  • The Gorn is on steroids

  • THE CHEETO CANNON!

  • Way back in the seventies they did "novelizations" of all the episodes in paperback, and I remember reading this episode and it had a different ending..The Metrons did not intend to destroy the "loser" of the contest...they told Kirk after he had spared the Gorn's life that they were going to destroy the winner..as the winner would have proved more dangerous and resourceful.

  • Any time there are red shirt guys, you know some or all will get it. Unless it's Scotty, the red shirts always get it.

  • I want to see kirk fight godzilla now.

  • Redshirt Hurley (sp?) can see almost 1600 yards . . . Fascinating!

  • Hey, there is no credit for the Gorn! Who played that part? I bet he was famous at Trekkies' conventions!

  • planet of the Gays?

  • the guy is strong but he doesnt seem to be very smart

  • The Gorn = A pumped up Sleestack

  • @ghost2171 AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YUP!

  • Spock couldn't pick up a damn thing on that old AM radio...

  • won't play on Mobil

  • Locked up 2 more times. What the fuck!

  • Why does Youtube have the video just suddenly lock up and quit?! Get your godamn act together bitch!!

  • Oh know this is the episode with that "Awesome" Fight! This is one of the Greatest of all Time fight scenes.

  • family guy sent me...the episode where meg does the news internship, didn't see the coffee mug

  • 28:50 Spock rolls his eyes. Ahahaha.

  • warp 7 in star trek is = to ludicrous speed in space balls!!! .. lol

  • @camp168 Sir shouldn't you buckle up first?

Ah, buckle this. Ludicrous speed, GO!!! -Moments pass- What have I done?! My brains... Are going into my feet.

    ...

    What the hell was that?!

    Spaceball 1...

    They've gone to plaid!

  • Oh no, not the diamond-eyed lisp-lizard! This episode was clearly written by Ishiro Honda.

  • What's Godzilla doing in Star Trek?

  • @coolrag, I completely agree. Kirk pwns.

  • this is old he he

  • I still say Ned Beatty would have made a great Captain Kirk.

  • Nor do I however the real lesson is never trust someone who has so much power than is so wimpy!

  • Why Isn't Scotty on the bridge during that fight??? Typical Kirk to be micro-managing ship operations from the surface.

  • they did this scene on mythbusters. the bamboo cannon exploded and killed "kirk" but not the cardbord gorn

  • @l0papercranecutie0l I have good explanation for why Kirk "Died" in that test. They put him in a Red Shirt. If that had not happened then it probably would have worked.

  • Hey kirk, dont forget to ask the Alien for his papers!!

  • I, like most humans, have an instinctive revulsion towards over-sized, doll-eyed, cackling reptiles. I must fight to remember that this intelligent, highly advanced, though very fake looking captain of a starship is just the figment of a writer's imagination. His cackling and hissing creeps me out whenever he feels as though he has won over a weakened Kirk. Methinks this was not a good episode to watch before bed.

  • William Shatner seems to love rolling around.

  • I'm sick of all these pedantic douchebag aliens.

  • If "Balance of Terror" and "Day of the Dove" got together and procreated it's baby would be "Arena" It feels like two distinct episodes wrapped up in one. The beginning reminds me a lot of BoT where an outpost gets attacked by a mysterious but powerful assailant and then suddenly the episode switches gears on you by turning it into omnipotent aliens playing moralizing peacemakers (of sorts). Weird! But in a way, the conclusion really ties it all up together nicely. Great writing D.C. Fontana!

  • Fan made star trek game based on this episode free download at the project is re-creating all original series episodes into adventure game format startrekadventures com

  • Hey, YouTube, you're really good at playing commercials; but the videos I want to watch? Not so much. Everytime I load this one, I get the TBS commercial, then the Dell commercial, and no video. I'll watch your sponsored videos if they actually work, but I would appreciate if they, y'know, I dunno, worked.

