  • In retrospect the heart has been broken, but i expect the multiple breaks will be mine. I don't know much about love, yet I have still to know what love is. One is lost without love.

  • After all the souls that people thought were the subject to this song, It's become obvious that Carly Simon was certainly singing about Jim Morrison...Dan O'Niallain

  • BEST ALBUM COVER of All Time......I think I "achieved Puberty" when I saw it! What can I say? I was 12 or 13 at the time!

  • @texasgungeek Mick Jagger also featured on this song that I know for a fact, his

voice is also very audible on the original track,James Taylor & Carly were an item

all those years ago.Listen well you'll hear him inthe chorus singing the words you're

so vain(must have been refering to himself maybe).

  • Carly Simon more classy then all the rest.

  • aw all mick sings here is yo, yo , yo :O

  • I remember the eclipse which took place off the east coast Canada... July 10, 1972. Where did all those years go ....

  • @SkorpionOneOMG. Go suck a dummy it was meant as a joke, you got no sense of humour, while ur about it ask mamma not to forget your butt cream before she puts ur diaper on.Your lyrics are a hoot too I must say.

  • Really, what's with those fucking lips? Is she part mud?

  • @TheVoiceofresistance What? What the heck do you mean? RUDE, man. "The Voice of resistance"? More like "the voice of jealousy, so I'll be as insensitive as I can". Good job. Mission accomplished :-)

  • @Prismacolor1993 Huh? Take my nuts out of your mouth i can't understand you.

  • @TheVoiceofresistance Are you part redkneck?

  • @Johnnywhamo Just ask your mother Johnny. She'll tell you all about me.

  • @TheVoiceofresistance Wow, good one, I can see you're an obvious rocket scientist looking at you're comments so I think I'll just step back now least you taunt me a second time with your scathing wit. Bawahhhaaa

  • Carly has a big mouth, bet she gave great head ;^)

  • It brings me good memories of my youth, that's all, she was just OK, not that much good.

  • 46 people think this song is about them.

    A true classic!

  • Awesome song!!!

  • While this song is great, check out the version by "Faster Pussycat".

  • 46 people have clouds in there brains

  • The song hit #1 in January of 1973. So you were right the first time.

  • Beautiful Carly simon

  • 46 people are vain.....

  • Comment removed

  • For years people always said this song must be about Warren Beatty, but we now know this song was about James Taylor.

  • Clouds in my coffee...

  • 46 people think this song is about them

  • The only record my Ex-wife ever bought me, but we were young and i believed life was "just for fun" sorry sweetie. glad your life better now.

  • were are da lycrics o.O

  • Love, love, love this song..

  • Have a nice day Warren Beattey

  • But this song was about him...

  • This is one of those songs that I heard constantly as a child. Video killed the radio star, Inside out, PLENTY of 80s music... and yet it's what I like now. I'm not all super into Niki Minaj or Tao Cruz or anything.... and when I'm at various dances and somehting from the 80s or 90s come on, my friends stare at me in disbelief when I say " I LOVE THIS SONG!" (seriously, they have never even hear Come on Eileen!!!!)

  • I love how she got Mick Jagger to sing background (unfortunately I don't think he ever got the credit)

  • Classic Carly - awesome!

  • but i love this song

  • leona lewis does not look like her

  • Leona Lewis looks like her!

  • The cover was also my favorite, what 14 year old boy would not like it!

  • This was my favorite song from 1972 and one of my all time favorites. She and James Taylor did a great duet about this song. She is amazing and my favorite all time female vocalist.

  • Why can't music like this be made anymore, this song came out when I was 21 it seems so long ago, it is so long ago,but it is still as fresh as if it were yesterday.

  • @alchiby You're right on. "You're so Vain" is a great song in the past. Sometime I wished I could go back in the past and never come back.

  • @tiredlawdog Oh for the good old days, life was worth something then, people really loved oneanother, non of this garbage you hear today, songs made sense. Not like S.African group or should we call them zombies Americans going crazy for their rubbish

DIE ANTWOORD what a load of utter crap.To think they would make or could make

    a recording with Celine Dion,LAUGHABLE.

