I'm pretty sure this is on one of the SCTV DVD volumes. Anyway, it never fails to render me helpless with laughter--as does the entire Gerry Todd ouevre, the Mercury Players production of 'Murder in the Cathedral,' Sid Dithers, 'The Fella Who Couldn't Wait for Christmas,' Dr Cheryl Kinsey and on and on and on ...
Yes, in fact this is a lot funnier if you can see the entire skit it comes from. It's from a long sketch of The Gerry Todd show, and in addition to this and singing backup on a Todd Monroe medley of Petula Clark songs, Michael McDonald does a video for "Ride Like the Wind" where they imagine his life must be nothing but rushing from one recording session to another to sing backup on yet one more song.
Man I miss SCTV. Nearly 30 years later and there's never been anything even close.
a response to kingalow's comment. i think that is Dave Thomas as Michael McDonald of The Doobie Brothers not Rick Moranis. Eugene Levy is the voice over of course.
Well, we used to have the funniest shows on television. Now everything is basically the same, American and Canadian. British shows are still funny though!
@c3section : Ya there are some funny ones. But like all TV it is still hit and miss. There still is some godawful programming. However.. SCTV and Trailer Park Boys probably rank 1 and 2 as two of the top Canadian comedies of all time.
You're right - it's Levy as the announcer, but you can tell it's Moranis' voice singing as Michael MacDonald. Moranis was spoofing the Doobs later on this episode during the Gerry Todd Show.
Moranis sang a lot of silly shit on these shows - he was always spoofing goofy songs and serious singers...
Here's the proof: type Rick Moranis Michael MacDonald in youtube - it's great!
It is Moranis doing all the voices

I loved their local commercial spoofs !

This has been flagged as spam show
This commercial, minus the Doobie Brothers soundtrack, would have fit perfectly on KTXL-TV 40 in Sacramento circa 1980.

Sctvs improv based comedy tinged w/ heavy irony ..was a breath of fresh air for its time . Today , if your under 30 , you may not relate as much .

Not only do they get the Doobie Bros right, they get the low rent video quality of late 70's local TV commercials spot on.