  • @bapyou you are an idiot. star trek is AMAZING...you are just too stupid to see it. go back to your "lost" "heroes" "office" "chuck" and all the other unoriginal crap...star trek will always DOMINATE

  • 6:31 EPIC ROLLLLLLLL :)

  • The Gorn's eyes don't blink.

  • I am so sick of hearing about the foxy line...

  • The Metrone looks like a gay boy from West Hollywood.

  • I have to say, as someone with a degree in Earth science, it is extremely unlikely that anyone would find the materials Kirk gathers to create a weapon (nitrate, native sufur, diamonds, coal) all in one locale. At least, not on Earth.

  • @bapyou. Youre right, that is why it is not on earth. Werent you paying attention? Plus, it was a test; the Metrons wanted to see which species had a greater understanding of mechanics, and chemistry.

  • @bapyou

Hey! That's Captain James Tiberis Kirk! He can do ANYTHING!

  • Great new book (Did these stories really happen) at amazon! Book has Shatner dedication!

  • So did anyone else say "STRIKE~! when Kirk hit that Gorn with the rock? haha

  • Good episode, albeit corny.

  • Star Trek is the SHIT!!! XD

Who dosen't like it i will kick their ass!!!!

  • Starting at 27:08, the Gorn shows greater intellegence than Kirk by keeping quiet and listening as Kirk discusses his own vulnerabilities.

  • Correction: Greater acting ability than SHATNER and his acting by doing that.

  • 24:43 did the Gorn really just do that?

  • Worst Fight Scene. EVER. XD I LOVE STAR TREK.

  • Does anyone notice the tin foil at 25:35???

  • Oh, look...shiny rocks!

  • That Gorn is slower than my grandma!

  • How does that work?

It is still smoking after several days????

  • It is very possible:

Back in 2001, I left on a business trip the sunday after Thanksgiving. My connection was at Newark, NJ. When we landed, we could see the ruins of the Twin Towers, still smoking, nearly 3 months after 9/11.

  • Burning the Evidence.

  • At 27:32 Kirk seems to think a lot of his fighting prowess "already he has withstood attacks from me that would have killed a human being." :)

  • I liked this one because it did bring up something seldom seen in the original series ,namely that the Federation just might be partially at fault. In all too many episodes, they were just too saintly.

  • I hear audio but a totally black screen....too sad, when will it be fixed?

  • is it just me or do the recorders they gave kirk and the gorn look like lightsabers, that would have been a good fight

  • much agreed

  • 48:24 Aww.

  • This is a great episode.

And it teaches a good lesson:

Never wear a red shirt when going onto an alien planet. You WILL die.

That is why none of my shirts are red.

  • @wolfpredator2007 Worthless. You should be wearing a red shirt.

  • @cutis1000 Red Shirts are actually Tactical Officers, But they also have way of Dying...

  • dam i thought teenage mutant ninja turtles were suppose to be faster than that

  • Maybe we should have proposed to the babes sooner!

  • tv producers got lazy at 1:18

  • they a new tv show ..

  • best. fight scene. ever.

  • Kirk always volunteers himself for the dangerous missions. LOL

  • kirk:who should we send down?

    spock:how bout a red shirt?

    kirk:ok

    (2 minutes later)

spock: captain the red shirt died

    kirk:s!@#

  • Figures 4:14 the red shirt guy is first to die.

  • @undead890

LOL yeah those guys seem like they end becoming target practice for aliens.

  • @undead890 I'm having trouble figuring out what happened to him. I mean, how did he dissapear like that all of a sudden? Or should I wait to see how that happened?

  • @caitlinjane92. I'll explain. First the cameraman locked the camera in place then the director told the actors to freeze in their places. Then the cameraman stopped the filming the actors stood still and Shatner walked off the set. Then the cameraman started the film up again, the director waited 5 seconds then yelled "ACTION. That is how the captain disappeared.

