i am from a younger generation but... that song has an eerie but relevant message to every generation, I wish I could have known her. I play music and sing, this song is in my songbook.
Beautiful, talented, funny, and one of a kind, Peggy Lee. -By the way, when asked about the message of this song, she always responded that she did believe in a healing, loving, afterlife and despite life's challenges- that it is well worth living. A true legend.
Great Miss Peggy Lee is Classic. Wish the song 'Make Believe' by Jerome Kern, from this same concert gets uploaded :), I had this concert taped, but alas VHF tapes don't last. The whole concert was splendid.
This song does not have to be suicidal!People hype up so many things. the writers thoughts also could mean to not take life so seriously, Have a ball when your down, they didn't have antidepressents then. What were their options??? Love this song, and the way Peggy Lee sings it. Thank you for the post. I remember watching this when I was A kid.
What year?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Nope..it glaringly shows that life with out reference to our Creator is meaningless and hedonistic nihilism.
Far better to join our hearts with the Lord Jesus and say with Paul "For me to live is Christ.. to die is gain"

What a consummate performer: she delivers the words with perfect respect for the potential in each syllable, in spite of the ravages of illness.

@coolkel1211
It's not anti-suicidal. The message is that life is meaningless, so smoke 'em like you've got 'em.
