  • the horn player did a very good job!!

  • I can sing like him,

  • :O The guy at 1:43 is so cute!

  • I love this guy's intensity .. if i were Tolomeo, I'd consider myself firmly put in my place! It's a shame the orchestra is going too bloody slowly!! .. for me to notice, it's got to be pretty obvious.

  • I had the speakers turned up too loud.....then they went silent....i think this dude just destroyed my speakers.

  • I also want to know how to sing like this!

  • 우와~~한국에도 드디어!! 카운터테너가 등장하다니...!! ㅠㅠ As a Korean, I am so proud of him !! He has such a wonderful and magnificant voice.

  • I am baffled about how much I like this and how much i like counter tenor in general O.o

  • You know, I find this very silly.

  • @aidanivesdavis Why? I think hes great.

  • @TheBibleWitness Don't get me wrong, he's an incredible singer. It's just that this song is supposed to be really threatening - like Caesar is saying 'bring it on!' but it's all in this really girly non-threatening tone, you know?

It's totally beautiful just not fitting the song content in my opinion :)

  • @aidanivesdavis I would rather call it "taunting". This is not a bravura aria where Caesar displays his power. He shows his disdain and contempt for Ptolemy, more than he threatens him. See Andreas Scholl's performance in the Copenhague production for a perfect example.

  • @NancyLee53 no he was 28 at that time..

  • anyone else fancy a go at the cute horn player? :D

  • @carniolus HAHA definitely. There's something about young men (i'm one myself) professionally playing classical music that makes me weak.

  • @DiVeronica or perhaps butterflies is the proper phrase

  • @Interessant11 i can sing falsetto once my teacher put me in soprano and it was good but then she said i had to be a tenor again but that don't stop me

  • Most people don't realize it helps to be born with a special voice to be a counter tenors. Many counter tenors could never be tenors. David is said to have been a bass-baritone. This this is what a real man sounds like, no women, and tenor could not sound like this.

  • is there a man who can sing soprano with head voice? If so who can be very close? Michael maniaci I'm not sure if he can really sing soprano but please answer my comment anyway!

  • @chrisstevensjunior Try "Narcis Iustin Ianau semifinala". He sings alto, but it's the highest counter-tenor voice that I ever heard. I have to mention that he is only 16 and he hasn't studied too much yet. Listen to this until the end. he likes to amaze at the end of his songs.

  • @sasesasiinsasesaci still cant tell sounds like falsetto how can you tell though?

  • @chrisstevensjunior I really don't know if Narcis is falsetto, but it's difficult to him to sing any lower. When his voice is well warmed up and he's not nervous it doesn't sound falsetto at all, but I guess he won't be able to take notes this high after his voice will change.

  • @sasesasiinsasesaci why does it have to change man i hope mine wont change lol i would hate to have a deep voice

  • @chrisstevensjunior yes micheal can but he has a genetic fault that allows him to sing that high. countertenors that sing in the range of a soprano are called sopranists. tomotaka okamoto is also able to sing in the range of soprano. David DQ Lee is equal to a mezzo.

  • @allthenamesrtook how can i find my range so many videos but not helping :(

  • @chrisstevensjunior its hard to find your range if you don't sing opera, singing pop and similar stuff makes it much harder but the most common male voice is baritone, if you have a piano its much easier to find.

  • @allthenamesrtook how can i find out my true range so many videos not helping :(

  • how can you tell if its countertenor or falsetto

  • @chrisstevensjunior countertenor is falsetto, it's just really good falsetto that can reach the range of a mezzo-soprano or in some cases soprano.

  • I think AL PACINO is conducting!

  • the horn player's hot lol

  • this is not meant to detract from the skill or beauty in an old vocal tradition brought back to life...but we must all admit...there is some rather superb horn playing being done...it is very difficult to support an entire section solo...especially with such a regal tone

  • Comment removed

  • at about 2:27 he lost the tone for just like a millisecond. as a countertenor i hate it when that happens. and what a gorgeous production. he has a wonderful voice

  • This guy's face looks disturbingly angry.

  • why choosing something so low when his voice resonates more in the high notes? Weird

  • Why is Michael Palin conducting :-)

  • watch?v=q9PNMLS9uiw

  • i am a counter tenor in training and i am stunned lol. hope to be dralions male vocalist someday. cirque du soleil is the best

  • Whatever you may think of the style, the man's pitch & control are absolutely exceptional.

And hell, if you liked the Bee Gees ...

  • I have never yet been convinced by any counter tenor that I am listening to a soprano or mezzo soprano. It remains a man singing falsetto. But what did those true castrati sound like I wonder? The vocal chords of a boy with the lungs and chest of a grown man! I would never want that to be done to any young boy again, but if there was a time machine available I would certainly take a journey back to hear one of those magnificent voices. Farrinelli.