  • Great album cover!!

  • ur so vain

  • One of my old time favorites !!

  • Mick is singing the backing vocals.

    Awesome.

  • classic song.

And she used to look so good.

Not so much at nearly 70.

  • yes

  • Ahh the days of the early 70's Listening to this on the radio while riding to / from school with my 10th grade young, cool, teacher (carpooling due to President Carter's oil fiasco). Riding in a little VW bug . Thks. Good song...

  • @Jander4031 Carter was president in the late '70s.

  • @Jander4031 does anyone actually know who she is talking about. i have heard burt reynolds james taylor and even paul simon someone has to know.

  • @cshawnharris

    warren beatty

  • @cshawnharris heard this was about mick jagger

  • @cshawnharris warren beatty

  • great song t0put on at a party.

  • carly has a voice that i will never forget i could listen to her for hours and good looks to boot what a package

  • The spirit of the song in a line, the whisper at the beginning: SON OF A GUN!

  • the most beautiful smile ever

  • This is a good azz song!

  • for the conceited guys i've known hahaha...:P

  • umm...lyrics?

  • @porterbeer12

    lyrics are in the description

  • Do you think she was sining about James Taylor? They were a great couple!! Both very talented,,To bad James could not see it??? Drugs and hype,,Stardome Blues!

  • @dreamseeking The song is definitely about Mick Jagger. He sings harmony starting at1 minute 44 seconds into this clip. There is no mistaking his voice and it fits.

  • Love Jagger's vocals in this.

  • Awesome Song!! Carly wrote this song for Mick Jagger, who born was born on July 26, 1943

  • wonderful song, it used to make me smile, I still have it on tape.

  • There is something about this song that I never quite understood. She keeps singing that "you probably think this song is about you." But... the song IS about him (whoever he is).

  • @Marc3c The point is that he is so vain that he probably thinks this song is a compliment. The song is really about how she feels.

  • @SpitefulFrog Yeah but, compliment or dig, the song IS about him. If she was worried that he'd take the song as a compliment she should have sung, "you're so vain, you probably think this song is a compliment." Not quite as catchy though, I'll admit. Either way it doesn't matter... it's still a good song.

  • #573

  • Love Carly, whats with the Obamalamadingdong ad before playing the video? Dont come here for that BS....

  • I always believed that this song was written about the actor Warren Beatty. Hope I spelt this correctly. His sister was Shirley Maclean

  • I understand it to be about Warren Beatty, not sure why or if its spelt correctly

  • My understanding is that it was about Mick Jagger.

  • @basicaa Listen closely...Mick is singing backing vocals on this song. Not about him, though.

  • @PoppaBlue59 That was the whole point of it -- he was so vain that he either didn't care it was about him or didn't realize it

  • @basicaa Good point. I guess we'll never know for sure unless Carly fesses up. Cheers.

  • gotta love an entire song dedicated to acid and noone knows it :D

  • @WomanofLiberty i heard the song was about Warren Beatty.

  • @pdddddp1 I heard that the song was about James Taylor

  • @ellzedd41 i knew this song was about warren beaty

  • @WomanofLiberty Explain!

  • I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell.

  • She was calling them out way before Taylor Swift! lol

  • Reminds me of the movie How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days.

  • @Hereismytwocents2011 Reminds me of Boy Meets World "You're so vain you probably didn't even know this song before it was about you" lol

  • @Hereismytwocents2011 fun movie

  • Beautiful song, wonderful narrative in the lyrics, excellent bass & above all CS's rendition makes it perfect song like well blended Scotch Whiskey.

  • @NANDIKHANNA lol. I'll drink to that!

  • The song could have been about Warren Beatty, but it's about David Geffen -- the record company mogul. Definitely not Jagger. Joni Mitchell at the time, also wrote a song about Geffen -- I think it was "Freeman In Paris." Seems he ruffled many feathers.

  • @lastrada52 Was David Geffen straight when she wrote it?

