  • Loved it! Great chugging of ALCos is usually not consistently throughout a clip but it was in yours. Thanks and great job!

  • i so wanna see one of those any of them still around?

  • @celica825 Try the Western New York & Pennsylvania, based out of Olean, NY. The Delaware-Lackawanna at Scranton also has 3 six axles but seldom runs all 3 at the same time. The WNYP runs trains daily with 3 or 4 of them south to Driftwood, PA

  • I didn't believe they were Alcos until I saw all of them spewing black smoke. Classic vid! Thanks for posting!

  • Nice, love the smoke. I have two CN C424's and two CN C630M's on the way. Why are they running the engines with the panel doors open. Heat?

  • Yep! These scenes were taken during a hot summer, and these units tended to run hot. One scene I have that is not in the video is a set of C424's pulling into Sherbrooke westbound after climbing the grade into town, with all the hood doors open. The engineer cuts the power off and all you hear is alarm bells ringing on all 4 units. A shop guy in coveralls was waiting for them to stop, and while the crew got orders he watered them and shut off all the alarms.

  • @fmnut neat, ALCo's are my favorite engines. My dad is from a railroad town in the Gaspe, New Carlisle. Many of my Great Uncles/ Grandfathers worked for CN or Quebec Oriental. My grandfather drove RS-18's, C630M's, RSC-14's, RDC's...

  • Great film! Hey, can you tell me where the 4563 is displayed? I have footage coming soon of her in revenue service, not looking so good either, glad she got a new paint job! THANKS Dean H.

  • Dean,

CP 4563 is at the Canadian Railway Museum at Delson, Ste. Constant, Quebec, just outside of Montreal.

  • Thanks for the info, that will be a great road trip this summer! Oh... does she still run?

  • I'm not sure if it has all the parts or if some were removed prior to donation to the museum. I don't think they would run it even if operable account being such a big unit for the museum trackage.

  • Darn it. If the wife and I made that trip, I would wanna hear her run or at least idle.... OK, plan B, ummm..... crap, got nothin...... Thanks for all your info though, your a good guy. Dean

  • Classic CP right there. Nice vintage footage.

  • damn... those fart out alot of smoke

  • u don't see cps like that anymore

  • was this taken in northern ontario like between Sudbury and Soo because i remember a car trip where a CP main lies right beside the highway for km's , awesome video

  • No, this was taken in the Eastern Townships of Quebec between Montreal and the Maine border. The line that you are referring to was CP and is now Huron Central. There are some similar stretches so I can see how you made the mistake.

  • @fmnut sorry its just that some of th shota look really similar , oh well my mistake

  • Thank you for putting this together, brilliant footage. The DD audio makes it complete.

  • Great footage. These old Montreal girls are beauty skin deep.

  • A tree hugers wrost nightmare...Alcos!

  • One OF My Fave LOCOS....Ummm

SWEET InDEED, Thanks Steve In Trenton

  • I also enjoyed filming the 4 & 6 axle CP alcos before "final" retirement in the mid 1990s down here in Grand Rapids, Michigan! Got plenty if anyone wants to see the videos! Yes, I used a tripod on all outings... I even caught 4711 LEADING a container train to Canada!! I will always miss the Alcos! HAMBONE

  • classic

  • lol the detector robot guy is the same today

  • I like how were fascinated by the train, and the 2 old cows could hardly care.

  • in the last moment of the video i saw the smal town of SCOTSTOWN IN THE TOWNSHIPS (Québec) nice vid thanks for sharing !!

  • Best smoke show I've seen. Reminds me of living in Lennoxville in the 70's and 80's!

  • great stuff, you brought back memories

  • Best Alco video I've ever seen! Fantastic smoke show! I used to photograph these when they were new, on the Belleville Sub., black and white stills. No movie camera with sound around 1967! Thanks for the "treat".

  • Left the doors open for easy access fire control?

