Just for people that said u don't learn about the Haitian Revolution in high school mine does teach but u kno it's not that in-depth&&i think that the Haitian revolution was the most remarkable revolution ever
When the US revolted against the British they had aid, but when Haiti did it they didn't have jack shit. They didn't have a slave economy to help them build a nation or experianced politicians to help them build a nation either. The US, and European Nations didn't even recognize them as a nation and wished nothing more for them to fail.
As far as the French revolution goes, this revolution also sparked much fear, as well as revolution among many other nations around the world.
The Haitian revolution also caused a wave of white Haitians to be displaced, relocating to many areas including Louisiana, which would have had much influence on America, the evolution of Southern culture and the surrounding areas of relocation. The truth is that Haiti is such a poor country for many different reasons, but I personally think Europe, and the US are mostly to blame. I mean at the time how in the hell would a Negro nation going to convince any slave nations to aid them in success?
This was done through indemnity fees they had to pay France in order to be recognized, by the white world, as an independent state. This is strange when considering that they whipped the French's ass yet they were obligated to pay France for their loss. Also, the US, under Thomas Jefferson, placed an embargo on Haiti which further crippled the infant nation economically. They couldn't stomach the notion of a black republic asserting themselves and being prosperous on equal terms with whites.
The Haitian Revolution reverberated throughout the Western Hemisphere scaring whites (especially plantation owners, slave traders, and overseers) and inspiring blacks and encouraging them never to allow themselves to be dispirited and broken. The United States should've thanked and rewarded Haiti for their triumph. Had it not been for the Haitian triumph the US would not have doubled their land through the Louisiana Purchase.
For anybody who thinks the French or the Haitian revolution did not have a great impact on the world, you more than likely don't know jack about history. I am far from a PHD in History, and have only began to even scratch at the history of Haiti, but the history and the legacy of the Haitian revolution should never be forgotten. The revolution of Haiti both inspired so many blacks, and minorities alike to fight for their freedoms, as well as created major fears among the whites of the Americas.
Absolutely, it's no wonder that you don't hear or learn much about the Haitian Revolution. It's because that particular tidbit of history is menacing to white academia. When you're in school you learn so much about the American, French, Bolshevik, Cuban, revolutions but nothing about Haiti. That's because black people in Haiti reasserted their manhood and took charge of their lives by gaining freedom. This loss was embarrassing for the Western nations so they decided punish them economically.
@Ayisiens Yeah, it is amazing how The Haitian Revolution is downplayed by historians. I reside in the U.S. (American citizen) and I've never heard of the Haitian Revolution when I was growing up. Sure, we studied the American Revolution, which is understandable, the French Revolution, Cuban Revolution, and the Bolshevik Revolution, but never the Haitian Revolution. If anything, I feel that this revolution was the most remarkable because they were slaves. It can't get any worse than that.
No, you didnt learn about becuase of its negligent impact on US or world history.
There are hundreds of other revolutions and wars you probably never heard of and unless you take seminar unless you take college course seminar classes youll never learn about them at an academic level. And its not for racsist or xenophobic reasons, its just becuase whether or not these events happened the world probably wouldnt be much different today
@MOETA9 Are you kidding me? Saint-Domingue was the most prosperous colony in the world. It produced more than half the world's sugar. If it weren't for slaves defeating France for their freedom Napoleon wouldn't have become disenchanted and lost faith with the prospects of the New World and sold Louisiana territory to the United States. All of this territory was bought by Thomas Jefferson to expand the boundaries of America. The Haitian Revolution did have much impact in the New World.
The impact of Hati is debatable,as for the french revolution,i know plenty who have probably never heard of that either, when the average HS curriculum only has one credit requirement for US and world history, Hati, and even the french revolution, might get lost somewhere behind greek/roman/mesoamerican civ, US civil war, WWI/II, cold war, great depression, ect. When the history budget gets axed every year, have an understanding if public education fails to inform on these events
