  • El se llama David Russell.

  • Grande Guitarrrista

    nao ha palavras para descrever

  • When I spoke ot him after one of his concerts, he told me his guitar had a raised fingerboard.

  • from a certain angle, i think he's using a guitar with a raised fingerboard

  • Comment removed

  • What are the results of a raised fingerboard, why would one use it?

  • what exactly is meant by a raised fingerboard, first off =)?

  • well a raised fingerboard has it slightly elevated. Making the higher octave register a lot easier because it has more ground for your thumb to anchor upon. It helps with the high notes, 3 octave scaling, etc.

  • Actually the fingerboard hasn't been raised so much as the top has been lowered, exposing more of the next and fingerboard. It's kind of misleading that they call it a "raised fingerboard" but oh well.

  • Its when the sound board is slightly angled near the fretboard to allow you to play in the upper register easier, some also say it allows the sound board to resonate better.

  • they called "millenium fingerboard" -spruceorcedar- has written why it is used.

  • It is a dream. I love the version by John Williams too, but it's just magic. No words, just emotions. I prefer mr. Russell`s version.

1er embajador maestro!!! QEPD

  • UN GRANDE MANGORÉ ( paraguayo tenía que ser )

  • Barrios is great...(so is Russell) and I must say that I have huge amount of respect for the people of Paraguay who put Barrios (and his guitar) on their currency.

  • mangore es de paraguay amigos

  • I love this piece.Barrios ...greatest guitar composer

  • @classicalcircle agustin barrios (mangore) died on my country and his buried on my country EL salvador

  • @chairlift0 Agustin Pio Barrios Mangore was born in my small town ..his family did not have money to bring him back to Paraguay so he was burried there... soon he will be resting .in the country he loved so much

  • What a wonderfull piece. Agustin Barrios Mangore writes such great and grand pieces.

  • i didn't really like his recording of this but this vid is much better

  • Enyone can me explain how to play this accelerando in 1.15 and 1.29 ?

  • haha, he tried to write in italian

  • Barrios has no easy songs. U need a lot of practice and technique...

  • We feel very proud and honored in El Salvador since Master Mangoré taught and lived his last years here. I studied plastic arts (paint)at CENAR (National Art Center of E.S.)back in 1990 and many of my classmates had to learn some of Mangore's master pieces so they could graduate from the classical guitar specialty. That means that we have a few skillful guitarrists around here but as unfortunately usual they have no opportunity since there's no support coming from any way.

  • i can't say anything...it's magic!

    not music,something better...

  • This valse is beautiful

    EXCELENTE DAVID

  • Toca bien el hombre. This was nicely played.

  • que gran limpieza!

  • If Mangore could have heard Russell. he would surely thank him for bringing his music to life. this is how he would have wanted it to sound. beautiful!!

  • @cheechee1111 I think Mangoré hears him alright, he is even smiling from his grave!

  • @cheechee1111 Are you sure that this is how Barrios would have wanted the piece to sound? Then why is Barrios own recording completely different? :-)

  • @keman25 there is a difference between a great guitarist and a great composer. A composer is not necessarily a master of the instrument he writes for..:)

  • @falafel1100 That is true, but wouldn't Barrios have played it differently if the piece was meant to be played differently? He was a great guitarist and he probably had the technical skills to do so. After all, if there's a "correct" way to play a piece (I don't think there is one), it's probably its composer the one who knows how, isn't it?

(I am not saying that David Russel's version is bad - it's actually one of my favourite interpretations of this piece!)

  • @keman25 I can agree that a "correct" way to play a piece is a matter for individual likings and interpretation. However, if a composer has a piece of music in his head, not always can he express it best while performing. It is much like thinking and public speaking. In my opinion, Russell's version is the best I've heard so far. I like your challenging comments...:) are you a guitarist?

  • @falafel1100 I deeply admire Barrios playing style ( /watch?v=le0shPMLffY ). Although it's very unconventional and simple,it carries a lot of emotion. I think that with his performances he was able to deliver the emotions he wanted. His version and the one by David Russel are my favourite. Besides, have you ever heard of Berta Rojas? Her way of playing Barrios is absolutely brilliant ( /watch?v=jt4-Mvbc3NI ).

And yes,I study guitar at the music university, although I haven't played this piece yet.

  • sonido impecable

  • David, you are one of the most dazzling guitarists around and you are so sincere. I love your playing.

  • "...douche"

  • lorenzocame I cheked your playing (Natalia)

Envy and ignorance always seek to make comparisons and unintelligent comments.

    You MUST work very, very hard on yourself;

    that'll help your playing.

    Peace.

  • I find it so amusing to hear so many experts rattle back and forth about who's better than who....la di da. I try not to get into the he "is" better than than him scenario. Why not just say I prefer this guy over that guy? When it comes to art, who has the handle on what is "better" than what! Such arrogance!!

  • Right on!

  • Why talk crap about guitar players that play better than you?

    Stop, and look at yourself.

Both williams and Russel are great musicians, so cut the crap.

    just enjoy the music.

  • YEEEEEEEESSSSSSS...SIIIIIII...SIIIIIIIIIMMMMM Y en cualquier idioma... maybe I prefer Williams but I cannot say Russell is not as good as Williams both make me feel in the air when i listen to them.