  • One of my favorite memories from these trips (not shown on the video) was when a set of MLW's came eastbound into the station at Sherbrooke pulling their guts out with all the hood doors flapping. They came to a stop and the engines shut down, all you could hear were alarm bells ringing thru the sudden silence. A mechanic in coveralls jumped up on the lead unit and started tending to it. They were parked there for almost an hour until all the units cooled down and the alarms stopped ringing.

  • The doors are wide open, because they were literally pulled right out of the deadlines, and thrown back into service!

  • Love those diesel electric steam trains! Great vid!

  • Nice

  • that pacing scene, with the smoke...5 stars

  • Amazing that was a great video

  • yesterday I went to Magog on excursion train "Orford Express" Today all MLW are gone. Thanks for nice memories ! Where was the meet? at "shanks", qc or in somewhere in maine state ?

  • I'm not sure what the railroad name for the siding was, but it was near Nantes, just before you start down the long hill eastbound into Lac Megantic.

These trips were surely some of my all time favorite rail experiences. I have not been back since the MLW's are gone.

  • why are the side pannels usually open?

  • Because the shop staff and crews are too lazy to go back and shut them! After banging about in the wind the locking latches get broken and then you couldn't lock them shut if you wanted to! Sometimes we would open them if the engine began to overheat in the summer.

  • oh haha lazy bastards lol. and ya typical alco's, always having issues, weather it be overheating or what. but i still love them. lol

  • Awesome. This video is well done.

This is the good old days of the Canadian Pacific rail link remembered between Montreal-Sherbrooke to Maine and the Maritimes.

I remember to see a very long CP train in 1988 in the Eastman trestle bridge when I'm going to Hartford,CT with my parents in this time.

And I saw it while my father drives the car on the freeway 10.

Wonderful. I give you 100% for this video.

Amazing and I like the noise of these MLW engines.

  • haha wow look at all the black smoke at 1:00...you know what...actually look at it all throughout the whole movie! lol

  • NICE MLW

  • CSX comes out to Canada too right.

  • I know. Close for the CP bridge over the St.Lawrence Seaway. The CSX railroad track goes from the CP/CSX jonction to Syracuse,NY.

  • Close to Montreal Skynetdefensesystems.

  • Cool man, I'm working on my life time dream to become a CSX engineer, hopefully I'll get to chug a diesel like a SD-45-2 through Quebec or Montreal or something being that I live in NYC.

  • That's some very good stuff there! Too bad they're all gone from CP :(

  • i think theres like 1 or 2 left. not sure tho.

  • They are all gone dude - it sure was fun running 3 M630/636's uphill on a cold winter night. If you closed your eyes and opened the window you could swear it was a steam engine you were running! Didn't like the smell of diesal they left on your coveralls though.

  • no theres a video with one in consist in late 2007. ill send yu the link through PM when i get the chance and when i find it:P and another with 2 that just got repainted. and i can beleve it thos things sounded like they where chugging haha.

  • Send the link - I would like to see that one. Where on the system is it running? Must be near Montreal PQ I'll bet.

  • the repaint ones are in quebec but the one in consist was on the Mactier sub near Toronto

    heading north. i think :P

  • I always wondered why crews never seemed to like them. Seems like CN got rid of their's real fast! I first started photographing the CP's new ones around 1967 on the Belleville Sub..they were awesome. I always heard they pulled great, didn't slip, and rode smoother than EMD's. They sure earned their keep hauling ore trains on Cartier Railway, when well-maintained.

  • from what I heard they were loading problems and they were constantly having the door open because they were heating up too fast

  • Pure MLW/Alco heaven! Your video killed me right from the start with a view of the turning bridge in St-Jean where I live now. Many thanks for sharing such a wonderful video!

  • Awesome glimpse back into the past! Alco at its finest, i cant believe CP ran pure alco consists as late as that, wouldve been a real site to see in person. Thanks for sharing, 5 stars!

  • Great video!

  • Awesome vidio! greatest smoke show that i have ever seen! 5 star & favorite!
