i was a saturday boy, ninian park cardiff soul days were good days, adrian alston, john bucchanan, dave bennett, carl dale, rob earnshaw etc, etc, etc good days
Every time I listen to this it takes me back to 1985 - it's as if he was sitting right next to me & making notes - unfortuneatley the note about the football team was true as well.
Yeah. For me it was a girl named Sarah Dowd. How funny that Billy describes a nearly universal experience, and yet most of us probably felt like it'd never happened to anyone else. That's folk music for ya.
One of my favourites in those days when I first found out the meaning of "unrequited"... and still rushes tears to my eyes more than twenty years later.
@Octavius0 - you're entitled to your views about Billy's politics, but you don't appear to have listened to the song. It's not exactly the Communist Manifesto - it's a sweet and poignant song in which a man reminisces about a schoolboy crush. It's beautifully done, unsentimentally and with humour, and it's something everyone can relate to - as is the case with a lot of Billy Bragg's songs. Maybe that's why so many people like him.
@Octavius0 why do you feel the need to do this, you have left the exact same comment on a number of billy's videos, great you fucking hate billy bragg, no one gives a fuck mate.
you know yourself when you think their listening ,now she knows the crack and how many bands signed ,now i have all the same on papper ,but the coat had been handled by all ,and i once had a photo taken with me and morrissey on the steps of blooms hotel dublin doing the same pose and twined hair dos ,it wasnt my camera and the next day a friend of mine, met the person outside one hour photo shop looked at the photo said wow n1 and didnt take a copy of same ,that gets me more upset than coat lol
he signed the the linen of me coat 3 times in the late 80s early 90s and took time to check out who else ? the smiths, echo and bunneymen, lloyd cole,slf,u2,simple minds, housemartins around 60 /70 signed names ,moved away from home as you do put coat away for safe keeping ? returned to find the kind mother gave it to a charty shop the linen was destroyed in that coat ,i was told ,well the lesson is memories are priceless and music is what matters ,i wonder how much the coat sold for?am still sick
It's disrespectful that a Nicole Scherzinger advert came up whilst Billy Bragg was playing. What's the world coming to, I am 14 and even I love Billy Bragg <3
Such a great songwriter. His lyrics for me are perfect, Don't agree with all his political rantings, but when he speaks for "The man in the street" like island of no retrurn and it says here, I couldn't put it any better. When it comes to songs like this, he has no equal.
For anyone who was unlucky enough to buy this album on the same day as their first serious break up, then the fact that after all these years i can still see her face will make perfect sense. It went back on and on the turntable all weekend. Thanks Billy, for both deepening and heightening my pain. 26 years later and i'm still not sure whether i should say thanks or regret the day i first heard a New England?
@zaybis Charming. What brought that vitriol about, or is that the upper level of your discourse? Part of me thinks, maybe I should explain further, but actually what's the point, you'll probably just reply '**** off you ****'.
Oh and by the way, my children view this. Is that the kind of thing that you'd like your children to see, presuming anyone would actually be as foolish as to want to procreate with a protazoa :) Love, peace and chill out. It's only you tube xx
@13Marmalade and which discourse would that be, you presumptuous cock-licker? if in the foucauldian sense, then please label it! if you're referring to a sociolect, then please enlighten me - who am i and where do i come from?from all that you've written, one gets the impression that you're a nerdy cunt. the only proper remark for your nonsense would be 'fuck off' as i had graciously provided. as for your children reading this, well, as an educator, i find it very proper
@zaybis So lets get this right. As an educator (doubtful), you trawl You Tube looking for people to abuse for your own self gratification. That equates to a six letter word and rhymes with 'banker' mate. You'd do best to remember that its better to have people think you're an arse, rather than open your mouth and prove it. And whilst we're at it provide your home address to the people you insult, instead of hiding yourself behind a pseudonym. We'd soon see who's the nerd. Your turn twat
1. educators and wankers aren't mutually exclusive groups.
2. do you not wank from time to time?
3. i'm aware of the respectable membership of your teachings in the hall of fame of eternal truths, yet i choose to sin and disregard your kind advice about keeping my mouth shut, even if it means i shall end up in hell..
4. i'm assuming that 13marmalade isn't a pseudonym, yet i wasn't able to find it in the phone book. please reveal first your home address, i'll follow suit.
Beautiful song. Billy Bragg can write songs about true love and they never sound corny or sappy. A criminally overlooked and underrated singer/songwriter.
@redrizzla1989 This is one of my favourite lines from BB song. Try Google or Wiki or, as BB did in the end, took out his dictionary.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Billy Ballbag spouting the same old tired, trite, hypocritical neo-marxist guff.
He is an irrelevant busker who does not practise what he preaches.
His politics are those of all the other mastercard marxists. He is an embarrassment for his 'music' and a joke for his 'politics'.
Bell-end wannabe communists who never grew up.
