these talentless broads singing today!

  • Michael Jackson sung background on this song for whoever cares.

  • @chicagofootqueen No he didn't. He only sung background on The Dude.

  • Almost the 1st Jill Scott! I know somebody will disagree but to me every time I see Jill, I think she's filling Patti's

"void" as far as resemblence and expression. That's a compliment for both sisters!

  • diese Musik macht süchtig !

  • OMG, just so so good !!! I will be able to listen this music again and again until I'm sick !!!!

  • Patti is my Girl ...Hit after hit after hit...Wanna see her sing, " In the Heat of Heat "..where is that ? Anybody have a video ? Love you Patti...xoxo

  • I still have a schoolboy crush on Patti.

  • omg!!!! she gave me chills !!!! Patti can sing her tail off!!!! thank you for posting

  • This is truly a great live performance and one of my favorite songs from Quincy Jones. If you get a chance to listen to the album version from "The Dude," wear some headphones and check out the incredible harmonies during the chorus.

  • one of my top-ten favorite recordings.

  • Amazing song... Optimism and happyness all the way!!!

  • Totally heard Patti do this live at an outdoor concert last night! TOO great. I never ever would've guessed she still brings this one out at concerts after all these years, but man, it was hot!

  • Good Lord...Patti Austin! Truly one of the best female voices ever. If I had to pick just one voice to sing me to sleep it would be Patti Austin's. She has such a beautiful, soothing voice...

  • "We can make it better with a little bit of RAZZAMATAZZ!" I love that part! LOLL!

  • the legendary John JR Robinson on skins... killer!! Also, Louis Johnson is WORKING that bass in the beginning part. Pure music right here

  • oh my god! patti austin is so awesome and underated!! this is true vocal power that todays artists couldn't come close to!!

  • Love it

  • patti always the best!!!!

  • This song is from Quincy's album ''The Dude'' back in 1981. Patti Austin's vocals are always awesome.

  • awesome

  • I always loved this song, and Patti Austin has an incredible voice she is criminally slept on as far as great singers are concerned.

  • Wow what a tune and who is Patti Austin she has an amazing voice. Words cannot describe how much i adore Quincy Jones and i am 17.

  • Patti Austin is one of the best female vocalists in the industry. She is Quincy Jones god daughter. You should check out some of her r&b and jazz work. she has a very nice catalogue of music.

  • Thank you Quincy. Thank you Patti and thank you centrie. This made my night. I only wish that I was old enough to play the bass or trumpet for this gig.

  • Love her vocals, she can sing her ass off, go Pattie!

  • Evergreen Classic. I adore Quincy, my idol.

Thanks Quincy for your heavenly music.

  • joyful and uplifting, great vocals

  • Man,the days of GREAT music

  • Awesome! Carlos Rios kick a**

  • Wow, such a great song and LIVE!! Brill! I wish I was in this band!!

  • words cannot describe how awesome this song is to me it brings back the good times and lost loved ones that meant so much forever a fan

  • This is absolutely stunning! I was only born in 1980 my my roots are deep in this type of music...

How come today's world can't appreciate this type of performance?Maybe cause the lady is too big an possibly too old...

I grew up listening to QJ's classics and this performance just proves that his work is immortal. Please post more!!!

  • I feel you I love this song and I was borni in 1977 and i die for this music.

  • Man...I remember back in the day, whenever you saw Patti on TV she was never MOVING. There were a lot of folks that actually believed she was too heavy to dance, but OBVIOUSLY they were wrong. She could down then, and she can get down now (minus a few pounds to her credit). This is Q at his peak...with his A-TEAM (Temperton, Johnson, Philliganes, & JR Robinson). Those were great times!

  • damn patti killed this performance! she turned quincy into a fan of his own song, look how he jumped up from the piano...lol! im only 29 and love old music. when i compare singers of today and the past the ones of today aint got shit on them! to much puppets of money and fame instead of having artist whom has music in there heart and soul.

  • lmao! the white back up singer was lookin like she was lost with them sistas blowin over her!

  • Quincy Jones should've released this song as a single back in the day. IT ROCKS!!

  • Actually the song was released in '82. Peaked at #17 on the US R&B charts and #11 in the UK.

  • Even Quincy Jones was thrilled by Patti Austin's performance.

  • The clarity in her voice is amazing!!!!

  • thats class!i wish the crap that passes for music today had half the talent of these musicians!wow! music like this will never come again...thanks for posting

  • Magnificent!

