There isn't a difference, I should know. Except that Nightwish is more heavier than the others since they have a lot of power metal elements (aka symphonic power metal). They just think they are tr00 metalheads if they have a song to bash. This is a typical gothic metal song, which I'll admit is on the borderline with rock, but that doesn't matter.

@tattooedsaviour - For me, it's the way I feel when I listen to European music. There's a certain feeling that I imagine most bands run with and try to capture it with their music. Most of the time, they're successful at it. Most American bands are more about situational songs than songs that inspire feeling in the soul.

In regard to American versus European music - just my opinion, but it's probably like accents - we all have them, but we don't realize it because it's all we're around. People from other places notice our accents, but we don't. So, is it possible that, in the same way, our American music doesn't lack something, but we think that it does because we're used to it? Perhaps Europeans think that their music is lacking something that ours has? Any Europeans have a comment?

Agreed there mate. However I'm from New Zealand which is nowhere near america or europe lol, but I can see both sides without being biased. Down here, pop and r-n-b scene is very influenced by americanism. But our rock/punk/metal scene - we've managed to make totally our own. If you really had to compare our rock/metal voices though, we'd be close to european, mainly english.

Some notable bands include 8 Foot Sativa, Sinate, Shihad, Blindspott.

We in the US compare Euro metal 2 ours ( people like myself) find it refreshing & unusually good. Some (in any country) r closed minded & only listen 2 music from their country due 2 out dateded beliefs in superiority based on patriatism. We all relate 2 this music we love no matter which country we come from. This music has no loyalty 2 any 1 country, only 2 its fans.

If a group is of the mainstream style then they get played on the radio, but that doesn't necessarily make them good. Bands who sing in their native tongue which is not English rarely get noticed outside of their own country. Take Ossian, for example. They sing in Hungarian, and are HUGE in Hungary. Unless you're a Hungarian metal fan living in another country, you'd probably never hear of them. Which is sad, because you miss out on some good music.
