  • To me, this song is proof that Layne wasted his final years alone because he couldn't get over Demri's death. So sad.

  • yes you are so rigth

  • he sounded great even though he was at this point ravaged by his drug abuse and seriously depressed from the death of demri.still this sounded way better with layne singing it than if jerry had done it as originally planned for his solo album

  • Layne Staley and Mike Starr...love you forever!!!

  • 5:11 wtf

  • EVERYBODY SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN TO THE FUCKING MUSIC can a kid just PLEASE watch some alice without some dickhead starting a RETARDED argument over N-O-T-H-I-N-G

  • poor layne the love of his life demri was robbed by drug related death and he blamed himself and went downhill until he... DIED

  • Does anyone know what year the picture at 4:21 is?

Starr & Staley are kickin' heavens ass rite now. Horay.

Of course... Staley didn't ever believe in the afterlife, did he?

    *Falldown* 0_0

  • @IxAmxDataxDog i believe is like 1993-1994

  • THIS ONES FOR MIKE STARR

hope him and layne are in paradise..

  • Bro--did you ever stop and think that if Layne quit the heroin when his bandmates readhed out to him we would STILL have him here making great tunes w/AIC? Drugs don't make an artist what he is...we are born with our respective talents and hard drugs only RUIN our lives and hurt the ones we love. Stop gloryfing a deadly and sickening disease-I was there, I know what it was like to lock myself in a room with a set of works --the drug becomes your LIFE-music and loved ones take a backseat.

  • Ultima música gravada por Layne Staley antes de sua morte em 2002.

  • The new album is good but nothing without Layne. Duvall is good but he's no Layne. Layne was a god and the coolest around at the time. R.I.P Layne Staley

  • They haven't lost their sound, they are as good as ever. Just because Layne isn't there, doesn't mean they suck. Jerry wrote most of their music anyway. I am aware that Layne was a very talented singer and lyricist in his heyday, but on this song, he sounds broken.

  • ironically layne as well as alice in chains unique sound died after this song

  • Lol @ the arguments .....kick ass riff and kick ass band

  • Staley later expressed regret about the lyrical content of some songs on Dirt, explaining, "I wrote about drugs, and I didn't think I was being unsafe or careless by writing about them...I didn't want my fans to think that heroin was cool. But then I've had fans come up to me and give me the thumbs up, telling me they're high. That's exactly what I didn't want to happen."

  • how many of the greatests artists were doing serious drugs? coincidence???

  • Fuck Heroin...it's a stupid drug and if you use it your a moron....Here...put this loaded gun to your head and keep pulling the trigger and hope to god the bullet misses you.....i lost a friend to it and i still think about her...She had a golden ticket handed to her and she got on the wrong bus...RIP Layne but the life preserver was thrown..He just chose to drown...

  • Drug use is not funny. I have a friend who has his own band and looks like Kurt Cobain, people always beat the shit out of him for it. There anorexic Kurt playing his univox again, god he gets jumped a lot. So what does he do? He fucking shoots up heroin and then when people ask for his stupid demo tapes he says it's half done, but I have to pay back for rehab, but I'll go get some heroin now. He could be really good, but heroin is killing his life. Drugs are not cool get it in your little head

  • This is one of the last songs that AIC recorded with Layne. Knowing that makes it so much sadder to listen to.

  • liverpool needs to get glock 45'd

  • liverpool you dont disrespect a man and say u sold that poision to him, if u were in my neighborhood you WILL CATCH A BULLET IN YOUR BELLY.. trust me you fu cking fake ass, i dont have to hide behind youtube.dont disrespect aic like that pussy

  • hey liverpool u must be the stupidest person, to say you are a dealer, real men dont talk about that sh it unless u are getting high on your own shit. but you strike me as a person that steals 20bucks from there moms purse to buy a dime bag and gas for your ten speed fucckker

  • @liverpoollover13 are you proud of yourself for that?

  • i hope youre sorry

  • jaja i guess youre the most hatred guy by all aic fans now...

  • i really don't like those people who just want to get replies like

"yea man" because they write about how they love drugs. Well think again u know what they did to the man singing?

  • i got somthig you dident know, layne left aic due to band tention, canntrell wanted to sing more, layne said his voice was weak, and he did not want to aruge with them, the lable supported jerry singing more, layne did not like this,so he qwit the band, only doing a few shows, and the box set ,jerry never spoke about this and never will,

  • @flatbranch1 actually, jerry says layne told him to sing more because he wrote the lyrics. Layne said "you wrote this oyu should sing it"

  • isnt this the last song layne recorded before he died?

    (along with Get Born Again)

  • greatest voice in modern rock! power, pain and sensitivity, what else do u need?

  • How we miss him...

  • Ah Layne was so great! I still miss him...

  • Who cares how people discover great music.

    Dont be so elitist.

