You honestly sound so stupid and ignorant right now. The guy was against violence and left the show because it felt right to HIM. He obviously doesn't care what others are going to think because his own happiness is more important to him than making stupid people like you happy by staying on the show. Think about if you were on a show that revolved around something that you were so strongly against. Don't be so quick to judge because you just end up sounding immature and stupid.

@gabe426x haha your a deep guy gabe, since you clearly know this guy so well your clearly right. If he was so strongly against something that revolves around something he strongly is against, why would he start the show anyways. He is famous for starting a show then leaving a few seasons into it. I like how you tried to pretend to write like you are well educated.
@claymakerrules You are an inbred son of a bitch. Okay, re-watch this. He explains why he joined the show in the first place. Until you can get an intellectual grasp over the contents of this video, shut your ignorant mouth.
He was a true asset to the show, I miss his character dearly! But I understand all his reasons for leaving and I wish him the best of happiness in all his endeavors. Hope to see you in the theatre one day Mandy!
why do ppl think the show has losts its "psychological element" or its "science?" they still have it. Thats kinda the whole point of the show. The show wouldn't exist without it
@LoveEva224 It's American way of making TV-shows; in last 3 season of NUMB3RS there was no math anymore. In all American TV-shows couple first seasons are always best. After that the production companies make all shows boring and non-interesting because they are trying to maxinum their revenues -.-'
@Kaalifornia It's just marketing strategy. American audience likes to turn off their brains and watch television for entertainment. The concept for Criminal Minds is actually quite original and showed much promise. I enjoyed the first 2 seasons because of my interest in criminal psychology, but sooner or later the producers always sacrifice intellectually engaging content for more drama and excessive violence/gore for shock value. The show today is no different than any other generic cop drama.
as much as i respect this guy and his reasons i feel this is just a cop out excuse cause they may talk about violent acts on cm and on occasions show them but we can more violence on the news and you cant have a show where they chase serial killers with out violence or it would not work
he is exactly right. i watch criminal minds because im interested in the actual science of catching these killers, like criminology and the psychology behind it, not watching them kill their victims on the street. i cant even watch most episodes around my family anymore because they have gotten so 'dark'. but i bet the ratings wouldnt be as high as they are if there wasnt a little violence in it. agent gideon is and always will be my favorite criminal minds character!
I've loved Mandy Patinkin since way back when he was in Yentl. He was great in Chicago Hope, as well. I've never seen him in Criminal Minds (tv is just crap anymore,) but have enjoyed his singing and hope to see him live on stage some day.
I totally understand what he means. The show isn't called "Serial Killers Kill People". It's called Criminal MINDS. Its turned into a cop show kind of like law and order C.I went Vincent was on it, but originally with him it started as a show about FBI PROFILERS and the people they chase and literally...the Criminal MINDS. Now it's become a show that, while still very entertaining, is more about a special team of cops who are really good at catching some nasty people. The minds are no longer ex
I discovered him as a singer ( wonderful singer) only a few months agò because I'm italian and I never saw him on Letterman before you tube. He's more than remarcable as a singer, actor and now I think he's a great human being too.
One of my favourite actors. Criminal Minds is not the same without him and I agree with him about the violence, I prefered the show in the beginning - and I also miss the comedy in television shows. We don't always need to be shocked, we see enough of that in the world we live.
Well when the show started, in the first few episodes there was very little violence. It focused on the profiling and it was very good, but since he left it has gotten much more violent and I do agree with him.
well then he did EXACTLY what was required he bowed out and chose to do something else.. but in that he should NEVER assume that because he was an actor who pretended to be somebody else he's now an authority on anything to do with any part of the acting he did as a JOB. the elevated arrogance that actors have is simply disgusting that they make themselves an "authority".
i simply dont watch shows like that.problem solved, he did those tasks of FURTHERING that which he hates, and is guilty of it
@PanicxPapayas meh..just because somebody speaks intellegently doesnt make him an authority on the subject matter..
he carried a gun on the show, but hates guns and works to ensure that he is at hand to enable and further gun control...that to me is a mark of a hypocrite.
if he was SOOOoooo beholden to gun control he would've asked to be presented as a "CONSULTANT" who didnt need to carry a gun..
in short, a limousine liberal who wants it BOTH ways.. so a hypocrite, who have validity at all.
i'm just saying their mannerisms are somewhat similar.
but yeah seriously. if he wants there to be less violence on tv, and more comedy, why audition for a show called CRIMINAL MINDS?! legit what was he thinking
He's right. There is no reason for the multiple gory scenes of Criminal Minds...it's getting to me after having watched many episodes....and it will make me stop watching.
