  • I never really thought of that before. Wouldnt the bands coming from the bottom basically do the same thing for the top part of the lift? You wouldnt be able to use as much weight like you are using them like this obviously, but it would definitely strengthen that last few inches of the push.

  • @guitarfreak585 - bands from the bottom are great, too - they're more targeted for explosive training. They serve to decelerate the bar so that you don't get inhibition from the muscles - when using normal free weight, part of your energy is spent slowing the bar down to prevent injury. Band training from below helps lessen the impact of it, allowing you to power right up to the top without that problem.

  • Actually a common way of overloading...going past your old limits physically and getting your mind past the old number works like magic. Or you can use spotters for power assist.

  • ok guys yeah when your 16 benching 300 or more is pretty insane, but i know a kid that benched 325 when he was 15, this kid is huge, its not impossible but it is unlikely, and i know a 15 year old kid who did 410 on deadlift so 500 doesnt surprise me... ha im a really small lightweight and can only bench about 140-150

  • Funny, but you're missing the point of training with bands. The idea is to reduce resistance at the bottom (when the bands stretch)...when you press up, the bands don't assist as much, matching the strength curve of the exercise. In a standard bench press, you can only lift as much as you're capable of at your WEAKEST point. Using bands allows you to lift at a higher level of resistance because you're matching how the leverage in the exercise changes...harder at the bottom, easier at the top

  • Holy shit you were right. I put big rubber bands on and I could bench 600 pounds in one work out. That's a 200 pound gain in one training session. Who needs roids when we can just use giant rubber bands.

  • I'm using bands that are equivalent to about 80 to100 lbs of help at the bottom, full stretch position. Be equivalent to "medium" bands.

  • negatives are excellent, too. Found this to actually work better since it accounts for the strength curve of the bench press, weares as straight-up negatives have the same problem as regular bench - you can only use as much weight as the weakest point of the exercise. Weighted dips are excellent, too.

  • Do you follow Louis Simmons? West Side Barbell is impressive. Do you like the kettle bells hanging off a fiberglass bar from mini bands to help rehab shoulders? Do you like the clubbells for shoulder reahab? I want to get a 405 lbs bench raw but I keep getting into shoulder pain that comes and goes now it is slowing me down.

  • West Side is excellent for sure. The bands and the kb's can be good as can clubbells - just gotta be careful you don't get too crazy with instability training for shoulders. Have you tried joint supplements like glucosamine, msm, etc.? Also, rotating in some dumbell work helps a lot.

  • Just do negatives. easy and works, also for increase in bench do weighted dips and vary incline and decline bench.

  • yep, it really does work and works well. The reverse style is great for improving your lockout, if you have trouble with that. It also helps load your connective tissue because you're able to use more weight. Finally, it's just downright fun to be able to put those extra plates on the bar and fun is an important part of weight training!

  • it's like no way can any 16 year old bench 315 pounds which is 140 kg, I've been training 10 years & I'm strong as hell but I can't bench that much & will openly admit it, & the guy above says he can deadlift 525, thats 200 + kg & even olympians can't lift that much at that age lol, it's ridiculous, I think they're maybe missing a decimal, maybe 31.5 pound bench or 52.5 pound deadlift, that sounds more like it, at 16 I could bench about 45 kg lol

  • Dude Kevin Levrone is a former Mr Olympia competitor who's still huge, & he can only just bench 370 so no friggin way can a 16 year old can bench 300 + on a flat olympic bench, if you could you'd be in the olympics for weight lifting so it's all BS, I think they mean 300 pounds on a bench press machine with a weight stack which in reality is probably about 150 pounds lol, and 300 deadlift at 15???? DREAM ON LOSER!!! I can't even do that & I'm 25 & bigger than you'll ever be!

  • ok, whatever you say, i was just saying there are people out there that can do that stuff at that age, and in our freshmen class last year for football, we had a couple of kids doing a 400+ deadlift, and size doesn't matter, and go ahead i would rather you be bigger than me any way, i would rather be able to run a mile in under 6 mins, and have a cut body, so go ahead be bigger no1 cares. and i know people who are built and can't bench more than 250, so that doesnt matter either.

  • Well perhaps they can, like most of the n00bs i see @ my gym that do the movement halfways with 100 kg (around 16-20 years old) . They dont take the bar down enough + they only do like 5 reps max... then they look themselves in the mirror thinking of how strong they are. LOL. Movement must be done completely. I agree with you , 315 pounds for a 16 years old is IMPOSSIBLE unless you're a hercules.

  • Oh, I would never claim to "normal" bench 400. This band technique is something that's also used by powerlifters to train the top portion of the bench. You get assistance at the bottom but as you press up, you take up more and more of the resistance. Bands are also used from below to train explosively. Very effective stuff but definitely not basic "normal" training. What fun is normal! :)

  • why don't you just use less weight like normal people. I see that form as a way to try and brag about benching 400, of course with the assistance of bands lol.
