AmaterasuOmikami, her full name literally means "The Great Goddess that shines in the Heavens" Yes, in the female gender specificly.

Much before capcom created Okami, Amaterasu was depicted as both a wolf and a heavenly maiden throughout all of Japan's history/mythology. Her game itself mentions by many times Ammy is a girl if you actually played it.

I only got to play this game for about 15 mins at my boyfriend's brother's place. I attempted to play as Amaterasu, but I sucked at it. I suppose it just takes a little bit of practice to the the hang of how to play the character properly.

Your conception of gods don't necessarily count for someone else's conception of gods, so you're thought of all gods being genderless doesn't mean that Capcom has to apply to it. Plus, it is HEAVILY hinted in Okami and Okamiden that she is female. When you free a god, they call her "The mother to us all". Issun CONSTANTLY calls her a she. They say she's the birth MOTHER of Chibiterasu. NOW try to tell us she's not female.