  • @lizclegg - I don't know for certain liz. I don't even think that came up in conversation or in any published accounts. Geffen & Joni Mitchell lived together for a spell -- not sure if there was a relationship. I don't think it was known if he was gay during this period.

  • im so vain.. this song is just like me

  • Thanks ... brings back a lot of good memories ... Jerry,Charlotte, NC

  • I just learned that the back vocals were made by Mick Jagger. Listen Carefully

  • Now I am not sure I spelled the gentlemen's names correctly, but well enough. But I do admire that it is a song with a mystery, and of course she was once, and still is to me, one of the hottest women on earth.

You're so Bain, you'll probably fire this song when you hear it

Yu're so Bain, you'll probably send this song onto China

    Won't you? Won't you?

  • it is Warren Beatty she sings the song about, a small part is about Bob Dlyan.... My song, You're so Bain, may come out soon

  • For you ADEFECIO.

  • I KNOW WHO IT IS!!but *in songsongish voice*im not tell-ing! lol

  • If there's better rock/ballad, I don't know it.

  • according to "imdb" this song is about Warren Beatty.

  • She never said who she was talking about - its a collective & its bloody brilliant!

  • I heard this was about Rod Stewart....Hmmm

  • The ironic thing is that she looks like Mick Jagger.

  • Thought it was about Robert Redford.

  • The song is not about Mick Jagger. Mick is singing in the background. Every chorus you can hear his voice louder.

  • Awww the memories!

  • I married her...40 years later...She's happy now!!!!

  • yea we all think its about us lol

  • I KNOW THIS SONG IS ABOUT ME!!

  • @DARIUSSR612 actually its about mick jagger

  • @hotmn4u already knew that,(THATS WHY IT'S A "YOUTUBE COMMENT"!!)

  • @DARIUSSR612 LOL!!!! I knew you know that!!!!!

  • @hotmn4u I'm sure it's about her tumultuous relationship with James Taylor. He used to go to the horse races at Saratoga and actually took a plane to Nova Scotia to see an eclipse of the sun. I've also heard it was about Warren Beatty, but it's definitely James Taylor because of the lines of the song matching his actions so closely.

  • @hotmn4u is it? I remember her saying somewhere that the song had nothing to do with Mick?

  • @DressedNDecay I guess I was wrong again, I sure did think she said it was about him.. oh well

  • We always thought it was about Warren Beatty but it's got a Mick Jagger repetitious twang style inflection in the song.

  • Beautiful Song Carly!!!! An Awesome Classic from the 70's! :)

  • I'm so vain, I probably think this song is about me...

  • 1972 - love this song

  • well i think the song rocks and i love you

  • I'm Not That Vain Carly . . .

  • as little kids we used to think this sucked but now I know the story behind it I find it great 40 years later.

  • The song was released in 72 but was #1 in early 73 so both are correct

  • ohh irony. my english teacher would have a field day with this one...

  • her voice is beautiful and her face is too but it's kind off but I STIL LLVOE HER OMGG<3 ughh this song is soo good and i love the message!! ^-^

  • beautiful spuds nice comments

  • Spudcutter, your thoughts and insight make me want to cry.

  • You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you

You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you

    Don't you? Don't you?

  • You people are killing me with your responses.......... What a way to kill time :D

  • We know its not about James

  • Its probably about all rich ,arrogant males

  • 25 scrabble points for gavotte...

  • mick and carly ...bliss

  • Actually, the OP didn't really make a mistake on the date. The song was released in late '72, but went to #1 (in the U.S. at least) in Jan. '73.

  • It's about Warren Beatty.

  • Carley baby you were hot as a match in the 70's. Thanks for some great memories.

  • I was sitting in starbucks one day just after my man left me. This song came on and i was adding creamer into my coffee and i saw clouds. It changed my life. Now i own one of the biggest potatoe farms in denmark. I am trying to find the best formula of dicing and cutting them. HELP!

  • Its about 3 people, possibly none of them are famous. Maybe.

  • I fink its about Mick Jagger