  • @BondFreek I didn't mean how he was able to disappear based off of the filming technology they had at the time. I meant to ask how did he disappear in the episode, like, how did the villian that they face make him disappear. But, I watched the rest of the episode and eventually got my answer. Thanks for the technical information you gave me, anyway.

I can tell you're a big fan of this show, since I've seen other comments you've written in other episodes here. :) How long have you been a fan?

  • @caitlinjane92. Sorry, my scene of hummer can be misread as demining and rude behavior. I have been a fan since I was 6 years old in 1974, thats when I was finally allowed to watch it. The first episode I was allowed to see all the way through was The Trouble with Tribbles.

  • I love Spock's facial reaction to almost anything McCoy says :D

  • Parts of this episode remind me of Willie coyote and the road runner.

  • Jeez. After watching the first 10 minutes of this episode, no wonder Nimoy, Shatner and Kelly all damaged their hearing. Look how close they are to those explosions! Talk about your underpaid actors!!!

  • 28:48 Does Spock almost roll his eyes in that shot after McCoys comment??

  • @ 4:42 Whats up with the Ghetto shot of the Enterprise?? what is all that crap on the Enterprise??

  • Especially for the fight scenes on the planet, wouldn't it have been funny if Captain Kirk had been played by Ned Beatty?

  • Ned could have killed the Gorn by jumping on him and smothering him with blubber.

  • best trek episode ever!

  • lol @ the Gorn, he was really pissed with the captain keep running away ! "STOP RUNNING!" hahahahahahahaa

  • OMG warp 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you beam down with Jim and your not Spock, Bones or Scottie your dead meat!!

  • LMAO, typical redshirt at 4:16.

  • Some humans ARE still half-savage. My stepfather is primitive, superstitious, and barbaric. He fries meat in butter, traps animals for furs, and sings corny songs like "The Big Rock Candy Mountain". He's a Minnesota Finnish Lutheran backwoods hick.

Even though here we are in the 21st Century of the Third Millenium A.D. he is a Neanderthal. The Metrons would NOT think man is ready for ascension judging by a such a boor who is a warmongering "shoot first, ask questions later" churl.

  • @dakotagerman1 LMAO

  • @dakotagerman1: He sounds like my kind of guy.

  • You can't be serious?!??

  • @dakotagerman1 : I am serious that it would be a good laugh to watch; however, it probably would have killed the series. I like to joke around.

  • Trek at it's best!

  • Lol.. 9:40ish could see somebody walking by shadow wise lol.

  • Every time I read the word 'Gorn' all I can think of is that LOL Cat thing where the little hamseris like 'I has a corm.' I do not know why.

  • This is B.S. Who are they to interfere in the Federations defense of their space? They were about to kick some alien butt when these idiot alien elitists interfered. What is the Universe coming to?

  • They are NOT! "elitists" but advanced spiritual beings who are maintaining peace in their space. Primitives like man and the Gorn are not welcome to engage in their petty conflicts in teh Metrons' space.

  • The Gorn looks a lot like my mother in law.

  • I love these so much

  • DavidWood... Really?

  • Notice the mistake when they first beam down. The control panel sliders are pulled down. But that is for beam up, you push the controls down to retrieve and up to transmit.

  • Sounds like you used to work in the transporter room.

  • Ha ha. It's really funny cuz' it's always changing. Sometimes it's up, sometimes down, sometimes they pull down and then back up. I think in almost all the previous episodes though they do like I mentioned below.

  • It would seem more logical and easy to remember if down was down and up was up, eh? lool

  • they have stopped and went plaid

  • IM A NEW TREKY! welcome me!

  • welcome

  • welcome aboard and watch the series to your hearts content.

  • totally

  • Comment removed

  • "you bet your pointy ears i am"LOL

  • there is noting more exhilarating than to see the Gorn do that classic spin when we 1st meet him on the planet. And kirk looking at him and .......... lol..........i cannot imagine kirk thinking anything less than................."HOLY SHIT !" lol excellent episode !