  • This is hot. Listen to these arrangements and them blazing horns...and Austin's crazy vocals. I remember this song sooo many years ago. Another Rod Temperton hit.

  • Rod Temperton could seem to do no wrong back then. And Patti's vocals are phenomenal!

  • oh ..very good very good groove..

  • i was 11 yrs old with the dude album playing in my panasonic walkman. long time ago. i was a little sophisticated girl listen to the dude with a crush on james ingram. thanksfor the post

  • wicked

  • THIS is a performer. When you get tired of junk video and todays overrated female singers, watch this. Or better yet, have them watch it, they might learn something about real talent.

  • this is the jam, i play it evertime i come to youtube.

  • ANOTHER classic written by Rod Temperton. The composer behind such little songs as Thriller, Baby Be Mine (MJ), Give Me The Night (George Benson), Boogie Nights & Ain't No Half Steppin (Heatwave)...

  • HOT!!! Cool Groove!

I love when Patti does her hopping (3:53)

    cute; lol.

    Love her!!!

  • Yeah that hop is ultra cute. LOL.

  • HaHaHa @jim40135

  • Sorry, there aren't enough stars to rate this with. It's 5000 kilowatts electric. :O

  • Sing girl, go 'head!

  • classic

  • Wow, look at Patti go! This is awesome.

  • at the biggining it sounds like porn music. haha

  • Haha, yeah it does a bit.

  • I think i would've wet myself if i was at that concert! I would have been that excited, and young enough to do something like that too, heheh!

  • DAMN!! That was a hot perfomance by Q's band & Patti Austin (She was looking good onstage)! I also noticed John Robinson on the drums, too. He used to drum with Rufus & Chaka Khan back in the 80's.

    Great Video!

  • NICE TUNE, IS THAT A JOHNSON BOY.

  • what a dude..

  • I played "The Dude" over and over and over. One of my favorite albums ever!

  • WoW! I remember this tour!

  • This was a hit when I was entering high school.I've never seen a live performance of this with Q and Patti.Excellent, just love this song always brings me up.

  • I'm in my late 40's so obviously I got The Dude record.

  • another cruising song. i wish my husband would take me out on the town. at least till ten in the evening. he's always so tired.

    enough of that. doesn't

the song "give me the night" by George Benson

    give you the same feeling?

  • Absolutley. I recently downloaded both and listen to them often.

  • Definitely. Also The Manhattan Transfer's "Spice of Life."

  • how about love x love ?

  • I will pay to see this any day. Bump that so call music that's out today.

  • What happen to this kind of brillance and music.

  • Quincy is God-father to Patti is that right?

  • Yes, and Dinah Washington was also her Godmother.

  • Does anyone know what the line-up was here ? Guitar / Bass / Drums / BVs etc. ??

  • I know that the drummer is John 'JR' Robinson, formerly of Rufus featuring Chaka Khan.

  • on bass; Louis Johnson

  • guitar: Carlos Rios

    keyboards: Rod Temperton

    percusion: Ali Brown

BV's: Jeanet Tyler Vivian Cherry Peggy Lipton-Jones

  • I was 12 years old when this song was out, we had just become suburban and moved into our new house, Yeah not bad for a kid who had a brother and being raised by a single Mother. My best memory was of me in our basement and playing this record on our brand new HI-FI yes I said Hi-Fi Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh........The good ole days. Thanx for posting this video and Thank you Quincy Jones and the Fabulous Pattie Austin for a GREAT,GREAT,GREAT!!! SONG.

  • think I make it betta with a little bit of Razzamatazz...just learned that a couple of years ago after hearing this song for most of my lije...lol...

  • So did I! Never knew what she said there.

  • Holly Sh!t! I love this song. I love the entire The Dude album. I hav truly recieved a blessing now that I have seen this video. Ron Temperton(former Heatwave memeber wrote this song as he did for many of Quincy and Michael Jacksons hits.

  • Exactly nazuk1 error of my part thanks dude !!!

  • How can I get my hands on this live concert? This is amazing. I love me some Patti Austin. She is still doing her thing. I've been to 3 of her concerts this year alone and am schedule to see her in September. I guess I'm an Austin-ite.

  • Is Patti Austin not Patti Labelle!! Patti Labelle have a complete diferent style, Labelle is soulful and spiritual, Patti Austin is more pop disco.

  • What a great video, but it's Patti Austin! She is really great though.