  • happy birthday Layne Staley!!!!!

  • nice video. cool pics of layne

    R.I.P.

  • It's actually Them Bones on GTA SA.

  • oh you're right it is them bones lol. Been so long since I played that game I got it confused my bad haha.

  • this first riff fuckin kicks ass!

  • I was thinking that maybe Layne came out of 'retirement' to do this for Demri. As obviously this song is for her.

  • retirement as in, wastin away on a dirty floor full of drugs? yup, thats retirement in the music biz. R.I.P layne

  • not sure what you mean. Layne's drug addiction deepened after these songs

  • This song is a great motivator..... For life or just anything in general

    lyrics really inspire me

  • this song gives me this chills everytime I hear it

  • same lol

  • and anybody who claims duvall sounds the same as staley is fucking tone deaf, give duvall a lifetime of drug addiction/smoking/screaming and he'd sound like a little girl screaming in a well, people dont understand that staley literally sacrificed himself for music, he lived a miserable existence to make something amazing, out of his struggle came genius, he sounded good while high and euphoric, and when drugs didnt have an effect on him anymore he rapidly died RIP

  • finally somebody that fucking gets it. I saw AIC a couple years ago here in Chicago, and it sucked. Duvall is trying to be a carbon-copy of layne, and failing miserably. I think it's cool that Jerry, Sean, and Mike want to keep playing, but having duvall there just does not work. He claims to understand the meaning of layne's songs because he's black, and therefore alienated. BULLSHIT. AIC died with Layne.

  • thats right AIC died with layne, they just need some money to put in their pockets. for shame

  • such a bullshit comment . all u fuckin stupid fanboys cnt just leave shit alone. layne isnt der but dey need a singer 2 keep goin its wat dey wnt. as long as d guys r happy with a singer then all fans shud b too. heres to many more years of alice whether it b duvall or andre fuckin bocelli dats singin

  • haha you know what makes that even funnier is that carbon is black.....lmao

  • how can you glorify drugs like that?

how can you think that led to a good thing?

no artist created because of drugs, but because of the creation itself, there's a ton of junkies on this earth, yet few rise like Staley. drugs do nothing. you just get high, and saying he sounded good while on drugs is simply idiotic. the drugs got him, that's why "didn't sound good", nobody can create while living in a dead mans body.

  • this.

  • that?

  • i agreed with you.

  • Oh :D

Most people would write I agree with you. :P But I'm all for diversity :)

  • You sound like a complete and utter ass glorifying drug use. Get a clue--the heroin ROBBED us AIC fans of this talented man. You don't need drugs if you are a musician to be COOL. Stop perpetuating the fucking LIE and STEREOTYPE. Layne became a mummy in his own home...alienating himself from his bandmates. It was a bad choice for him to choose addiction--where is he now? Not here making great music like this. If he had a chance now 2 come back and get OFF the needle...what do you think he'd do?

  • @Zillaman67 He would ask if he could barrow 15 bucks...

  • @Jozsus hell ya he would

  • @Zillaman67 thats true but without the drugs the music just wouldnt be there....that pain wouldnt be there....and thats why we love them

  • @beAVENeasy Yeah...it's the age old debate "They were better when they were on drugs maaaaan...COOOL..." Like Aerosmith, The Beatles, Sabbath, etc. Cantrell's voice dominates on the 'Tripod' album--why? Because Staley was so off on his doubling. Don't get me wrong-still a great album--but nowhere near 'Facelift' or 'Dirt'...by the time they were making 'Tripod', Staley was pretty far gone. Glorification of drug use in music is justt plain idiotic man--sorry.

  • @Zillaman67 not glorifying it thats stupid and immature and i used but without the dirt there would be no album DIRT.......no junkhead....godsmack.....rain when i die....you cant have both bud

  • @beAVENeasy Gotcha. I see where your your coming from-I can relate. As a recovering junkie, I just hate to see negative messages getting out there...you CAN be creative without using. I've been doing it for 7 yrs. now--not one blast of junk to my system. God knows--I've had urges. Emotional triggers are the worst. Andrew Wood passing away helped me get on the right track--but I still strayed a bit here and there. My daughter's birth saved me.

  • @Zillaman67 so agreed im so tired pppl think cu sif they do heroin they will write like thsi just saying .layne wrote this way not cus of drugs only because he had a deep down issue and was taleneted, doing drugs wont make you like that nor help your life only fuck it up we lost layne because of it and it suck's, be my guest do soem lose your life ,

  • @Zillaman67 Nah Thats Bullshit Heroin And Layne Were Like Batman And Crime Fighting Perfect Combo. Read The Lyrics Bro Since 89 Evrysong Was Bout Dope. Thats Why AIC IS THE FUCKING BOMB

  • @PlowThrough8 Nah, not every song...and besides, cantrell wrote more than layne ever did. The music was so good because every one of them was going through a hard time, thats why the musics so intense. Cantrell said that himself. Heroin is fucking filthy, never did anyone any good, same with craic. Makes u feel great for a little while and then catatonic despair when you come down, same goes for valium and xanax and shit.