  • @MrAndredekock

see the movie that I put in response! perhaps you will be convinced!

  • @MrAndredekock If you want to check out a castrato, search Alessandro Moreschi, one of the last castrati who actually recorded some pieces ~ 1902. It should show up right away if you search here on youtube.

  • Very good!

  • His facial expressions amuse me. =)

  • the mic need to be at the mouth if its recored :(

  • He is cool, but I just don't like his voice

  • a bit weak for my ear

  • simply amazing!

  • wow. i love it! i just find his facial expressions dont fit his voice but its amazing that he can do that give him props mastering vibrato is dificult enough but hiting some of the higher notes is jus amazing

  • Tim Thorpe, 23 years old (video from 2007) , soloist & since 2010 leader of BBC-horns !!!

    optimamagazine.co.uk/read/features/people/352-something-in-the-air-tim-thorpe

  • He sings better than I do. And I'm a girl!

  • Comment removed

  • GREAT (without discuss) - but whi is the brillant horn soloist?

  • @modellist7 when you find out.. let me know. he is awesome and very handsome at same time. beautiful playing of the instrument..

  • GREAT (without dicsussion) - but who is the horn soloist?

  • His interpretation is 'spot on' with a great deal of finesse-with-balls. It's just simply musical in every way. And, yes, the horn player is breath-taking, in every way (so far observed, Lord, have mercy!).

  • This is beautiful

  • btw... the horn player, besides being terrific, is so cute!

  • Me encanta este hombre

  • I really like the expressions on his face which, for me, add to his wonderful performance - a direct contrast to Andreas Scholl's 2005 performance in Denmark which is a favourite of mine. Both ways are equally valid - music is after all expressing emotions. No wonder he won!!

  • @angelhalo2 I agree. You might wish to listen to Nicholas Spanos's version of this aria for comparison as well. It's wonderful too.

  • Why all the hate in te singing?

  • @wjhanegraaf Its from the opera Julius Caesar, who is singing about how he is going to wallop people who fight against him....... so he is doing a spot of acting in the rendition

  • @viechbaderin and some others: I am desperate that people hearing counter-tenors still thing about sexual problems. Not at all! That voice it is only a matter of technique (and work). This man is not eunuch like some said, he is a falsettist singing with its head voice. Please respect its work and talent, and don't laugh about something that you do not understand.

  • @pirlouwi IS THAT REALLY HIS HEAD VOICE??? That makes this 10x as impressive

  • Wonderful countertenor and beutifull aria.

  • @HerrWarja

Ich sehe das genauso. Ich kenne viele Aufnahmen hiervon, aber diese ist sehr gut!

  • @schaefersalem English or swedish please.

  • @HerrWarja

I see the same. I know many recordings of this, but this is very good!

  • @schaefersalem I agree :-)

  • Brilliant performance! He makes it seem effortless, masculine (hard, considering the vocal range) and technically just flawless. The orchestra sounds especially good as well...really nice tone all the way around. This is a contest? I've never heard of it.

  • His trill is amazing!...most coloratura sopranos would poison him for it

  • Freakishly, I sing like this all of the time. As an inspiring counter-tenor, I find myself wondering how I can sing that high. But truly, it doesn't mean I'm biologically a freak; trust me, I perfectly normal. I just can sing high.

  • Amazing!

  • I sang like this for a week after I slipped and hit my nuts on the cross bar of my bicycle.

  • I think that his expression and the way he portrays Giulio Cesar and his voice is what makes him unique in his own way.

I'm a counter tenor and I admire Andreas Scholl, and David DQ Lee the most :D

I really wish I could perfect my mixed voice...

  • No, it's not beautiful at all! His coloratura is not too bad, but nothing special. His grimaces... Perhaps only Bartoli's grimaces are worse:-) His voice sounds somewhat mechanical to me... The most beautiful version I've ever heard and the best coloratura is Nicholas Spanos's! That's exquisite!

  • A powerful voice with great dramatic possibilities (not fully realized in this situation, as someone said) - and Canadian to boot! Great discovery for me, thanks!

  • A little schematic interpretation

  • Intersting voice... Next best thing to modern day castrato. I send my kind and warm regards,

  • I think that overall it's a bit manic - a bit like a small yappy dog who is making a big show - and doesn't convey Caesar's confidence (over-confidence?). Still, we have to remember that this is in a very high profile competition rather than in a production with a prolonged rehearsal period to iron out manic moments into characterisation.

  • beautiful, not his face the singing

  • In My Opinion: His singing is fine technically but it feels a bit dead or static. I understand that expression is more difficult with falsetto but still seems rather dull to me compared to others I have heard.

  • Thanks to the Allmighty for so much beauty. It makes us better.

  • explain the negro.

