@madpetrolhead Only this busy during the milk season (Spring/Summer). The SOL (Stratford to Okahukura Line) is currently mothballed and folk say that it's still in reasonable condition. SEE: Stratford–Okahukura Line in Wikipedia. And yes, what a great drive that road is - especially the unsealed Tangarakau Gorge section. Sealing that section would destroy its character. For others: DON'T be put off by that unsealing. It is hard baked clay when dry and has virtually no loose gravel.
This is brilliant viewing of railway working. Routine yet spectacular.

Excellent video, this line must a busy one, great viewing spots too.
Do you know if the line between Stratford and Tamaraunui has been repaired after that big derailment.
My wife and I travelled along the Worlds Forgotten Highway in March this year and were disapointed to hear the line was closed.
Maybe next time we will see some trains, have done an excursion train through there and it was awesome.
