@chilich33z of course someone like you is going to come to this video and say something like that i dont see why you cant let people think what they want to and get over it instead of criticizing it
I took my son there last year and we snorkeled the statue. Absolutely breathtaking! The video doesn't do it justice, but this is the best video I have seen! Thank you for posting!
i just came back from visiting these coral reefs today, i didnt get to see the statue =( but all the other reefs are truly amazing. we saw barracudas, mantarays, groupers and all sorts of living creatures all though i advise not to go camping at pennekamp since it is infested with tiny little mosquitos. but i truly advise for you to visit these coral reefs. this was my first time snorkeling and i want to go back for more. amazing reefs.
I think this is just so amazingly wonderful! But think about it, if no one touched it, you wouldn't even be able to see the statue in awhile it would be covered over with coral! =D I hope when I'm older, I'll be able to go there... One day...
I watched some hookah divers come down to it when I was there last week, and hug the statue, then realize what she was touching. she'll be hurting...lol
I'm an eco-conservative diver but I think the park should keep the coral from growing on it. There are plenty of miles for the coral to grow. At this rate it'll be no time before the entire statue is engulfed by coral and totally unrecongizable.
RIDIDULOUS that they wouldnt do that
it's got to be some eco-nazi that made the decision not to keep it coral free
actually that was the whole reason they picked the spot they did to put the statue. There is a decent amount of surge there when the seas become rough, so the coral doesn't grow on teh statue, mostly. there is some coral on the statue, but it's growth is pretty minimal.
Some things are on a diver's hit/wish list - Blue Hole in Belize, Great Barrier Reef in Oz, muck diving in Southeast Asia, cave diving, Christ of the Abyss, etc. etc. Once you've done all these, you can feel complete.
For sicvitaest your comment is way off base... the hurricanes of the last few years... Wilma to name one has deposited tons of sand, silt and sediment on the reefs effectively covering them.. sad to be true... I love the reefs off the Florida Keys and have watched their decline with great sadness... Wilma was the great destroyer
I grew up in key largo ...last dove the statue about 20 years ago..looks like total sht the reef looks dead...maybe to many divers standing on the pedistal...touching the reef etc etc.. do that times what about 100 thousand dives a years...no wonder its all dead.. idiots..
yeah I went last week actually...the reef around the statue where all the dives were was pretty dead, but about 100 yards away the reef looked much better
I think its just because of the large volume of divers like you said
how did it get down there? was it built?

It's covered with fire coral. No one touches it, unless they want to suffer for a week. All boat captains warn their passengers.