  • I'm a Counter tenor myself and I would love to have that control over my voice, in any sport would be bad to be a bating machine or a goal machine ?? He's amazing !!

  • Bravo-Bravissimo. I concur with canihaveanid, "just wonderful! great voice, great display of emotion, great music!"

  • Shot, David! Great voice.

  • this is just wonderful! great voice, great display of emotion, great music!

  • Amazing how so many people miss the point. DQ Lee really captures the essence of what he is singing. Stop sipping on hateraide. If you can do better step up to the plate and belt it out. Until then sit back and learn something from the professionals.

  • very textbook rendition, there no ring in his voice, it is boring. rest well david daniels and andreas scholl this man is a poser. his voice lacks exciting energy. maybe with time and a good coach. maybe, but for now it is the emperor' new clothes, there is nothing there.

  • I totally agree with you.... it sounds like a singing machine.

  • Now this would be a song that Farinelli would've sung?

  • this is beautiful

  • This is very entertaining ^^

  • Comment removed

  • He is good, but his breathe support is sloppy and some coloratura is uneven...Cardiff? Idk?

  • do you seriously know anything about the Cardiff competitions? Or anything about opera?

Vitas is an overrated crossover artist, he does not sing opera.

How much do you know about the countertenor and castrato repertoire to be able to say that?

  • Comment removed

  • wow, that's a lot of talent... though I must say that 2:18 is hilarious to watch

  • Hahahah his face is hilarious

  • He is singing in character: he is Julius Caesar, after all....a man so confident in himself and derisive of Ptolemy's underhand plotting. Added to this, if you are singing a virtuosa aria as this is, in the countertenor voice, that pushing forward of the nose and lips are all part of producing the sound....and what beautiful, mellifluous sound he produces, even in the highest notes! Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

  • Absolutely exellent!!

  • Guess the guy playing french horn has a lot more difficult piece of work than the singer... BTW the conductor is Jacek Kaspszyk

  • he needs more balls to sing like that than you will ever in need in your career as a youtube commenter. loser.

  • lol

  • @eustazio true expression but in reality if he didn't the balls he would have done it better you see during the baroque period they used to lose them during an operation done on purpose before puberty so that their voice remains undeveloped and they end up with a woman like voice for the rest of their life. Today this is illegal and I hope no one tires it besides as you have seen Practice makes perfect!

  • @SHAWNGALEADROCK by the way, they did not cutt the balls, they cut the link between the balls and the body... the balls stayed there.

  • @eustazio lol a teacher told me so but i take your word

  • @SHAWNGALEADROCK You don't understand at all whocastrati were. They didn't "end up with a woman like voice for the rest of their life"! They were castrated only because they had a special quality in the voice: neither a boy, or a woman. It was very sensual, beautiful singing with a different COLOUR. There's special magic which can be found only in high male voices. Women at the time of castrati were only a cheaper SUBSTITUTION for them, but could never replace their quality!

  • @serenaluce They did it so their vocal ranges were not dropped after Puberity.

Source: Music Theory + History classes in college.

  • lool...dont be rude!!!!!!that is talent man!!!!

    anyway its fun...=D

  • I was actually at Cardiff Singer of the World the night David DQ Lee sang. He was phenomenal.

  • love the facials, if u want good facials in the vocal field of music david dq lee's the one to watch

  • god that horn part is SO DAMN HIGH... Very impressive bit of playing from that guy. And please give him my number..

  • y is the Fr horn guy always being videotaped? Though he's hndsm

  • There is a horn solo in the score.

  • He is very handsome but he is not being filmed for that reason... lol... He is being filmed because this is a an Aria with a French Horn Obbligato... Basically the French horn and singer are going back and forth... The French horn is integral in this piece...

  • how do you widen your vocal range and identify your own? I have a voice higher than corey taylor(baritone) but deeper than michael jackson. i think that im a tenor but i'd like to know for sure

  • The best advice should be to have an experienced voice teacher to help you work your range. When your vocal technique is solid you could sing in at least three registers and reach high notes as well as really low notes. I'm a tenor who can sing alto notes and baritone notes of quality in chest voice. My spoken voice is lighter because I chose to speak higher not to fatigue my speaking voice.

  • If Michael Jackson crosses over into classical, he'd be a countertenor.

  • when i sing it sounds just like that but people laugh an shit.

  • 'Seriously though... go listen to Maria Callas instead of this guy. '

who's to say you can't listen to both? why do people have to be so narrow-minded? good lord.

  • What a lot of BULL.... he has a beautiful voice and what if he sounds or not like a countertenor or mezzoish to you. So, who cares?... he´s very musical and is singing beautifully here. That´s what matters.