  • @goatboy679 heroin is whatev for me. cocaine is 10x crazier. what is catatonic mean again. good comment though. LOVE AIC

  • @Zillaman67

He would do the exact same thing, he didn't use drugs to seem cool, as you say so.

  • @bradvuke I agree, Duvall is fucking trash. But i don't agree on your perception of what effect drugs had on Staley or his creativity. Staley himself said he never wrote anything or created anything in that state of mind.

  • @bigboss25262 DuVall is a very talented guy, people should quit hating on the guy.

  • @bradvuke if you saw him live before dirt you would know that he did NOT really sound good high compared to before his addiction really took over

  • @iknowmyus3rnamesucks This is the biggest lie..

  • @SczLegend hmm really? then i take it youve seen him live in 89 90 92 twice and 94 twice like i have? he still sounded phenomenal after a bunch of dope and smoking which is what i think makes him such a legend. but lets be honest he still sounded even better before that really took over his life

  • @iknowmyus3rnamesucks you just said the exact opposite of what you did before.. Lol... And idc how many times you've seen them, because that doesn't mean I haven't.

You said he didnt sound good until he did drugs

now you're saying the exact opposite. Make up your mind please?

  • @SczLegend read my first comment again dumbass. both time i stated he sounded better before he got really drug addicted. i said that he NOT sound good high (meaning later years) compared to before his addiction took over (earlier years) your comprehension skills are quite poor

  • @iknowmyus3rnamesucks Just because I read something wrong doesn't mean my comprehension skills are poor, and doesn't make me a dumbass you dickhead.

Btw, you're stupid, you just said the opposite of what you said before.

You just said that he didn't sound good after dope and shit.

Earlier you said he still sounded phenomenal after a bunch of dope and shit.

    MAKE

    UP

    YOUR

    MIND.

I'm starting to think you're just full of shit.

  • @SczLegend read my first comment again you fucking dumbass! do i need to make you a fucking diagram of it? ive never said he sounded good after a bunch of heroin. each time ive said he sounded better BEFORE he was consumed by addiction.

  • @iknowmyus3rnamesucks Wow, you're such a dumbass.

All you're doing is saying something different every time you comment.

Your first comment said that, then you said they sound good on drugs.

Then you said he sounded bad. Then you said he sounded good.

Do us all a favor, and kill yourself. Clearly if you were even alive in 89 you'd be a little more mature than cussing someone out over the internet over something that's completely stupid? We're all alice fans here. We shouldn't even be arguing.

  • @SczLegend im sorry you are right that i overreacted. but ive stated he sounded better BEFORE drugs every time. i can see how you were misled by me saying he sounded phenomenal after drugs. but if you continued on i said even sounded EVEN BETTER before that.

  • I was so in love with this scene and drugs that I too was on the same course. Only after my rehab partner who I went to a 4 month rehab with and my uncle(who was a meth user) died in a 4 month period over summer of 07, I knew i was on the same course if I did not quit. Layne singing about death was a horrific, yet eagerly awaited event. I knew I was going to kill myself with pills, oxy...only did heroin a couple times. This song gives me the creeps. If I heard this as the first song I woulde die

  • Layne died of a drug overdose in his apartment. He was all alone. After 2 weeks of no money bieng used his accountant got suspicious....and his mom Nancy and a police officer found his rotting corpse, which was mostly maggots and a puddle of body fluid surrounded by opiates and crack. Layne knew he was going to die from Facelift on. When Demri his girlfriend died, this utterly put the nail in the coffin. She died of endocarditis enfection in her heart from shooting heroin. Dreams do come true.

  • i heard that the heat was on in his apartment extremely high which sped up the decomposition, thats a seattle rumour to.. i used to live about 10-15 miles away from his alledged "apartment", i to was involved in the heroin/music scene in that area until i moved to l.a where shit is just fucked.. but this song makes me know for certain i'm on a one way ticket to the morgue.

  • After using the hard opiates for long periods of time excessively your body does not just crave the drug, it REQUIRES it to function. Dear Layne long passed the point of no return and the drugs no longer really even got him high anymore-they simply allowed him to BE. What a miserable reality. I know, I'm facing it. It is a battle that the earthlings cannot understand.

  • this was such a pleasure to look at. Thank you for posting and thank you alice for being alice. great to get to enjoy your musical talents in my lifetime.

  • This song stuffs me up, depressingly good.

  • Layne is an awesome vocalist but it should never be overlooked who the genius behind Alice in Chains is particularly on a song as brilliant this, so perhaps we should spend less time talking about his tragic demise and start looking forward to the new album -fingers crossed!

