Great performance, nothing to say about it. Please check out the underrated version of a truly great, but apparently underrated guitarist: Alvaro Pierri (based on the numbers of views he gets on youtube).
finally the version i wanted to hear! i believe this was the correct tempo for it. alot of versions i hear are pretty slow so the chord changes dont flow correctly but this hits it on the nail. knows when to slow it down and when to speed it up. a composer who truely understood the artist. bravo! lol i love this shit!...if only i would of disciplined myself and never picked up the bottle hahaha 5/5 thumbs up video! perfect!
Wonderful, if JW shows the mastery of Barrios than this is its truly magnificent beauty..Gosh i have been playing this song for 1 year now and i can't get my hands of it:)
well a raised fingerboard has it slightly elevated. Making the higher octave register a lot easier because it has more ground for your thumb to anchor upon. It helps with the high notes, 3 octave scaling, etc.
Actually the fingerboard hasn't been raised so much as the top has been lowered, exposing more of the next and fingerboard. It's kind of misleading that they call it a "raised fingerboard" but oh well.
Its when the sound board is slightly angled near the fretboard to allow you to play in the upper register easier, some also say it allows the sound board to resonate better.
Barrios is great...(so is Russell) and I must say that I have huge amount of respect for the people of Paraguay who put Barrios (and his guitar) on their currency.
@chairlift0 Agustin Pio Barrios Mangore was born in my small town ..his family did not have money to bring him back to Paraguay so he was burried there... soon he will be resting .in the country he loved so much
We feel very proud and honored in El Salvador since Master Mangoré taught and lived his last years here. I studied plastic arts (paint)at CENAR (National Art Center of E.S.)back in 1990 and many of my classmates had to learn some of Mangore's master pieces so they could graduate from the classical guitar specialty. That means that we have a few skillful guitarrists around here but as unfortunately usual they have no opportunity since there's no support coming from any way.
If Mangore could have heard Russell. he would surely thank him for bringing his music to life. this is how he would have wanted it to sound. beautiful!!
@keman25 there is a difference between a great guitarist and a great composer. A composer is not necessarily a master of the instrument he writes for..:)
@falafel1100 That is true, but wouldn't Barrios have played it differently if the piece was meant to be played differently? He was a great guitarist and he probably had the technical skills to do so. After all, if there's a "correct" way to play a piece (I don't think there is one), it's probably its composer the one who knows how, isn't it?
(I am not saying that David Russel's version is bad - it's actually one of my favourite interpretations of this piece!)
@keman25 I can agree that a "correct" way to play a piece is a matter for individual likings and interpretation. However, if a composer has a piece of music in his head, not always can he express it best while performing. It is much like thinking and public speaking. In my opinion, Russell's version is the best I've heard so far. I like your challenging comments...:) are you a guitarist?
@falafel1100 I deeply admire Barrios playing style ( /watch?v=le0shPMLffY ). Although it's very unconventional and simple,it carries a lot of emotion. I think that with his performances he was able to deliver the emotions he wanted. His version and the one by David Russel are my favourite. Besides, have you ever heard of Berta Rojas? Her way of playing Barrios is absolutely brilliant ( /watch?v=jt4-Mvbc3NI ).
And yes,I study guitar at the music university, although I haven't played this piece yet.
I find it so amusing to hear so many experts rattle back and forth about who's better than who....la di da. I try not to get into the he "is" better than than him scenario. Why not just say I prefer this guy over that guy? When it comes to art, who has the handle on what is "better" than what! Such arrogance!!
YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS...SIIIIIII...SIIIIIIIIIMMMMM Y en cualquier idioma... maybe I prefer Williams but I cannot say Russell is not as good as Williams both make me feel in the air when i listen to them.
Padrino879 i dont know how the hell can u say John Williams plays with no soul. And Russel is DEFINITELY not better than Williams! Both of them have unique style so u can say which YOU like most but that doesnt make him "best"!!!
David has been on top of his profession for a good fifteen years or more. I saw him for the first time in about 1989/1990 and even then, I couldn't think of a finer musician on the guitar.
how dare to say that John Willians is better than David Russel, John Williams is a machine playing the guitar, because he plays it with out feelings, David Russel is way better than him, he plays the guitar with feeling and soul, so don't be saying that Williams is better than Russel

wow...stupid and arrogant too. so what if you played guitar for 28 years..maybe you played it the wrong way.
it is true that longer nails produce a more metallic sound but how cand you critize someone like David Russell so easily. He is one the guitarists with the most beautiful tone ever. But as a good friend of mine says "oh well, these amateurs...".

I don't know how you guys can judge his tone from the awful sound quality in this recording. That being said, I am a big fan of Julian Bream due to his excellent tone control. Russell, Parkening and John Williams are all brilliant players, but when it comes to tone Bream is king.
Russel is a outstanding player, however, I personally don't enjoy that much the sound of guitar produced by long nails. Unfortunately, Russel has long nails. Shorter nails leaving some room for flesh too, would give warm and mellow sound, especially for this Barrios Vals #3 tune.