  • this is a countertenor...... watch?v=F9ijwfRTv0o&feature=related

David Lee is not a countertenor, he's much to low

  • 'Seriously though... go listen to Maria Callas instead of this guy. '

    - Yes, listen to Callas's great singing of Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, etc etc.... Also, hear her God-awful renditions of Mozart arias ('Porgi Amor' and 'Marten Aller Arten') and other stuff she wasn't suited to.

  • The clip you've posted is not a countertenor; its a treble or boy soprano, whose voice hasn't broken yet.

  • Why the hell listen to this when you can listen to Maria Callas? I can do better than this guy, and I'm a guy. He's not even singing in the violin range, so I don't even consider him a countertenor. He's between alto and soprano. Seriously though... go listen to Maria Callas instead of this guy.

  • Wouldn't that make him a Mezzo-Soprano? I agree with you here, This isn't the best version of Va tacito. My preference is Andreas Scholl or Janet Baker... Anyway, I'm not willing to go tribal over who's the best singer; I find this music wonderful however it's interpreted.

  • Yes, he's a Mezzo-Soprano

  • 'He's not even singing in the violin range, so I don't even consider him a countertenor.'

    - ...then you don't know enough about countertenors to make the classification. They often sing in a tessitura similar to that of a mezzo-soprano, as well as the alto range. 'Violin range'?! He's singing the notes Handel wrote! If you wanted to make an ill-advised comparison between voices and instruments, you would be more sensible to match the violin with a soprano voice, not a countertenor.

  • The range he is singing in is consistant with a mezzo-soprano. For him to sing that high requires the use of the falsetto register, rejected in most of the 19th and about the first half of the 20th century as too feminine, later accepted. Such a voice was also rejected in the 16th century as too weak. When this piece was written, women were not allowed to sing in church, the falsetto register was regarded as too weak, which pretty much leaves castrati.

  • i could be wrong... but i don't think maria callas sang an awful lot of handel !

  • 'Why the hell listen to this when you can listen to Maria Callas?'

    - See cuicuimusic (above)

'I can do better than this guy, and I'm a guy.'

    - No, mate; you can't. Enter Cardiff Singer of the World 2011 and see what happens. Oh, and, just for the record, I don't think this performance is that great - he gets a little out of time with the orchestra at certain points - but he has a great voice.

  • This guy is not a counter tenor. He is probably a baritone that had a very pretty high range early in his development, leading a teacher to tell him to exorsize, leading him to call himself a countertenor. Probably a bartone.

  • you basically just defined a countertenor...

  • I am a baritone.. And a countenor... So what's your point?!

  • this isnt falsetto!!:S this guy is a sopranist...

  • he IS a good countertenor

come on if he isnt a countertenor, what is he? countersoprano? nonsense

  • No sé si es un contratenor, falsetista, sopranista pero su voz es hermosa. Esto es lo importante, no las clasificaciones. Saludos.

  • He's not a countertenor :\

  • It sounds like he's having a hard time to sing in falsetto...

  • Some of comments on this video that make me think that the posters need listen to other countertenors and research the definition of falsetto. Granted, this person is a poor example of a countertenor (some would argue that he is better called a falssetist or male alto.)

Most respectable counter tenors use a developed head voice with some falsetto maybe at the top or their range. One such term for this is a model voice which is actually produced by the vocal chords vibrate, unlike falsetto.

  • ok, now maybe you can give names ? i know maybe one guy who fits you definition nowadays, so i'm not sure how relevant it is...

  • He's definitely one whose appearance does not match his voice. But he's pretty darn good. I can't do that.

  • I don't know if I should point out that there are thousands of viable countertenors worldwide, myself included, to FonkayMonkay. A countertenor is a commodity, much like contrabasses.

  • bandes d'ignares c'est pas une question d'hormones!!!

  • So this probably isn't the orchestra's best rep...

  • fallsetto xD

  • Is it?

  • Yes

  • I didn't like his facial expressions..and his voice sounded weak.

  • Many countertenors speak in a deep, "manly" tone, but their natural singing range is in the alto and sometimes soprano range. Of course, some men who are naturally tenor or maybe baritone may train to sing at this higher range. However, it is typically their natural singing voice.

  • Man, it does stay weird :D

  • No...this is not a natural singing voice. It's a falsetto that's been trained.

  • countertenors singing range is usualy set in before its possible to train

  • Superbe, Monsieur.

    Merci!

  • What motivates a talented man to sing countertenor? Is it bec. it has a small niche of singing stars that the music world has and therefore, more performances for them? I have a falsetto but would like to develop a manly tenor voice. Or is it bec. his vocal quality is truest at this type of singing?

  • He has a girly voice...?

  • Thats what counter tenors do. The sit in between the female singers and the male singers. They end up as men with stupidly high voices.

  • Lol, that's weird.

  • ur mom is weird

  • ohhhhhhhhh, you are SO manly hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