  • Duvall fucking sucks and so does Jerry

  • jmattbassplaya90, are you fucking retarded? The guys sounds like Dr. Dre, not Layne Stalet R.I.P. I had heard the guy singing, but never saw him. This is not racists either, but, immediately you can tell the guy is black, just from hearing him. You must be a jackass in high heels to think this guy sounds like layne. I have seen hundreds of comments on duvall and they all said that he sucks. All except for one or two. One was a video posted by a total rap gbanger idiot. Anyway, you are an idiot!!

  • Have you seen them live? Yes or no? If not, then shut up man because you have no clue what you are talking about. I`ve seen them numerous times(they are my favorite band) and every time DuVall has been amazing. Seriously. You can close your eyes at their concerts and they sound perfect. BTW, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU CALLING YOURSELF A FAN FOR IF YOU SPELL LAYNES LAST NAME WRONG?!?!!?

  • @7stringkiller and I'm sure you are so much better--right? How many gold/platinum discs do YOU have? You were most likely one of those haters who disliked Duvall before even listening to him. He does every early AIC song JUSTICE.

  • @7stringkiller Nooo?

  • well done. g8 video. cheers

  • nice video dude ;]

  • addiction is a scary place to be.

  • one of the saddest songs ive ever heard. great song, but just so sad. you can feel his pain as he sings Ooooo...oh ohhhh, my heart is tired of beating slow, and you can tell he was giving up. especially when you think its one of the last songs he wrote before completely being consumed by the drugs. R.I.P LS

  • yeah, well summed up

  • everything you said, plus it's about Staley's long time girlfriend Demri Parrott dying.

"you just up and left me on this rock all alone"

  • Fuck Getty.

  • well done, some rare pics Iv'e never seen before, very cool song choice, underated.

  • how many hair styles did layne have man theres loads XDXD

all of them looked good on him

what a singer and a man o yer and layne went into succlusion and he probaly said AIC wernt his friends because he did not want them to contact him

  • Did you get Steve's permissions to use those pics that he made? Cuz if you didn't then I'm telling him you stole his stuff

  • the girl on 3.56 - is that the singer from heart? its not Demri is it?

  • no no its not demri, besides if it was i think it would be layne hugging her dont u think lol but its not i think it is the singer from heart, im not sure tho

  • Thats the singer for Seventhsign.

  • yea that's def not Ann Wilson from Heart

  • This song is about his ex girlfriend Demri, RIP both of you.

  • rain when I die is may favorite when it comes to showing Laynes vocal range. Chris Cornell said after haering Layne preform thae song live that he never heard a person who could sing like that.

  • But if you are insane or on drugs you should go into rehab/psychiatric place because it is like summer camp.

  • OBVIOUSLY U HAVEN'T BEEN>>> U IDIOT!!!!! They won't giveya nuthin if u are an addict so it aint like you lay there in the sun all day getting methadones and shit and sum good ole H delivered to ya by a buetiful Layne wishhelookalike!

  • The only prob with drug addiction is everyone turns their liar backs on you. Like how everyone is calling Stevo a crack head. Stevo is a good person and is spreading love.

  • whos Stevo? and what exactly do u mean??

  • Well the members of AIC were no longer Layne's friends during the end of his life. They turned their backs on him. He spent the remainder of his social life hanging out at a bar all alone. It was called the Rainbow.

  • What are you talking about? He went into seclusion, they didn't turn their back on him. He was having tons of problems and wasn't talking to them or anyone else... you can't blame it on them.

  • One of his last interviews he told the interviewer not to contact the members of AIC because "they were not his friends". I don't speak misinformation.

  • it's true he said that, but how do you suppose his mind was at that time. In some other web sitess, it was stated that the other AIC members tried to contact him

  • Okay? Thats a quote from a near dead heroin-ravaged Layne. Do you understand point of view? When you only have one source thats biased you can't take it for what it's worth... you need other sources to balance it. We don't know the full story and we probably never will.

  • Layne isolated himself because he knew he was dying. His mother hadn't spoken to him in over 2 weeks. He didn't want help because he knew his life was ending. It wasn't the rest of the band's fault. It was Layne's choice, period.

  • Not true. Lanye was devestated over Demri's death, but they had broken up a couple of years before her death and remained friends. In Layne's final interview he said "I know I'm neath death . . . I never wanted to end my life this way" He didn't want to die to be with Demri. He just couldn't stop using - that simple.

  • first time I heard this song was last year and it freaked me out

  • CLASSIC...

  • This and "Get Born Again" are the bes AIC songs. Layne's vocal harmonizing is AWESOME.

  • layne's legacy is secure!

you just up and left me on this rock all alone..

  • Love this song, the guitar is great and the lyrics are awesome.