It seems the writers have a limited range and imagination....I'd like to see more material about the lives of the team, instead of just one-liners....
Hearing him talk about working with the writers and producers really sort of shows you that all of Gideon's anti violence sentiments and thoughts are actually those of Mandy. I think that's what gives the character so much appeal and believability and makes him seem so real. In a way, he kind of is but at the same time Mandy being the epic awesome actor that he is presents it in such a way that it's still entertaining instead of boring reality. That's a talent that not many actors have.
I'm surprised they released this. Usually actors have some kind of contractural obligation not to criticize the show, for publicity reasons. I guess they must have recognized the same dichotomy that he's talking about here.
I do have to kinda agree. The violence can serve a purpose--it grounds the show in reality, creates tension and so on--but a lot of times, especially on a criminal investigation show, it can become obsessive.
i do like joe mantegna as an actor and on criminal minds i still love that show but i liked it better when mandy patinkin was on the show i wish he wouldnt have quit
I agree with what Mandy is saying, and have been thinking the same thing. I loved Criminal Minds because of the originality it had with the focus on the mind; on the why. The show, as much as i still enjoy it, has become more about the violence, rather than the serial killer in itself. Figuring out why and how people can do the things that they do, that's what is interesting and intriguing to me, not seeing people brutally murdered and disfigured. The show has lost it's originality.
i think the violence in this show is taking over. its not as good anymore. it was good when mandy said the famous quotes, and gave the show a different feel . but now they change people around and they all say the quotes and its kinda just trying to scare the audience more and more. for me its becoming unwatchable, from being a show that i really liked, especially because it were looking into the minds of people . it was just cool. now its not so cool.
@smartererer like hell it does..they are the EPITOME of non tolerant authoritarians, bound by a tradition of lies and treachery to support their secular and non centrist viewpoints..that definition you speak of was from the OLD liberals in england..not socialists, who have corrpted their namesake, who do I know this? I am a libertarian or the true liberal..not a warped bastardation of the former. you wont like to be shown the historical references and wont deal with the TRUE meaning of a word.
He left because he eventually leaves everything if it lasts any amount of time. (Chicago Hope) Any other reason is a crock, he knew what it was and took the money willingly until he got bored.
I started watching Criminal Minds about a month ago, got a lend of the first 3 seasons off a friend. I was just starting the 2nd season when somone said to me that Mandy left the show. I was shocked. Nobody seemed to know why and either did I till now. I would of loved if he stayed on the show, he plays the part brilliantly, but after seeing this video I can see his strong opinion, which is a very viable one come across, and I do agree with him, which such a view he was right to leave.
I love Mandy and I miss Gideon - the show has lost the philosophical element without him. It is somewhat comforting to know the real reason for him leaving the show, and he is right to do that. I started watching CM only coz he was in it!
I totally agree: that is why I watch the show, too. The added violence is not helping the show at all, I try to gloss over that part and wait for the interrogation scenes and the profiling scenes.
Love you, Mandy! I hope that the producers of Criminal Minds will eventually hear what you're saying.
I agree with Mandy. I started watching the first series because he was in it and feel the writing was superior and less graphic. I'll cease to watch once the second series (which is presently playing in New Zealand) finishes and he is no longer in it. Love this wonderful human being and his obvious integrity!
Yah - did he quote something that AlGore wrote?? Wow... this is news to me... But he still has an awesome voice and is the personification of the Che... Is he really that liberal??
Mandy - I'm so glad you are off that show -- the writing, the overall "vibe" was just so off for you - and it didn't showcase any of your many talents -- I know your next project will be something incredible! You are such a man of integrity!
After seeing this particular video, and also after viewing some of the performing videos here and listening to him at his web site, I am inclined to think that, for him, he has done the right thing. And I agree with him completely. Of course I will miss his presence on the show, but I will continue to watch and continue to wish him well.