  • agree xD

  • Padrino879 i dont know how the hell can u say John Williams plays with no soul. And Russel is DEFINITELY not better than Williams! Both of them have unique style so u can say which YOU like most but that doesnt make him "best"!!!

  • David has been on top of his profession for a good fifteen years or more. I saw him for the first time in about 1989/1990 and even then, I couldn't think of a finer musician on the guitar.

  • how dare to say that John Willians is better than David Russel, John Williams is a machine playing the guitar, because he plays it with out feelings, David Russel is way better than him, he plays the guitar with feeling and soul, so don't be saying that Williams is better than Russel

  • No offense but some of you are crazy critizing the tone of sound that seems to be taped years ago (size of the bow tie) and then transfer over to swf/flv. It is like critizing how the techno bass sucks while listening to AM radio... =P

  • john williams play this piece better than Russel but there no full video of John on Youtube

  • Barrios, died in misery...enriching our lives with such beutiful guitar pieces! Can some of the connoisseurs give his/her opinion on NiKita Boldyrev interpretation of this piece? it is a studio recording, but I'm still interested on hearing from you.

  • wow...stupid and arrogant too. so what if you played guitar for 28 years..maybe you played it the wrong way.

it is true that longer nails produce a more metallic sound but how cand you critize someone like David Russell so easily. He is one the guitarists with the most beautiful tone ever. But as a good friend of mine says "oh well, these amateurs...".

  • " Jitpring, please don't lecture me about the art of the classical guitar, I play that instrument for 28 years on a row. Russell's sound is notoriously metallic and that is due to his long nails. It is harder to play guitar with shorter nails, a combination between a nail and finger flesh.

    "

  • Still not working. Is there any way to fix this?

  • david russel t amoooooooooooooooooo

    by uno-piu-figo-di-te@hotmail

  • Wunderschön....

you guys should simply listen to that wonderful music and not discuss about his nails!

if you really listen to it, you aren't able any more to have a row!

  • excellent

  • Russell is a legend! He was the first person which inspired me on Antonio Lauro's compositions.

  • I don't know how you guys can judge his tone from the awful sound quality in this recording. That being said, I am a big fan of Julian Bream due to his excellent tone control. Russell, Parkening and John Williams are all brilliant players, but when it comes to tone Bream is king.

  • Amen brother! Ditto that!

  • i love this music

barrios' music is some of my favorite in the repertory

  • Amazing version, for me the best on youtube!!!

  • Brilliant but nowhere near Pierri's interpretation!

  • Russel playes precise and clean with only some minor mistakes.

What I like best is that he plays without almost any sratches and ugly moving finger sounds like many others.

His musical performance is inspired and I enjoy his interpretation.

    Great player.

  • Russel is a outstanding player, however, I personally don't enjoy that much the sound of guitar produced by long nails. Unfortunately, Russel has long nails. Shorter nails leaving some room for flesh too, would give warm and mellow sound, especially for this Barrios Vals #3 tune.

  • muli99, you obviously have very little understanding of tone production. I suggest that you begin with Duncan's The Art of Classical Guitar Playing, wherein you'll see that warmth is not a function of nail length.

  • Jitpring, please don't lecture me about the art of the classical guitar, I play that instrument for 28 years on a row. Russell's sound is notoriously metallic and that is due to his long nails. It is harder to play guitar with shorter nails, a combination between a nail and finger flesh.

  • warm tone has nothing to do with nail length, just the angle in which it hits the string. Russel can produce whatever tone he wants, trust me.

  • You've played for 28 years? Tone has to do with the angle of the stroke. It is harder to play guitar with shorter nails but shorter nails have more accuracy. Long nails might produce a bright sound or "metallic" but David Russell can play with warm tone regardless of the length.

  • David Russell and all those guys who have longer nails have notorious metallic sound. I am not saying he's bad guitar player. He is one of my favorite guitarists!

  • I know what you mean. Jitspring is a retard. He called Yamashita a circus clown because of his "expressive" playing. Yamashita is incredible

  • You have no right to say anything on Youtube after criticizing a virtuoso such as Yamashita.

  • I would just like to say that mull99 has no idea as to what he's talking about. Also I have sat in on a master class with Russell and seen him live, and I have no idea what you mean when you say he has a 'metallic' tone.

  • I saw him in a master class on Saturday, it was great.

    and no, not metallic.

  • i also play with long nails, as does my teacher, and my teach always goes on about how warm my tone is :) so muli99 no offense but i think u have to rethink ur 28 years knowledge of tone production

  • I actually like playing with short nails, but I think it has a lot to do with the shape of your fingers and how they're built and whatnot. To each his own. Good technique gets you better tone control, not just having long or short nails.

  • david's style is truly commendable

  • Are you kidding? Dave is the best!!!

  • sounds great!!!

  • terrible pulento washio!!!!

  • i must admit, i do like john williams version better but this is a very close second. It's too bad the video has been removed.

  • John Williams' version does not compare to Barrios' or Pierri's recordings.

  • Mangore--was a true genius composer for the guitar! Nicely played!