  • Gorn has the funniest vocal effects for any monster ever

  • 40:09 omg! it's frankenstein! lol

  • Comment removed

  • Kirk and McCoy sound like a couple of gossipy old queens at the beginning of the opening scene.

  • tht is halarious

the monster doesnt even try at 24:45

    lmao

  • i know lol he's so slow!

  • Those poor Redshirts...

  • The redshirt guy is always just there to show you how the "monster" works.

  • I'm certain someone has already mentioned this.. notice the shadow of a person walking by at 9:39. It almost qualifies as a blooper, but may be way too subtile.

  • could be a dust cloud from the mortar blocking out some sun...sound logical?

  • @HowieT85 Sorry for the delay in replying to your comment. Your logic, as always, Mr Spok, is impecable. LOL. Could be, bro.Pretty cool whatever it is. So, I haven't had much time to look at YouTube lately. Did they take the Star Trek episodes off here? You'd think I'd be tired of watching them by now.

  • The commercials STINK!!

  • why dose the red shirt allwase die

  • 23:52 kirk says he is on the surface of an asteroid. with blue skies?

  • What makes a blue sky is sun rays going through oxygen, and he was able to breathe, so there must have been oxygen. I got confused at first too :).

  • The Gorn's reaction at 32:30 after Kirk pushes that boulder down on him is priceless!

  • I like how everyone crouches down when they hear there is an alien near by!

  • how did the coal and the other substances not follow out the other side of the log?

  • Bamboo is chambered on the inside. Thing rings you see on the outside show where each section ends.

  • so that's how the minerals stayed inside?

  • they say when the gorn squeezes you, you will fart

  • the doctor is hilarious!

  • I think this Episode is the best of 'em all , the Gorn's are kick-ass , just protecting there territory thats all , even to this day I'd not want to meet up with a Polarian Gorn in a dark ally somewhere...LOL

  • Where the hell is the coffee mug?!

  • just because i said that doesnt mean i didnt like it, besides, so were most fighting styles, long before this

  • As a Martial Artist, the begining of that fight was the most dpressing thing i've ever seen...

  • cut it some slack,it was made awhile back xD

  • sooo with you on that 1......

  • honestly, you have to admit it was sad on both parts, but then Kirk kicks ass and i still love the whole thing, calm down

  • didnt they go warp factor 10 a few episodes ago?

  • The Gorn almost won a senate seat in Minnesota.

  • Classic Trek.

  • The Gorn seems to have some really sharp teeth,Why doesnt it just bite Kirks head off?

  • Glad to see that Brook Shields is staying relevent.

  • 'I won't kill him...ya hear that, you gonna have to get ur entertainement elswhere"...that was a low blow jack, if I were the metron, I'd kill kirk just for making me look bad

  • and that why your not one in there words your still too savage

  • (at tnhl)

    EPIC WIN. =D

  • It's stuff like that that makes TOS great.

Might doesn't make right. Someone can be powerful and mighty, but still wrong.

  • Is this the "remastered" version?

  • noope

  • The Gorn is the coolest creature on Star Trek, apart from the furry monster that the mind alien turned into.

  • Did you know they are in Star Trek Online as a playable race /w the Klingon Faction?

  • 4:05 - the reason you never wear a red shirt while searching a hostile planet.

  • i dont get it....

  • the red shirts always die

  • heh, rly?

  • Yep, the only ones that havent are Scotty and Uhura, although Scotty has come close a few times.

  • what is with the gorn being so impossibly slow?

  • 4:05

    deffinition of mr. expendable

  • Like a science fiction version of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.....only with more unnecessary rolls on the ground 5:49

  • For all the people who voted my comment about McCain down (-4), I apoligize.

  • "You bet your pointed ears, I am!"

    Lol. Good one, McCoy!
